Farcical. There's only a small minority of the population old enough to even remember measuring solely in imperial and most of them probably couldn't care less about it. My parents are in their 70s and have no desire to start ordering things in imperial measurements again.

Dilbertian · 28/05/2022 22:14

Would make more sense to change to Galleons, Sickles and Knuts than to Pounds, Shillings and Pence.

Our hybrid systems makes sense: metric fits with science and (most of) the rest of the world, with imperial tidbits for culture and history.

Though ounces are perfect for baking and inches are perfect for sewing.

Kendodd · 28/05/2022 22:16

Well I guess that'll stop people talking about party gate.

Thwomp · 28/05/2022 22:17

People can, have and do use both systems.

This is just a weakening of consumer protection laws, during a cost of living crisis, for no practical reason whatsoever.

No matter what the custard coloured halfwit proposes there will still be nutty fucks championing it.

But nice to see a few of you join us on this thread. Be boring if we were all sane wouldn't it.

How are consumer protection laws weakened?

Plantlifeandsoul · 28/05/2022 22:22

He thinks that this will make us forget. He thought the windfall tax on oil companies would do the trick, but it hasn’t. Loads of people I know have written to their MP for the first time about it the outcome of the Sue Gray report.

TheHateIsNotGood · 28/05/2022 22:22

Frankly, still waiting for the US Gallon (quite important if you're fuelling aircraft) and the Imperial Gallon to equate.

So what size gallon does the EU use when measuring Aviation Fuel? Or does everyone convert to Litres in whatever gallon size the fuelling country is using?
And the Aviation Industry is the Top Notch of Worldwide Agreements.

Maybe we need some sort of Esperanto Measurement.

Meanwhile, measuring in pounds does aid frugality - a pound of mince is less than half a kilo - 2.2lbs to 1k

Currently, you can display pricing information in imperial units so long as you also display it in metric units (which are the standard measurement). This enables consumers to easily understand and compare the prices between products and prevents business from abusing the differences between the two systems to give the impression that a price is better than it actually is.

The only thing this policy would do away with a universal system of measurement in shops, making relevant information harder to navigate for shoppers.

Au contraire. I am very much looking forward to using the groat (last minted 1856), the leopard and the double leopard (both minted by Edward I). Modern coins really lack pizzazz.

Dashdotdotdash · 28/05/2022 22:32

I lived through having to learn to add and subtract money in pounds, shillings and pence, and all the nonsense of having to work with the 14 and 16 times table for pounds and ounces. I definitely don't want any of it back.

I also remember how changing monetary systems contributed to inflation, as figures were also rounded up and not down. Why go through that again? It would cost an absolute fortune.

But it won't happen anyway. Johnson is just trying to distract everyone from his parties and the whole idea will quietly die the death. If anyone remembers it, he'll blame it all on the lefties.

whynotwhatknot · 28/05/2022 22:33

Out of everything hes done this is the least of my worries

i still use pounds and stone anyway

Bring back miles! And stones! And height in feet and inches!

No one uses these measures any more. It's fucking outrageous!

I do ☺️

In fact all the roads in the UK have speed signs in mph, so I’ll use miles 😉 I walk a lot and just can’t get my head around 5K 10K, I’m always thinking, how many miles is that?

I have always used feet and inches for height too, in fact I never really hear anyone say they are xxx cm, you look at threads on here mentioning height, everyone uses feet and inches.

I only use stone and/or pounds for weight too.

MelonsMelonsMelons · 28/05/2022 22:39

Barrel scraping at its weakest.

Have we ever really given up imperial? Every road sign is in miles, if some asks how much you weigh and your height most people give stones/pounds and feet/inches.

What next, the epic return of pounds, shillings and pence?

Libertaire · 28/05/2022 22:42

It’s smart politics. As always, Johnson is pandering to his key voter base : Xenophobic, uneducated OAPs.

Kona84 · 28/05/2022 22:43

I came to comment on this saying how ridiculous but now realise I mainly use imperial
I measure height in ft and inches
i measure weight in stones and lbs
i measure distance in miles
but I do say pint

Same here …and babies weights are always announced in lbs and ozs !! I don’t use Fahrenheit though ..only Celsius

Consumer protection laws aren't in fact changing then and aren't so aren't weakened. You just don't think people will be able to basic maths. If customers don't like how someone is selling their tomatoes, then go somewhere else. If they can't go somewhere else, then they'll always have to buy using their chosen measurement system so it won't make any difference.

BlessedByTheShitFairy · 28/05/2022 22:51

I'd suggest him changing the ministerial code is far more worrying.
Why isn't anyone concerned about this?

MangyInseam · 28/05/2022 22:53

Thwomp · 28/05/2022 22:10

This is already the case. Shops can sell things measured in imperial units now, but are also required to display the price per kg, so that consumers can easily understand and compare prices.

This change would mean that stores are no longer obliged to show prices per kg, making life a bit harder for consumers who are watching their spending.

People can always choose not to shop at places that don't use their preferred measurement system. In the end I doubt most places will do anything differently than they do now, there may be a few things where metric is so irrelevant that they will no longer bother.

We are. But that was yesterday's discussion on here.

I'm still infuriated by that, but this thread is for our pure embarrassment and eye rolling to come to the fore.

Exactly. Who gives a shit what measurements are called when he's pulling this shit.
