to say Niles was pathetic and Daphne was wrong to marry him

For some reason Niles seems to be held in great affection - but why?

He was so weak-willed with Maris - for someone who claims to be an expert in human behaviour, it took him years and years to face up to the obvious.

The way he went around smelling Daphne's hair secretly - how creepy would that be?? And what kind of man dumps his fiancee on their wedding day? Not to mention, he simply can't handle pressure - rumour has it, he even choked during his spelling bee.

Daphne should have stayed with Donny.

Best Niles line = "I've begged you to switch to a a more abrasive loofah!"

@GilChesterton Anything else in the box, Pandora?

I love Niles, I love Martin, I love Roz, I love Eddie, I love Lana PUT YOUR BROTHER ON, I love Bulldog, I love everyone who was ever in this show and will continue to watch the endless repeats on Channel 4 forever and ever until the end of days.

@GilChesterton In honour of that episode, I have just made a simple bow of thanks to the Muse, Calliope.

I can't figure out how to type Niles doing Peppo the dwarf, so am just going to assume @LargeDeviation knows what I'm on about! ;)

I'm afraid I have to stick up for my usernamesake here:

I thought one just draw a pentacle on the floor and chanted "I summon thee" three times. 😂😂😂😂

Favourite character for me was Kirby.

So funny. I actually cried. 😂 Pop, pop, pop.

@GilChesterton Yes, but you weren't in as many episodes, and very few as a central character.

Ham Radio was great but Bulldog was the 'star' of some truly brilliant episodes - the one where he pretends he saved Cafe Nervosa from the gunman, the one where he pranks Frasier by making him sing 'Three Little Maids' from the Mikado, or the one where he tries to seduce Roz after she injures her ankle...

But did a lot with a little, you must admit!

Nothing to add but just to say this is the best thread I've read on MN! Love Frasier 😁

THIS STINKS! THIS IS TOTAL BS!

MissMarpleRocks · 26/06/2022 04:12

Favourite episode is when Niles has Daphne prepare dinner for his pretend date with Dphyliss. Pure brilliance.

wellhelloitsme · 26/06/2022 04:45

I still bloody love the show but watching it now I have to say that like with all other shows of the time the sexism is super noticeable watching with a 2022 lens!

For example the running joke about Roz being unusually promiscuous, despite the fact Frasier is shagging a different woman probably every other episode for the duration of the series... it was of its time though and I do still really enjoy watching it.

Just interesting how noticeable some stuff is now when watching 90s sitcoms.

I loved Roz (Ros?) I think she would have got together with Marty if he were 20 years younger.

Definitely, I love their relationship.

I love those two characters in general, probably my favourites.

Along with Eddie obviously Smile

Nothing in the series was more annoying than Daphne's accent. Her accent sounded so false I was shocked to learn that the actress is actually a proper British! But yes, the Daphnia & Niles thing was odd.

No way!?!? I feel like my life has been a lie. Off to google her…

Spabreak · 26/06/2022 05:49

Her accent wasn't great but the title for worst accent in the show has to go to Anthony LaPaglia playing Simon Moon. As well as being a completely different accent to Daphne it was the most execrable mockney I've ever heard, making Dick Van Dyke's one sound like he was born v close to the Bow Bells in comparison. Apparently he's Australian, which might explain it.

Daphne could never have ended it up with Donnie. He was way too old and completely creeped me out. Apparently he's an award winning actor but maybe just miscast in that role. Niles was flawed but in a lovable way and I could see her falling for him.

So much of the early show depended on the tension between them before they got together, so it was never going to be quite the same afterwards. But the humour still stands the test of time, particularly in the early episodes, apart from the ones with Daphne's family in.

Maireas · 26/06/2022 05:52

Love Kirby. So, to learn one thing, you have to learn three other things?
Old dudes. You all know each other.

Maireas · 26/06/2022 05:54

I liked it when Martin dated Sherry and the brothers struggled to get on her.
Sherry - I always say, laughter is the best medicine!
Niles - I must be in the placebo group.

Daphne dumped Donnie in their wedding day.

It's my favourite programme and I love quoting it with my sister who loves it too. We have said that if we could draw we'd love to do a composite of Maris. Her webbed feet, lack of Saliva Glands, her Ginger Wiglettes. 😄
