Paying extortionate council tax on second home?

NotaTorie · 27/05/2022 21:54

I know how that sounds, but I am a HARD WORKING police officer with a second home in Wales (I live in England).

My council tax has just SHOT UP on my second home. This just doesn't feel fair at all. I contribute. I work so so hard. I don't think its very fair at all.

Are any of you in this position? After not even being able to travel down during covid this feels like such a kick in the teeth.

Is it because it's empty most of the year?

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 27/05/2022 22:06

Then sell up.

comealongponds · 27/05/2022 22:07

My heart bleeds

YABU if you don’t like it you can sell your second home, hopefully to someone who will actually live in it

maryso · 27/05/2022 22:07

why shouldn't I be able to own a second property to be able to chill with kiddies?

No reason why you can't have what you can afford. Costs change, so if you can no longer afford it, sell it. If you can, go chill. Simple.

Sortilege · 27/05/2022 22:07

🙄

bigbluebus · 27/05/2022 22:08

I know someone with the same problem. Live in England , holiday cottage on Welsh coast. Their Welsh council tax doubled last year. Think you should count yourself lucky - in the 1970's they'd just have set fire to your house!
I live in Wales during the era of 'come home to a real fire, buy a holiday cottage in Wales '.

I know it must be but...

Paying extortionate council tax on second home?
NotaTorie · 27/05/2022 22:09

When will you wake up??!!?!?!?! So what we should all just work to pay the mortgage and only the elite can own or do anything more. Sorry but this has annoyed me more than the council tax bill.

But if you tried NOT BEING SO POOR you could afford your second council tax, spend your disposable near the second home for the six days a year you use it and trickle wealth down.
Sounds like you need to skill up.

EL8888 · 27/05/2022 22:09

I’m playing my tiny violin for you really hard

No one needs a 2nd home. You chose that indulgence and you need to pay for it. Or sell it and not pay a 2nd lot of council tax. Do you think you should be exempt?!

Mooda · 27/05/2022 22:10

If you can't afford it you should sell it. Maybe someone forced to rent by second homers hoarding all the property could even buy it? Win-win!

I know it must be but...

Is that Nigel from Spinal Tap? He doesn't half look like a young Martin Freeman.

When will you and people like you pull their head out of their arse??

So many people can barely afford to live in one home right now and you are bitching about affording your second home?

My god.

Do you have to write up statements and reports in your role as a police officer?

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 27/05/2022 22:12

Yes. We should all wake up.

And storm the Winter Palace to protest at them making people you pay council tax on a property you own.

Why what do you mean by that?

So sell it.

It was always a luxury (that came at the expense of the local community). Now it's a luxury you can't afford.

GCAcademic · 27/05/2022 22:13

No one ever thinks of those of us who have third and fourth homes. We are some of the most hard-done-by members of society.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 27/05/2022 22:13

Tough shit. If you don't like it, sell. Owning just one property is a privilege nowadays, and yes I am a homeowner.

KarmaStar · 27/05/2022 22:13

Sorry this isn't real it's a goading post.
Fool.

SkirridHill · 27/05/2022 22:13

If this is indeed real, you sound like a complete twat.

mumda · 27/05/2022 22:14

I heard a rumour the power companies were going to double the charges on holidays homes energy use.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 27/05/2022 22:14

Actually I think this is a troll.

StiggyZardust · 27/05/2022 22:14

I've been trying to sell a retirement flat for over 2 years, since my mother died. As it's been empty for so long I'm now having to pay double the council tax, £500 a month.
