Fuck me. What ridiculous nonsense.

Needmorelego · 28/05/2022 21:28

It's never really gone away.
A baby is born - the parents say "she's 6 pound 2" not whatever that is in kgs.
Ask some how tall they are - "I'm 5ft 3"
As mentioned already - drinks are sold in pints.
Distances are miles.
The UK is pretty much 'bilingual' with this and we have been since the 70s.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 28/05/2022 21:31

I quite like the current muddle. Where babies are weighed in lbs and oz and food in grams.

l used to teach Dt. Left 2 years ago. Plenty of kids still measuring in inches!😲

LesLavandes · 28/05/2022 21:34

Oh nooo! Happy doing - inches etc, pounds and stones but...

Money... I can't imagine changing back to imperial!!!

OversBo · 28/05/2022 21:25

What a bunch of backward thinking wank. I’m in my 50s and have only used metric. Science around the world is standardised to metric. Whatever next?

WE WILL CHANGE SCIENCE. IT WILL BEND TO BLIGHTY'S WILL 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

That's what I'm looking forward to. It would be fucking hilarious.

newnamethanks · 28/05/2022 21:38

It's bloody embarassing. What an utter twonk.

Florenz · 28/05/2022 21:38

I don't see us going back to imperial currency.

It will probably mean businesses can sell by the lb or oz or pint or whatever if they want to. Which is hardly unreasonable.

Eatingpizza · 28/05/2022 21:39

This is how pathetic he is. Yet another distraction from the fact that he can't do his job. And we walk right into it. Talk about pounds and ounces (sp?) instead the number of people living in poverty.

Then argue with each other because of kilo versus pounds or measurements versus poverty. This is his tactic for staying in power because he is a shockingly poor pm.

Muckymaisonette · 28/05/2022 21:41

Brexit - such a retrograde step, and going back to imperial is the fucking stupid cherry on top of Brexit. It will be another nail in the coffin of the decline of British Industry and commerce. As if the British weren’t enough of a laughing stock, with Boris in charge.

Why not go the while hog and bring back ducking women in ponds as witches, allowing developers to build hovels without sanitation for the poor people and flogging sailors with a cat-o-nine-tails.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 28/05/2022 21:02

Most people are perfectly happy with our current hybrid system of messed up units like double decker buses, pints and kilograms. Changing is pointless, as everyone will still use what they are comfortable with.

Who's using double decker buses as a unit of measurement?!! (apart from measuring whales and dinosaurs, which are always measured in buses.)

What about "Olympic swimming pools" (as in "all the gold in the world would fit in one Olympic sized swimming pool") Does that count as an Imperial unit?

dworky · 28/05/2022 21:45

Oh god, the ridiculous desperation to appeal to the halfwitted.

They can do that now though, but are required to also provide the price per kg. It’s not in the best interests of consumers to undo that.

Eatingpizza · 28/05/2022 21:47

BTW there is no way they would introduce it. The cost of rewriting, reprinting and redesigning the advice, measurements, equipment etc to comply by business would be shocking.

On top of the costs incurred by brexit - very very unlikely to happen.

Unless it'd be introduced in a parallel-with-metric but only-for-show option, in which case most businesses would ignore it.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 28/05/2022 21:48

Doesn't America still use the imperial system?

We use a hybrid of both really. I know every measuring jug and tape I've ever had has both printed on it.

Only our currency is strictly metric. I don't see anyone noticing much difference really.

Even my weather app lets me choose F or C and Km or miles for wind speed.

orwellwasright · 28/05/2022 21:49

Yeah. It's such a pain they can't do that already.

I asked for a pound of cheese at the deli counter the other day and the shutters came straight down, a massive klaxon sounded and I was escorted from the premises and told to stay away until I promised to use grams in future.

And don't get me started on when I asked for a pint! Jesus. The landlord literally punched my lights out.

Eatingpizza · 28/05/2022 21:49

Sorry I didn't realise that was the situation now. Shows how popular imperial is!

User7493268965 · 28/05/2022 21:52

We use both anyway, America uses mainly imperial I believe.

summer712 · 28/05/2022 21:53

latebreakfast · 28/05/2022 21:08

It's a gift for savvy greengrocers.

Before: "Apples 95p a KG"
After: "BREXIT DEAL!! APPLES NOW ONLY 80p a Lb!!"

I came on to say this but didn't know how but his exactly.

All of the things going on and this is what they change. It's only been changed as there will be a way of it appearing to make him look better

summer712 · 28/05/2022 21:54

orwellwasright · 28/05/2022 21:17

Whether he counts them in imperial or metric he's still not going to know how many kids he's got.

Haha 😂

JanglyBeads · 28/05/2022 21:54

Apparently the only countries that use it currently are the USA, Liberia and.... somewhere else which I've now forgotten, ooops!

itsgettingweird · 28/05/2022 21:54

I use both!!! I do my height and weight in feet and stones because that's what I grew up using (40's). Ds k weigh and measure in CM and kg as that's what I used from his birth.

Cakes I always do 4 4 4 2 because that's what i was taught.

Other things I measure in g/kg because that's how I learnt it.

🤷‍♀️

But I'm not surprised Johnson thinks changing the rules of something is the answer to life's difficulties. Especially after he changed the ministerial code post SG report.

saraclara · 28/05/2022 21:56

When I saw the headline quoted, I thought it was from the Daily Mash. It's just mind boggling that he's actually serious about this.

User7493268965 · 28/05/2022 21:57

All our road signs are still in miles, that didn't change

LetitiaLeghorn · 28/05/2022 21:58

This was announced months if not years ago. There's been threads on this. They're not getting rid of kilos and litres but if people want to sell in pounds, they can do. They can already sell in pounds if they want but the size of the writing can't be bigger than that if the metric weight. So people could do this already. And they're only go back to pounds if they think there's a demand for it. I don't see the big fuss. We haven't keeled over with the shock of juggling pints and litres. Or miles and kms. Some people weigh themselves in kilos, some in pounds, and I don't think it's destroyed the economy.
But hey, no ones worrying about covid anymore, monkeypox doesn't seem to have spread panic through the country, so hey why not talk up uk collapse over a few ounces.

Why not go the while hog and bring back ducking women in ponds as witches, allowing developers to build hovels without sanitation for the poor people and flogging sailors with a cat-o-nine-tails.

Or just make yourself a laughing stock by saying things like this. 🙄
