Paying extortionate council tax on second home?

NotaTorie · 27/05/2022 21:54

I know how that sounds, but I am a HARD WORKING police officer with a second home in Wales (I live in England).

My council tax has just SHOT UP on my second home. This just doesn't feel fair at all. I contribute. I work so so hard. I don't think its very fair at all.

Are any of you in this position? After not even being able to travel down during covid this feels like such a kick in the teeth.

I think the council tax change is a good thing & think they should roll it out to other areas.

locok · 27/05/2022 22:34

So what we should all just work to pay the mortgage and only the elite can own or do anything more.

🤔

Is this a Plaid public service announcement by stealth?

As a welsh native, pay up or sod off 🤷🏼‍♀️

Locals cannot afford property prices, huge swathes of property which used to inhabit the private rented sector is now owned by wealthy outsiders who jumped on our low property prices and promptly turned them into air bnb’s so that other ‘aspirational’ outsiders can come and Instagram our rural communities who have low average earnings because ya know… it’s rural and the big corporates don’t tend to set up shop halfway up a mountain … these communities who incidentally provide a lot of agricultural support to the UK tend to hate townies that can’t close gates and traipse through our land without a care or thought with their badly behaved lockdown puppies who bother livestock 🤷🏼‍♀️

we like our communities and accept low average earnings but second home owners are putting the very fabric of Wales at risk. Friday nights are hell as we watch everyone traipse to their holiday homes, followed by a Tesco van delivering their shopping rather than buying local 🙄

Wales is not a playground!

Pedallleur · 27/05/2022 22:38

If you can afford the mortgage on a second home, the council tax is small beer. Let's not forget the second home owners who dodged the council tax during the pandemic. Didn't worry about it then.

AchatAVendre · 27/05/2022 22:41

Just sell up to one of those locals queuing up to buy all these homes and use the money to buy a holiday home in France instead. The council tax in many places for a nice 2 bedroom cottage is no more than 1000 euros per year, and you only pay the residency part of that if you don't live in it full time.

You're not meant to do things like own holiday homes in the UK, unless you're one of the super rich. Although its normal in many other European countries to have a second home, in the UK its one of the many things that might make working and commuting worthwhile that you are no longer supposed to do. Even the Soviet Union didn't do away with dachas but god forbid you have fun in Wales at the weekend without being born there!

Stop eating avocados and cancel Netflix then. Apparently it is the answer to all of the millennials prayers who have been priced out of getting their first home. Might work for you....

catsonahottinroof · 27/05/2022 22:41

Don't know but I thought this was a piss take like the Daily Mail type stories.

paddingtonstares · 27/05/2022 22:44

Waiting for the deletion 😂. I think second homes should be quadruple charged never mind price gone up. They should be let/sold cheaply to local families in need of housing. gets coat and runs 🤣

CapMarvel · 27/05/2022 22:45

Sell it then, and then maybe a local family who need it could live in it 12 months a year rather than you for 2 days out of a month.

Just a thought.

Fairisleflora · 27/05/2022 22:46

2nd homes are morally wrong. Well done the Welsh government for whacking up the council tax.

MacaroniBaloney · 27/05/2022 22:48

Are you this tone deaf at work?

maryso · 27/05/2022 22:55

Hopefully this is the start of a progressive increase, and will infect the rest of the UK. It won't put off all multiple homes but will help. Depending on the impact, perhaps continue ratcheting it up to 1000%, 2000%, 3000%, ... until the problem recedes sufficiently. New blood is often refreshing but not when parachuted in without integration and mutual respect. This thread is a total piss take, though, but that's just me thinking nobody could possibly be recruited into any police force with such ignorance of society.

Really OP, Really?😂

I had a flat which sat empty for well over a year while we couldn't sell it but even then I agree with charging more tax for people with second homes and I hope it happens in Cornwall too. It won't kill the tourist trade while there are hotels, licensed B&B's and caravan parks.

transformandriseup · 27/05/2022 23:17

Or get a second job or just work harder like us poor people are told to do.

Snowflakes1122 · 27/05/2022 23:17

I live in Wales. There is increasing resentment towards people purchasing homes for holiday cottages. Many people are being forced out of the area, away from family.

Drakeford is only going to make it more difficult for second home owners, so I don’t see things getting easier for you.

YABU

Snugglepumpkin · 27/05/2022 23:17

It isn't high enough - a second homes council tax should be a lot more than a first homes council tax is & higher still if used as an Air B&B/holiday let even once.

Stop draining the countryside of homes & hope - sell up at a fair rate to a family who will live there full time.

You've got a home already.
Let someone else have a chance to have a home too.

Are these your own kiddies you are chilling with or are you offering free child care?
