To be excited about Jubilee Street Parties

FishfingerFlinger · 27/05/2022 14:24

We’re holding a street party on our road and I am really looking forward to it. We have some lovely neighbours I already know and many I don’t know yet but think it will be lovely to get people in the neighbourhood together.

I keep seeing people sniping and griping about street parties, and don’t really understand why. What’s the problem exactly?

YANBU - Street parties are a fun community event!

YABU - Humbug to street parties!

It's not people being party poopers or unsociable. It's the celebration of the monarchy, which I find unpalatable as do many.

PurpleButterflyWings · 27/05/2022 15:11

I am excited too. We are having one in our cul de sac. (20 homes.) It's being organised by 5 people in the close, and everyone has contributed financially. There should be around 50-60 people there. A mix of elderly people, middle-aged couples and singletons, young and not-so young singletons, and young families with children.

I am very excited. Grin Hope it doesn't rain! I have a bunch of jubilee bunting and flags for the house and garden which are going up on Monday (for the week,) and some jubilee hats for me and DH, (and our DC who are coming too.)

Your thread will attract anti-Royalists though @FishfingerFlinger But just ignore them. They love to flock to pro-Royal threads, and shit all over them, and fill them with toxic anti-Royal bile. Thankfully, no-one I know is a Royal hater. They'd be deleted from my life if they were. Indifferent? Fine. Hater? Feck off.

I'll have a street party when the monarchy is abolished.

IHateWasps · 27/05/2022 15:13

I'm sure that they're only too grateful to feck off.

I'm really excited! I have a great set of neighbours, we're all good friends and we regularly have parties and the whole street comes and all the kids get along. Any excuse to get together and have a good time! We live on the outskirts of a town so it's nice to feel like we have a supportive fun community. Can't wait!

Sounds wonderful!! Grin

Proudboomer · 27/05/2022 15:15

Unfortunately I live in a street with only 6 houses in it and no children and no street party. There is quite a few organised events going on all free like a community picnic on the green or Faye’s in a few community centres. There is plenty of paid events in local pubs and a evening concert in gardens in my local town. Most things that are ticketed are sold out now. I doubt I will do but I am going to decorate with bunting and flags and maybe do a cream tea for my mum. I won’t get the bank holiday Friday off as I will still have to work so will do the tea over the weekend.

The irony that the only bile-filled post is from this forelock-tugger. Royal 'hater' is a rather childish way to put it. Republican is better, no. And many people are of similar opinion nowadays.

I think they may have already deleted someone who wears a jubilee hat. There's enjoying a street party, then there's looking like a twat.

That sounds lovely. Smile There are loads of events in our local town too, over the 4 day weekend, so we will probably go to a few of them too. The whole cul de sac I live in is going to put Jubilee bunting all over the homes and gardens. It's going to look amazing. Grin

I would have loved it too if my street had one.

Just a thought - those of you who don't agree with the monarchy - are you still taking the 2 day bank holiday we've been allocated? Even though you don't agree with it?

I'm unemployed - I can get pissed every day if I wish 😄

FishfingerFlinger · 27/05/2022 15:23

I’m ambivalent to the monarchy, it’s just a nice excuse to have a party IMO.

i’m not religious but love Christmas and I’m not into the occult but it doesn’t stop us going trick or treating on Halloween.

Community spirit is important and it’s a good excuse to get people together.

Exactly this. Smile I love this kind of thing. Really brings the community together. It's a lovely community where I live anyway, and everyone of every age group is really looking forward to it! Grin

But you wouldn't knock on doors of those that aren't taking part and at Christmas you don't shout spoilsport at those of other religions that don't celebrate.

Each to their own.

Christmas isn't just a religious celebration or time of year. And I'm laughing at Halloween and the occult. Check, and read up on, the origins of both!

Proudboomer · 27/05/2022 15:38

I am old enough to remember the silver jubilee. Large street party for the kids during the day and food, booze and dancing for the parents in the evening. Doors were left open and everyone joined in. I am sure that they weren’t all royalists celebrating but there was much more community spirit then and no one was interested in the politics of it all they just to enjoy themselves. I even still have my silver jubilee mug given out by my school. The queen on one side and the schools name and year on the back.

NoRegretsNoTearsGoodbye · 27/05/2022 15:43

@DenholmElliot1 that’s such a bizarre comment! If our work places are closed what can we do?? And we’ve paid for the circus too so too damn right I’m taking the weekend - and leaving the country!

NoRegretsNoTearsGoodbye · 27/05/2022 15:45

@PurpleButterflyWings you sound very angry! You okay? 😄

nearlyspringyay · 27/05/2022 15:46

It's a bit late to organise if you want to have an actual street party and close the road, you need a licence.

If their workplace is closed how they are they supposed to not take the day off?

But my point is that the origins don’t particularly matter. I don’t honestly care that much that the jubilee is about the queen. It just creates an occasion that facilitates a celebration.

From a purely practical perspective we’ve jumped at the opportunity to close the road for a street party because the council were waving through applications for road closures without the usual fees and fuss.

I wil be working. According to our care home it's not a bank holiday 🤣
I would have loved a street party I have fond memories of the silver jubilee street party when l was 10

SouperNoodle · 27/05/2022 15:48

I'm a bit gutted that our street aren't interested in one. I'd love to get together and get to know the neighbours better.

I have seen plenty of comments around which are just anti the whole notion of a street party, irrespective of the monarchy.
