Paying extortionate council tax on second home?

NotaTorie · 27/05/2022 21:54

I know how that sounds, but I am a HARD WORKING police officer with a second home in Wales (I live in England).

My council tax has just SHOT UP on my second home. This just doesn't feel fair at all. I contribute. I work so so hard. I don't think its very fair at all.

Are any of you in this position? After not even being able to travel down during covid this feels like such a kick in the teeth.

We're all feeling the pinch unfortunately

WombatNo12 · 27/05/2022 21:56

Meanwhile hardworking local people can't afford their 1st home, not just in Wales, all over.

Holiday homes take houses out of the housing stock.

Ginandslippers · 27/05/2022 21:57

Some of us are struggling to pay our council tax on our first home. That we don't even own. So no sympathy here, sorry.

WishILivedInThrushGreen · 27/05/2022 21:57

Sell it to a local family then.

ScootsMcHoy · 27/05/2022 21:57

I think the majority of people work hard and most of us are feeling fiscally slapped in the chops right now.

PookieHook · 27/05/2022 21:58

I feel ya buddy! I am a HARD WORKING minimum wage earner and my council tax on my only home is also extortionate. It's a fucking liberty innit?

Lizziekisss · 27/05/2022 21:58

Why has it just shot up?

Elphame · 27/05/2022 21:58

How about those of us hard working people with legitimate FHL businesses who have been caught by this? A 400% council tax bill will put a lot of us out of business.

If I go under that's my sole source of income gone. My cleaners and gardeners will lose their jobs and other local tradesmen will lose income.

Not a lot of sympathy here I'm afraid for the second home owners.

WombatNo12 · 27/05/2022 21:59

Lots of holiday homeowners took the covid 10k payout too, did you miss out on that?

sugarcoatedsp · 27/05/2022 21:59

And your gold shoes are too tight...

5thHelena · 27/05/2022 21:59

Is this a wind up?

Soontobe60 · 27/05/2022 21:59

My stepfather is in a home, can’t sell his house as he’s not got capacity and is still paying Council tax on his property even though he will never live there again.

ThreeLittleDots · 27/05/2022 22:00

No sympathy. Council tax on second homes has rocketed in order to put some funds back into the communities they decimate, or pit people off.

People are being made homeless here as there are so many second homes and holiday lets.

Tough shit. If you can't afford your second home sell or rent it to a HARD WORKING local.

Yourearealboy · 27/05/2022 22:00

What doesn’t feel fair is HARD WORKING local people, who were born in the area, being priced out of being able to buy homes near their friends and family because of second home owners.

Property: 'Crazy' house prices too much for locals in some areas www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-57288920

Second homes make up almost 40 per cent of the housing stock in some communities in Wales

Excellent fishing! 🎣🤣

Buildingthefuture · 27/05/2022 22:01

Why has it shot up? What’s changed??

Beecham · 27/05/2022 22:01

Second homes destroy communities. Sorry but I have zero sympathy!

SweatyChamoisPad · 27/05/2022 22:02

I’d be prepared to be shot down a little. I live in a little cottage in Gtr Mcr that’s a band E because it’s in a conservation area. My discounted single person council tax is more than 10% of my take home salary as an administrator in the public sector - £2400pa. I spend more on council tax than I do on food, or clothes. I don’t have kids so don’t use the schools. Fit and healthy etc, don’t use social services, libraries, parks. If you think about it, I pay £200 a month to drive on roads, walk on pavements, and get my bins emptied.

We don’t pay this tax for ourselves - we pay it for everyone to use these things. We pay it forward in case we get old, or homeless, or battered by a spouse. We pay it in case we get robbed or our house catches fire. You just have to suck it up. If you can’t afford the council tax don’t have a second home.

NotaTorie · 27/05/2022 22:02

I know it makes me look like one of them. But we dont live to earn, why shouldn't I be able to own a second property to be able to chill with kiddies? I just think enough is enough now.

This! I can't buy a house as the prices are ridiculous and I can't save and rent. I also work hard so your job is not relevant.

You are brave stupid to post here. You will get zero sympathy.

GladysEehmmanuel · 27/05/2022 22:03

Couldn't you just try to WORK HARDER?

Workinghardeveryday · 27/05/2022 22:03

Are you actually joking? Some people can’t feed their kids.

give your head a shake.

dolphinsarentcommon · 27/05/2022 22:04

OP I have a second home. Tbh I think it's only right we pay full council tax. It's just a charge for services and I expect to use them.

NotaTorie · 27/05/2022 22:04

GladysEehmmanuel - THAT IS MY POINT!!!!!! its insane this is the narrative these days
