Paying extortionate council tax on second home?

NotaTorie · 27/05/2022 21:54

I know how that sounds, but I am a HARD WORKING police officer with a second home in Wales (I live in England).

My council tax has just SHOT UP on my second home. This just doesn't feel fair at all. I contribute. I work so so hard. I don't think its very fair at all.

Are any of you in this position? After not even being able to travel down during covid this feels like such a kick in the teeth.

Do you have to write up statements and reports in your role as a police officer?

Why what do you mean by that?

Your standard of written English is shit.

NotaTorie · 27/05/2022 22:15

And storm the Winter Palace to protest at them making people you pay council tax on a property you own.

Absolutely. This 'jubilee' is sick. I actually feel sick when I look at the state of affairs. BJ drinking and partying during lockdown, the gas companies having their last hurrah and everyone just jumping on the bandwagon and just making everything unaffordable

I heard a rumour the power companies were going to double the charges on holidays homes energy use.

I hope they do.

I know it makes me look like one of them. But we dont live to earn, why shouldn't I be able to own a second property to be able to chill with kiddies? I just think enough is enough now.

You can own a second property, but you will be charged a premium for taking housing stock away from local people.

In the long run you might find it cheaper to rent for the short periods of time that you want to chill with the kiddies.

notafanofsweetandsour · 27/05/2022 22:15

I'm also a HARD WORKING police officer (and as such I thought we reserved capital letters just for writing surnames on statements?!) anyway, I'm sorry but second homes should pay council tax.

Council tax pays for the local amenities, why should the local community have a smaller fund to draw from because people own houses and don't live there?

NotaTorie · 27/05/2022 22:09

When will you wake up??!!?!?!?! So what we should all just work to pay the mortgage and only the elite can own or do anything more. Sorry but this has annoyed me more than the council tax bill.

Read the room. People are struggling to survive with basics and you're crying about the council tax bill on your holiday home. 🙄🙄🙄

carefullycourageous · 27/05/2022 22:15

I agree with charging higher CT for second homeowners as holiday houses do cause significant social problems in communities. So I think YABU.

NotaTorie · 27/05/2022 22:15

Oh pray tell... Are you kidding me? I can write better than you

Stop buying avocados and skip the lattes you'll save loads of money.

Redglitter · 27/05/2022 22:16

This has got to be a wind up

Waxonwaxoff0 · 27/05/2022 22:14

Actually I think this is a troll.

You'd hope so, otherwise humanity has no hope with people as terminally thick as the OP out there breathing valuable air.

If you have a second home you are the fucking elite

I live in a national park (not in Wales) where local people struggle to afford a home just to live in, partly because of second homes. There are communities here, but the wages earnt by local people cannot compete with the wealthy cash buyers, who are often from the SE/London.

alphons · 27/05/2022 22:18

What does you bring a police officer have to do with anything?

alphons · 27/05/2022 22:19

*being

LibrariesGiveUsPower · 27/05/2022 22:19

So sell up and give the locals a chance to buy. Oh wait no they can’t afford to buy even one house because rich people in England have bought them all already.

C’est la vie.

And yes, if you own two houses you are rich to at least 98% of the population.

calmlakes · 27/05/2022 22:20

I am not very impressed by this effort.
There is too much of a rush to reach the punchline.
There needs to be more effort building a storyline, characters and fewer capital letters.

notafanofsweetandsour · 27/05/2022 22:20

I pretty sure this isn't an actual police officer. If it is I despair. And I am one!

Mulhollandmagoo · 27/05/2022 22:20

everyone just jumping on the bandwagon and just making everything unaffordable
**
2nd home owners contribute to making everything unaffordable though, it's part of the reason house prices are so high, because demand is higher than supply, because lots of people own more than one home.

How often do you go? Sell it and buy a camper?

No sympathy. Council tax on second homes has rocketed in order to put some funds back into the communities they decimate, or pit people off.

People are being made homeless here as there are so many second homes and holiday lets.

Tough shit. If you can't afford your second home sell or rent it to a HARD WORKING local.

This.
Holiday homes are destroying rural Wales.

Lurkerlot · 27/05/2022 22:21

sell It then, plenty of local people in need of houses.

HiDeDi · 27/05/2022 22:22

Well you have two choices.

suck it up buttercup
or
sell up

Pedallleur · 27/05/2022 22:23

Lizziekisss · 27/05/2022 21:58

Why has it just shot up?

Welsh govt imposed a raise in 2017 of up to 100% to collect more money/deter second home owners. Gone up again by up to 300%. If you can afford the home you can afford the raise imo

FlibbertyGiblets · 27/05/2022 22:28

Frankly I am just here for the deletion msg...

locok · 27/05/2022 22:32

why shouldn't I be able to own a second property to be able to chill with kiddies?

Who said you can't?

Arnaque · 27/05/2022 22:32

It's not often I agree with Welsh government policies but on this they are right.
2nd home owners need to contribute to the community. If you can afford a second home you can afford to pay the council tax.
Maybe rent the cottage out as a holiday let? At least then tourists can pay into local businesses and you get an income as well
