To be excited about Jubilee Street Parties

FishfingerFlinger · 27/05/2022 14:24

We’re holding a street party on our road and I am really looking forward to it. We have some lovely neighbours I already know and many I don’t know yet but think it will be lovely to get people in the neighbourhood together.

I keep seeing people sniping and griping about street parties, and don’t really understand why. What’s the problem exactly?

YANBU - Street parties are a fun community event!

YABU - Humbug to street parties!

YABU! I wonder what others in the street REALLY think.. but fair play though, enjoy your day! Wink

The only time I'll be celebrating anything to do with the monarchy will be the day it's abolished

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

I'll be first up with the celebratory bunting!

There's no escaping it entirely though (to whoever mentioned the Archers). I bet they have a themed episode.

Persephoned · 28/05/2022 18:16

There’s a street party on my street, road closed, bouncy castle etc and I’m really not looking forward to it and won’t be going - I
think they mostly appeal to families or
couples - but I think a lot of others are looking forward to it and so certainly don’t begrudge it for one afternoon/evening. I’ll just go out/shut myself away!

I would have loved it too if my street had one.

Just a thought - those of you who don't agree with the monarchy - are you still taking the 2 day bank holiday we've been allocated? Even though you don't agree with it?

How you not take a bank holiday? Demand to work even though your employer is closed? Deliberately do some banking?

we have friends coming over. Not a jubilee thing, just drinks and food, its a BH, kids are home.

i dont live on a street nor estate so no idea of any party.

ive seen a lot of Facebook post “not celebrating the jubilee” etc.

hypocrits. Gonna enjoy the days off the same. If they’re that offended by it, go volunteer somewhere, go litter picking, beach clean… thought not

MrsDThomas · 28/05/2022 20:25

I have absolutely no objection to jubilee parties. I remember the 77 one!

Yeah absolutely. Makes it more fun. It’s my taxes supporting the Monarchy, you bet I’m taking that bank holiday. I’ve paid for it over 35 years of working. Vivre la Republique💪🏻

Really pathetic.

Brazooka · 28/05/2022 22:42

Will you all be making the ridiculous trifle ? 😂

User7493268965 · 28/05/2022 23:00

I'm not going to any party as I hate stuff like that but I was hoping that M&S was going to do their version of the trifle but they haven't, I'm certainly not making one

DracarysThis · 28/05/2022 23:23

YABVVU. More jingoistic shite at a time when we have a PM tightening his death grip on power, her maj bailing out Handy Andy, with millions experiencing hardship. This lot would have us all back to the 1950s, when folk doffed their cap and new their place. Fuck that right in the arse.

Meadowland · 28/05/2022 23:26

"I'll have a street party when the monarchy is abolished "

Me too. Now that will be something to celebrate.

Hilarious 🤣

Ownedbymycats · 29/05/2022 01:27

I'm really looking forward to it.I live in a very rural area in NI and will be having a big party with family.

ilovesooty · 29/05/2022 01:36

If people enjoy a couple of days off with family and friends that's nice for them.

I'm just glad I'm going somewhere with no access to UK TV.

You know what, I was actually considering giving it a bash, just for shits and giggles. I probably won’t bother though.

Flatandhappy · 30/05/2022 05:02

I don’t live in the UK but what is wrong with a nice social event that brings neighbours together. Also not a fan of “The Royal Family” but you have to admit the Queen really has given her life to service and I think that is worth respecting.

chocolatemademefat · 30/05/2022 05:20

I’m in Scotland and haven’t heard anyone say they’re going to a street party - I’m not anti royal but would be surprised if I heard anyone had arranged a party. And I’m self employed so will actually lose money on the day off but I’ll happily suck it up as I admire the queen.

don’t know why everything has to take a nasty turn - how can people refuse to take a bank holiday?

MissTrip82 · 30/05/2022 05:35

I find it really hard to believe there is anyone of average intelligence who truly can’t grasp this.

You may not agree but you can’t think of a single reason? Really? Not one, at all? Even one you can refute?

I sit on the fence with the whole Royal thing. But my feeling is that the "Royal family" is finished in the form that we've known it.
Charlie sitting on the golden throne and the fucking crown getting its own car, I believe, has tipped the balance.

Sciurus83 · 30/05/2022 14:12

Can't wait! Loads of neighbours I've not met, hopefully this will be the chance. Not pro monarchy at all, hate trifle. Pro hopefully meeting nice neighbours.

Brefugee · 30/05/2022 14:15

Sounds fun, enjoy it, OP.

There is always one. TBH given how many people don't work mon-fri 9-5 jobs these days, i would be very interested to see just how many people actually do get an extra day off (and all the other bank holidays too) and how many actually either get a proper day off in lieu or time and a half (or double time or whatever it would be). That is what really interests me about this extra holiday.

I loved our Silver Jubilee party at the Young Farmers' back in the day. Great BBQ, fun games and a disco. And we all got a mug. I still have mine.

Watermill · 30/05/2022 14:15

I am a stereotypical southerner who would only speak to my neighbours if something was on fire.

The idea of sitting out in the street and eating with them is a total abomination.

Brefugee · 30/05/2022 14:19

Christmas doesn't necessarily = religious or Halloween = occult.

Christmas is literally the smushing together of the words Christ's Mass, as in a Mass for Christ.
Halloween is also All Hallows' Eve. The evening before All Hallows (aka All Saints) when the scary lanterns are to scare away the evil spirits who hang around. Religious as anything.
