Paying extortionate council tax on second home?

NotaTorie · 27/05/2022 21:54

I know how that sounds, but I am a HARD WORKING police officer with a second home in Wales (I live in England).

My council tax has just SHOT UP on my second home. This just doesn't feel fair at all. I contribute. I work so so hard. I don't think its very fair at all.

Are any of you in this position? After not even being able to travel down during covid this feels like such a kick in the teeth.

When will you wake up??!!?!?!?!
We're all awake. Even at the back.

So what we should all just work to pay the mortgage and only the elite can own or do anything more.
If by "do anything" you mean "afford the council tax on a second property I don't need but feel entitled to because chilling with my kids, despite the local kids not being able to afford even one property in their home town" - then, yeah.

If you are going to compare yourself to the elite, you are going to spend the rest of your life dissatisfied. Instead of counting all the blessings that have accrued to you the the good fortune of you being able to do all that HARD WORK & get paid a decent-enough wage for it.

Sorry but this has annoyed me more than the council tax bill.
Excellent. Then our work here is done.

Boo fucking hoo

Honestly if this is real you're a knobber

IncompleteSenten · 27/05/2022 23:41

If you can no longer afford it, sell it. You're not entitled to a second home if you can't afford it.

We all work hard.

Why do you think you deserve a better deal than the rest of us?

You had it. You enjoyed it. Things have changed and you have a decision to make. This is adult life. 🤷‍♀️

Theluggage15 · 27/05/2022 23:41

Yeah right.

Paying extortionate council tax on second home?
GladysEehmmanuel · 27/05/2022 23:47

Further up the thread.
It's a bit nice thing to say about the police.

cheekaa · 27/05/2022 23:47

@Soontobe60 There may be a council tax exemption for a property where the resident is in a care home.

GladysEehmmanuel · 27/05/2022 23:47

*not nics

GladysEehmmanuel · 27/05/2022 23:48

Once more...
a not nice thing to say.

Crocsandshocks · 27/05/2022 23:48

Move to it full time and sell your other home?

Mynameisnotsweetheartordarling · 27/05/2022 23:50

Oh dear i knew what the responses would be. No advice just you have my sympathy it's shit and your allowed to to say so.

PickAChew · 27/05/2022 23:51

If you're real, there's no wonder our policing is in such a dire state.

GladysEehmmanuel · 27/05/2022 22:03

Couldn't you just try to WORK HARDER?

I was thinking the same GladysEehmmanuel

Op maybe you could do some ironing on the side for some extra cash

PaddingtonBearStareAgain · 27/05/2022 23:57

NotaTorie · 27/05/2022 22:02

I know it makes me look like one of them. But we dont live to earn, why shouldn't I be able to own a second property to be able to chill with kiddies? I just think enough is enough now.

Oh OP, on the off chance this is true, are your diamond slippers feeling a little tight?

jcyclops · 27/05/2022 23:58

You poor little lamb, but don't worry. You will be getting two lots of the £400 energy grant in October. You can use that to pay the increased council tax.

Alternatively make your home in Wales your first home and your home in England can be your second home. It's called flipping, and was popular with MPs until about 10 years ago when we discovered they were money grabbing fiddlers.

Nat6999 · 28/05/2022 00:06

Sell it & buy a caravan or mobile home, no council tax on them, my heart bleeds for you. My mum pays £158 a month council tax, that is nearly one week a month out of her pension paying for roads & things she doesn't use as she is housebound, the only thing she uses is the bins & that includes her 25% single person discount.
