To be excited about Jubilee Street Parties

FishfingerFlinger · 27/05/2022 14:24

We’re holding a street party on our road and I am really looking forward to it. We have some lovely neighbours I already know and many I don’t know yet but think it will be lovely to get people in the neighbourhood together.

I keep seeing people sniping and griping about street parties, and don’t really understand why. What’s the problem exactly?

YANBU - Street parties are a fun community event!

YABU - Humbug to street parties!

I'm looking forward to ours. It's a chance for all the kids on the street to play out with no cars. What's not to like really?

GooglyEyeballs · 27/05/2022 14:35

I'm really excited! I have a great set of neighbours, we're all good friends and we regularly have parties and the whole street comes and all the kids get along. Any excuse to get together and have a good time! We live on the outskirts of a town so it's nice to feel like we have a supportive fun community. Can't wait!

IHateWasps · 27/05/2022 14:36

YABU. I don't see the continuation of the Monarchy as something to celebrate, plus bread and circuses comes to mind.

balalake · 27/05/2022 14:36

As long as you respect those who choose not to take part, fine by me.

UnsuitableHat · 27/05/2022 14:40

Not everyone’s cup of tea I guess, and you’d perhaps feel a bit trapped by one if you didn’t want to attend. Plus I think some people don’t feel very celebratory at the mo. But have a good time!

DenholmElliot1 · 27/05/2022 14:40

I would have loved it too if my street had one.

Just a thought - those of you who don't agree with the monarchy - are you still taking the 2 day bank holiday we've been allocated? Even though you don't agree with it?

PaddingtonBearStareAgain · 27/05/2022 14:41

I think they're great if you want to be involved and horrible if you don't.

As long as both are respected then it's fine.

Dinotour · 27/05/2022 14:42

We aren't having one as we are all miserable fuckers but I think it's lovely for those who want to do it.

PaddingtonBearStareAgain · 27/05/2022 14:43

Im not anti monarchy, but just to point out only 1 day is extra. The other is the BH that should be on Monday, but has been moved.

Heghodge · 27/05/2022 14:46

Well I am disinterested in the monarchy, which is lucky, as the nearest jubilee party to me is 110 miles away (just looked at the official map). It seems all the other Highlanders are also disinterested in the monarchy 😆

I'm self employed. I don't work on Fridays and do very limited work on Thursdays.

The fact that I'm not really a supporter of the monarchy is irrelevant. I don't want to be involved in the Jubilee celebrations but as long as anything local takes place out of my sight people can get on with it. I'm going away at the weekend of the Jubilee anyway.

I'm self employed, bank Holidays don't mean anything to me. Don't support the monarchy either.

In addition, I have 3 exams that weekend, so ordinarily I wouldn't mind, but I'll probably find any street parties antisocial behaviour and adding to my stress 😅

Is this the new "you shouldn't be allowed to celebrate christmas unless you believe in my imaginary friend"?

edwinbear · 27/05/2022 14:54

Not my sort of thing at all, but I'm delighted for those who do like them.

Happylittlethoughts · 27/05/2022 14:55

Not actually heard of any in my area. Probably be a bit divisive in my area of Scotland😬

1 day Bank Holiday. We always had 1 of them. Be difficult to go to work when your office is shut I think...

My workplace will be closed. Do you think I should break in?

Happylittlethoughts · 27/05/2022 14:59

As far as the .."Are you taking the 2 days holiday? "
Well, the day I can choose NOT to pay for those paedophiles and public leeches is the day I'll choose not to go into work instead. When I can opt out, I will believe me.

Happylittlethoughts · 27/05/2022 15:00

*Choose to go

hangrylady · 27/05/2022 15:00

YANBU, but there are some right miseries around, especially on here. I don't love the monarchy but a day off and a party, count me in! There's been enough depressing shit over the last few years. Enjoy.

Oh get away with you! Non-christians take Christmas Day, and Easter.

Republicans can do what they want. Their taxes are paying for it along with taxes from the royal family fans.

PeekAtYou · 27/05/2022 15:07

I'm looking forward to our street party too. I don't know my neighbours well but they are all really great and should be a good event. It helps that we are a cul de sac so not inconveniencing people.

What a stupid comment. Regardless of anything else, people can hardly work if their workplaces are closed. Confused

I'm a self-employed dog-walker. All my clients are home over the long weekend and don't need me - what do you want me to do, turn up to their houses and force them to pay me to take their dogs out? 🙄

And just how would someone return their bank holiday?
