To be excited about Jubilee Street Parties

FishfingerFlinger · 27/05/2022 14:24

We’re holding a street party on our road and I am really looking forward to it. We have some lovely neighbours I already know and many I don’t know yet but think it will be lovely to get people in the neighbourhood together.

I keep seeing people sniping and griping about street parties, and don’t really understand why. What’s the problem exactly?

YANBU - Street parties are a fun community event!

YABU - Humbug to street parties!

I’d be happy to have a street party. Just not a Jubilee party.

Why should my taxes pay to support them?

PeopleAllergy · 27/05/2022 17:16

But there will definitely be plenty of children in attendance too making them most of having free run of the street.

Then the following weekend, if they’re anything like the people on mumsnet, those same neighbours will all be moaning about the kids playing in the street. 😬

Benjispruce4 · 27/05/2022 17:17

I don’t mind a street party just not for the jubilee.

YouHaveYourFathersBreasts · 27/05/2022 17:18

I think it’s a lovely way to get people together and have fun- everyone needs a bit of that, especially with the shit times we’ve all had and many of us are facing. I’m going to a family do next weekend- it’s a great excuse to get everyone together as basically all of us are off work for at least one day.

But. The royal family piss me off. I used to be indifferent to them but now, they can all get in the fucking bin.

Biker47 · 27/05/2022 17:23

I'm away for something on the Friday and coming back on the Saturday, when there's supposedly a party happening on the estate somewhere, talk of closing a road; will not be impressed if I can't get in to park my car after hours of driving on Saturday.

Polyanne · 27/05/2022 17:23

I’d love a street party but my street isn’t having one unfortunately. I have great respect for the Queen but after she’s gone I think we should have a referendum on a republic to get rid of the spongers coming after her.

Benjispruce4 · 27/05/2022 17:24

I will definitely get the bunting out if Boris ever takes the hint and resigns! Now that’s a reason to party in the streets!

Not a bad idea.

MarshaBradyo · 27/05/2022 17:26

I like my neighbours and we do drinks anyway at times, so this is an easy way for the dc to have some fun

The four year old loves a party

Hopefully the weather will be good

CheeseCakeSunflowers · 27/05/2022 17:50

I work in retail so we don't get time off but I have booked Friday and Saturday as holiday because I want to join in with our village celebration. Regardless of opinion on the Royals I think a lot of people see it as the first national event we can all join in since the pandemic started. I hope everyone who is doing something has fun.

SpaghettiSquash · 28/05/2022 15:37

It's lovely that you're having a street party. I don't think people were keen around our way which is a shame. One of my earliest memories is the street party we had for the Silver Jubilee.

We aren't having one as we are all miserable fuckers but I think it's lovely for those who want to do it.

I'm pleased to say I live on Miserable Fucker Street, too!

It's mostly middle-aged and retired people, and approx 30-40% families with teens or young kids. I wondered if the families with kids might want to do something, but it appears not. I'm delighted that I'll be able to be an old grinch in peace, if I so choose, and not have the road filled with people enjoying themselves noisily while I am listening to The Archers and then watching MotoGP.

And I'll be able to go out without having to park my car streets away.

YABU. I don't see the continuation of the Monarchy as something to celebrate, plus bread and circuses comes to mind.

Ditto.

The only time I'll be celebrating anything to do with the monarchy will be the day it's abolished.

SabrePrattler · 28/05/2022 17:05

Lol at snooty pants and her gotcha about anti-monarchists taking the two day bank holiday. Our taxes help pay for the whole gaudy show, so yeah I'll gleefully take them!

And I hope everyone who's having a Jubilee street party has a lovely time. Just don't get so tiddly that you fall into the shrubbery, or declare undying love to the hot guy from no.48, when standing next to your husband.

Oh yes, we could have a leaving party in honour of the fucker who had all the leaving parties finally leaving!

TarpaulinEyes · 28/05/2022 17:15

No street party where I am, everyone is too apathetic to organise one and I'm too lazy to as well. I shall make myself a snack fest and enjoy it in the garden with a bottle of booze and my cats. I have heard tell of a Jubilee church market one of the days so might visit that.

The town has a competition to find the crown jewels in various shops which has a dubious tone to it I feel. There is live music too which might be fun.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 28/05/2022 17:25

It's caused uproar in my street! If there ends up being a party, it's not going to be very friendly. People from one section of the street, applied to have a different section closed. Residents found out and weren't impressed. Turns out original lady didn't want her part of the street closed as her husband had to go to work and didnt want to park elsehwere. I'm not even sure if another application went in. I really should check..

yellowsuninthesky · 28/05/2022 17:31

Definitely humbug. It's 2022, not 1952.

Yes but that was in 1977. It's 2022. We've moved on. And forced fun is not fun.

Dobbysgotthesocks · 28/05/2022 17:33

No I'm really annoyed about ours. It's all day Sunday. They expect the street to be closed and all vehicles moved from the street to accommodate their party. I'm disabled and not able to walk far to and from my car. I live alone and don't have friends/family nearby who could support me to move it and what happens if I need to get out during the street party. There is no consideration for those of us who do not wish to attend - it will be right outside my house. I'm undergoing chemo at the moment and don't want the noise, hassle and inevitable clean up afterwards.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 28/05/2022 17:35

I'm not anti at all but it's not for me. I have stuff to do.

Sounds like this party could be worth going to!

bumblefeline · 28/05/2022 17:44

Hopefully our street is not having one. Most of the people down our street are vile and I don't want to socialise with them bar my lovely neighbours. I hope they don't close the street as my daughter needs to get to work and my partner who is on call will need to be able to get out for emergencies.

MissMarplesGoddaughter · 28/05/2022 17:48

Our road is putting up bunting and flags on Thursday. We have a street party planned for Sunday. Games for the children, 50s music, we’re all dressing up and have sorted the food and drink out. There will be about 40 of us. We’re really looking forward to it
