to say Niles was pathetic and Daphne was wrong to marry him

For some reason Niles seems to be held in great affection - but why?

He was so weak-willed with Maris - for someone who claims to be an expert in human behaviour, it took him years and years to face up to the obvious.

The way he went around smelling Daphne's hair secretly - how creepy would that be?? And what kind of man dumps his fiancee on their wedding day? Not to mention, he simply can't handle pressure - rumour has it, he even choked during his spelling bee.

Daphne should have stayed with Donny.

"Nobody calls me Peach Fuzz!"

I LOVE Frasier!

I still bloody love the show but watching it now I have to say that like with all other shows of the time the sexism is super noticeable watching with a 2022 lens!

For example the running joke about Roz being unusually promiscuous, despite the fact Frasier is shagging a different woman probably every other episode for the duration of the series... it was of its time though and I do still really enjoy watching it.

Just interesting how noticeable some stuff is now when watching 90s sitcoms.

I was about to say the same thing. The constant digs about Roz seem unnecessary and some of Niles’s comments to her especially cruel.

Also some of the women Fraser dates, seem totally out of his league, a complete mismatch. The whole mediocre man with stunning women trope was also a 90s thing.

Classicblunder · 26/06/2022 07:50

Interesting as I feel the opposite: Niles is intelligent, kind, rich, can cook, worships the ground she walks on. What does Daphne bring to the table?

One of those sitcom couples where you cannot imagine what they would talk about over dinner.

Maireas · 26/06/2022 07:58

These are the things that make life's tapestry so rich.
And psychiatrists even richer.

LaMarschallin · 26/06/2022 08:03

I love "Frasier" almost as much as Frasier himself does.
Whenever the cat is staring out of the window, giving her brain a whirl by watching a leaf or something, I say: "DC, fetch me a samba tape... Xavier Cugat. Now she's thinking, "the later Hollywood stuff, or the early New York recordings?"

(This may have worn a little old for DH.
He's probably thinking: "Which one's the emergency button?")

CounsellorTroi · 26/06/2022 08:05

I loved the episode where Daphne starts dating a carbon copy of Niles, and an enraged with jealousy Niles calls him a fop.

Maireas · 26/06/2022 08:06

Ludicrous popinjay!

SnowWhitesSM · 26/06/2022 08:10

Niles is not kind @Classicblunder he's pompous and neurotic. I love him, however he's not kind.

Fair but he is really kind to Daphne - total pushover really.

For me Daphne is the weak link in the core cast - both as an actor and as a character

Merryclaire · 26/06/2022 08:16

I love Frasier! And I loved it when Niles and Daphne got together!

In the early episodes Niles is definitely quite creepy and pervy towards Daphne but he grows as a character over time.

He also had low self esteem as was so brow beaten by his ex wife.

The way he idolises Daphne becomes a problem early in their relationship if you remember as she ends up overeating and pushing him away. She feels like he doesn’t see her as a real person - only a fantasy. Even though he disagrees.

Early perving aside, I think it’s lovely how much he adores her.

grafittiartist · 26/06/2022 08:18

I found Niles more entertaining when he wasn't with Daphne. Brilliant character.
Love them all though.

Maireas · 26/06/2022 08:21

I love the Three Valentines episode.
Niles doesn't speak, just has an increasingly catastrophic time.

SpamhappyTootsie · 26/06/2022 08:24

Unrequited love is always going to have more comedy value, but I think Niles and Daphne eventually brought the best out in each other.

The digs at Roz never had much power, because they came from repressed child-men and she was the one who got to do what she wanted and put up with no shit.

He was incredible in that episode. Buster Keaton class physical comedy.

Maireas · 26/06/2022 08:31

Also...."hot and foamy"

SnowWhitesSM · 26/06/2022 08:33

Yes he was very kind to Daphne @CounsellorTroi and she did bring out the best in him once they were together.

I like all their story arcs. I love the episode where they went out for dinner and ended up in Martins favourite steak house where you choose your own steak! My other favourite is the fight, Frasier sticks up for himself but Martin saves him with the cop coming to break it up.

SnowWhitesSM · 26/06/2022 08:35

Laughing to myself now about the waitress cutting off their ties 😂

Maireas · 26/06/2022 08:35

All the fixin's!

watcherintherye · 26/06/2022 08:57

One of my favourite episodes was opening night at ‘Les Frères Heureux’! Roz, after the explosion of
flambéed cherries GrinGrin

queenofarles · 26/06/2022 09:22

I love Frasier, David Hyde Pierce is incredibly talented , his silent scene , the one where he sets fire to Frasier’ apartment is one of the funniest.

i found Daphne so annoying and I think the writers never intended for them to be together
but were perhaps forced into giving in.
its a very sophisticated show , and I don’t see them doing the predicted .

I personally loved it when he hooked up with Lilith , I thought they were better suited.

they had great chemistry in Julia too!

Ponoka7 · 26/06/2022 10:14

I was hoping that they continued with Roz and Bulldog making it work. Roz didn't take him seriously.

Maireas · 26/06/2022 10:16

Bulldog was such a great character.
Actually quite nuanced, he loved Roz.

CounsellorTroi · 26/06/2022 10:18

I liked Noel. Patrick Kerr who played him was so funny. And I liked Frasier’s relationship with Kate Costas.

Yes Dan Butler was fantastic. And rather hot. Bit of a waste him being gay!
