To be excited about Jubilee Street Parties

FishfingerFlinger · 27/05/2022 14:24

We’re holding a street party on our road and I am really looking forward to it. We have some lovely neighbours I already know and many I don’t know yet but think it will be lovely to get people in the neighbourhood together.

I keep seeing people sniping and griping about street parties, and don’t really understand why. What’s the problem exactly?

YANBU - Street parties are a fun community event!

YABU - Humbug to street parties!

@FishfingerFlinger i agree - but we live on a main road!

I like the idea of the Big Lunches that were introduced after Jo Cox died. A chance for neighbours to get together without the outdated cringe.

those of you who don't agree with the monarchy - are you still taking the 2 day bank holiday we've been allocated?

Not everyone gets bank holidays. My dd is a barista who will be working like a usual day.

I would have loved it too if my street had one.

Just a thought - those of you who don't agree with the monarchy - are you still taking the 2 day bank holiday we've been allocated? Even though you don't agree with it?

I’m retired. So they’re the same as any other day. It’s my birthday on the Friday and I am having afternoon tea at a local vineyard.

Figstar4eva · 27/05/2022 16:00

@DenholmElliot1, in answer to your question. I will not be taking the 2 day bank holiday. I'm self employed so will work these two days.
I'm from a commonwealth country and don't recognize the Queen as head of state.

dementedpixie · 27/05/2022 16:01

I have no interest in Jubilee celebrations and won't be doing anything. Dh will be off but only because he took next week off as annual leave.

I have seen plenty of comments around which are just anti the whole notion of a street party, irrespective of the monarchy.

I am not personally interested in going to a street party, but have never lived on a street where people have organised one so it hasn't come up. They are just not the type of socialising I enjoy, with people I don't know well. I do chat to neighbours but am happy having them just as neighbours.

One thing I have been thinking about when wandering about is the plastic bunting I have seen looks absolutely shit. If I had a street party, I would at least go all out and make proper bunting. A very poor show I think.

easyday · 27/05/2022 16:02

I'm really surprised there isn't anything going on near me, as there are a couple parks either end of the grid if street (which has two primary schools) and they each have community members. There's an Easter and Halloween thing and summer picnic day year so I thought one of them would organise a Jubilee party. Not many royalists round here I guess!
If there had been I probably would have gone when the kids were small.

Yes, there will be that, too.

Apologies for my possibly patronising post about reading up on the origins of the things you celebrate. It wasn't meant that way. I take your point, but it's also nice to know the origins of these things you're celebrating! Christmas doesn't necessarily = religious or Halloween = occult.

User7493268965 · 27/05/2022 16:10

I hope everyone enjoys their parties but I am glad there isn't one up our street, there are very few DC and I guess most are in areas where there are families with children.

As for not taking the Bank Holidays, many people probably don't agree with what a lot of the other ones signify but if work is closed you can hardly not take it and have holiday at another time as they are statutory days

FangsForTheMemory · 27/05/2022 16:10

Whatever floats your boat. I'm planning to do long long country walks to avoid it all.

Fairislefandango · 27/05/2022 16:10

Nothing wrong with a street party imo. I'm not a fan of the monarchy though, so I'd feel like a bit of a hypocrite joining in!

Just a thought - those of you who don't agree with the monarchy - are you still taking the 2 day bank holiday we've been allocated? Even though you don't agree with it?

Confused Well kind of no, since I'm a teacher and it's during half-term, so the bank holidays will make no difference to me. But how do you propose people avoid taking the bank holiday if their work is closed?

User7493268965 · 27/05/2022 16:14

Next door are JW but they still have to take the BHs at Christmas, I'm sure they would rather have it some other time.

I'm in that camp.

Blocking off roads can cause major problems for people too, snd I don't mean a minor inconvenience.

Fairislefandango · 27/05/2022 16:15

Your thread will attract anti-Royalists though @FishfingerFlinger But just ignore them. They love to flock to pro-Royal threads, and shit all over them, and fill them with toxic anti-Royal bile. Thankfully, no-one I know is a Royal hater. They'd be deleted from my life if they were. Indifferent? Fine. Hater? Feck off.

How childish. I'm anti-royalin the sense that I don't think we should gave a monarchy. It's perfectly possible to be a republican without being a 'hater' of the royal family. I don't know them.

balalake · 27/05/2022 14:36

As long as you respect those who choose not to take part, fine by me.

And the non-participants respect those who do but I doubt it, we've already seen it on here, the sneery comments.

Ahgoonyegirlye · 27/05/2022 16:18

Street parties are great, we have an annual one as well as regular Street Plays for our kids throughout the year. You don’t need to ‘celebrate’ the Queen to have one.
in fact , we’re the opposite and aren’t having one for the Jubilee, no one round here seems to give a damn about the Royals.

I think people have said they don't like them - that is not sneery. Other people have said they do not want to celebrate the monarchy - that is not sneery. Plenty of people hold legitimate views that a republic would be better than a monarchy.

I personally did say wearing a jubilee hat would make someone look like a twat, but I am standing by that comment!

Ahgoonyegirlye · 27/05/2022 16:22

‘those of you who don't agree with the monarchy - are you still taking the 2 day bank holiday we've been allocated?’

well ones been moved and ones extra but yes of course. To leave the country for a week while using 3 days hols only!
i’m not a Scottish but while living in Edinburgh, happily took St Andrews Day off. In the USA took the time around Thanksgiving and 4th July.
You don’t have to believe in, oh I don’t know God for example, to take the Christmas public holidays. Or Easter. Or any of them.

darisdet · 27/05/2022 16:27

There's nothing hereabouts for the jubilee either., I'm glad to say, unless someone does something impromptu. Though there's one or two of the neighbours who are of the opinion it's a bit working class, the monarchy celebration. Unpleasant snobbery really.

BeyondMyWits · 27/05/2022 16:42

Nope, I'm working...

There's a street party with road closure one road over from mine, everyone is whatsapping about the cheap plastic tat they are buying, bunting, tablecovers, hats, plates, flags. Another load of cheap consumer crap being shipped from China only to be shipped back and burned in a few weeks time.

prettybird · 27/05/2022 16:42

No street parties or very few going on in Scotland.

The very few events that I ça find all seem to be in various forms of community hall or a park or voluntary organisation with a royal connection.

Funnily enough it’s been the long-standing older residents here that have really been the champion organisers here - I think the younger families are more likely to have other plans, not lived in the area as long so don’t feel they can organise, or are just too busy.

All the older and frailer residents have been ‘adopted’ by someone else on the street to help get them out to enjoy the party.

But there will definitely be plenty of children in attendance too making them most of having free run of the street.

I think it’s just really lovely to have the different generations all together.

Well work is shut for those 2 days so I don't have a choice...if I did then I'd be working.

AuntieMarys · 27/05/2022 17:12

I'm in my 60s and don't give a stuff about the monarchy. So I will not be attending or watching anything vaguely Royal.
