Johnson to reportedly bring back imperial measures to mark platinum jubilee

I think it's brilliant. I'm so sick of ordering 568ml of beer when I'm in the juicer. I can't wait for it to be legal to order a pint again.

Mumwantingtogetitright · 28/05/2022 20:55

Fucking ridiculous

We're in the middle of an unprecedented cost of living crisis. At the back end of a global pandemic that has hammered our NHS and destroyed businesses across the country. Northern Ireland is in crisis as a result of Brexit. And confidence in our elected politicians is at an all-time low because our sitting prime minister has been found to have broken the laws that he himself introduced.

And the PM thinks that imperial measurements will help? WTF?

Eve · 28/05/2022 20:57

He’s a fuckwit!

MintyMoocow · 28/05/2022 20:58

Metric makes SO much more sense!

Thatswhyimacat · 28/05/2022 20:59

Classic Britain nowadays, wanting to look backwards and be out of step with the rest of the progressing world.

But it will help. His fanbase will love it. They've always struggled with decimal.

I can't wait to go back to shillings and shit. Why have 100 pennies when you can have 240? You get more pennies!

ssd · 28/05/2022 21:00

I thought his next plan was an amendment so that a lack of honesty and integrity wasn't a problem for prime ministers and meant you weren't obliged to resign when it was found you had neither?

Eve · 28/05/2022 21:00

Wait til they see the cost of a gallon of petrol!

YarnHoarder · 28/05/2022 21:01

I assumed this was a joke when I saw it but I guess not. The UK became metric in 1965 and while the majority of people can manage some conversation (heights, distances, etc) I wouldn't know where to start with other things, even my mum born before we became metric would likely struggle to go back. As a system it's also just way more logical and used by the vast majority of the world.

We shouldn't be looking to the past to fix problems they didn't have then or the tools we have available now. The 50's weren't all that great for so many sections of the population and if that's the era he's looking to emulate then I think we're all in more trouble than changing back to the imperial system.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 28/05/2022 21:02

Most people are perfectly happy with our current hybrid system of messed up units like double decker buses, pints and kilograms. Changing is pointless, as everyone will still use what they are comfortable with.

orwellwasright · 28/05/2022 21:02

Bring back miles! And stones! And height in feet and inches!

No one uses these measures any more. It's fucking outrageous!

At what point were you ever prevented from ordering a pint?

God yeah. It will probably be listed in gills so as not to frighten everyone.

Whoooosh.

Fairisleflora · 28/05/2022 21:04

It’s the temperature in Fahrenheit that I don’t understand. It makes no sense. At all. To anyone under the age of 60

YarnHoarder · 28/05/2022 21:07

Apparently it's not even anything new, it's been on the back burner since at least 2019 as an "ancient liberty" (not sure how he could say that with a straight face tbh), clearly very much Brexit related.

Guardian link I originally scrolled past here: www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/may/28/boris-johnson-set-to-bring-back-imperial-measurements-to-mark-platinum-jubilee

newnamethanks · 28/05/2022 21:07

When you say Imperial, is that because he's going to boot out the Queen and make himself Emperor? What would be useful right now is a small child who can look at the new Emperor in all his Imperial regalia and say 'look at that man. He's not a real Emperor and he's not wearing any clothes.' Take note voters. A charlatan is a charlatan no matter what he's wearing.

latebreakfast · 28/05/2022 21:08

It's a gift for savvy greengrocers.

Before: "Apples 95p a KG"
After: "BREXIT DEAL!! APPLES NOW ONLY 80p a Lb!!"

HarrietSchulenberg · 28/05/2022 21:08

I am 51. I have always used matric, apart from in baking where a cake mix is essier as 4, 4, 4, 2 (and I can make it by sight) and distance, which is still miles.

How old do you have to be to applaud a return to a system that the majority of the country have never used?

Phrenologistsfinger · 28/05/2022 21:15

As a 40 year old, I’ve never used Imperial day to day and I’ll be damned if I am
starting now! I do all
weight in kg and mg, height in cm, etc etc. He can do one with all this regressive rule Britannia heyday nonsense.

orwellwasright · 28/05/2022 21:17

Whether he counts them in imperial or metric he's still not going to know how many kids he's got.

senua · 28/05/2022 21:20

I haven't read the articles. Are the two systems to be used in tandem? Didn't the EU ban imperial so we ended up with crazy things like 454g of jam and 2.272 litres of milk. You will probably surprise yourself with your ability to recognise a pound or 4 pints.
Still getting over DD asking me how long a foot was ... I showed her a 30cm ruler. D'oh.

Ahem. 67 and managing the temperature in Cs very well. (Australia) and lived most of my life in the UK.

If you're stuck, just google, e.g. C to F and you get a conversion on the spot.

OversBo · 28/05/2022 21:25

What a bunch of backward thinking wank. I’m in my 50s and have only used metric. Science around the world is standardised to metric. Whatever next?
