Protections needed to stop monkeypox?

With news today that 57 cases of money pox have been discovered in the U.K., should we be putting some protections/mitigations in place to slow the spread and make sure the NHS can cope?

I don’t think lockdown would be appropriate at this stage but should the government be implementing things like mask mandates, social distancing, the rule of 6 and bans on indoor socialising and large events?

Surely we’ve learned from covid that it’s important to act early to prevent the need for more restrictions later?

Absolutely not , as much as people love to panic monkey pox is not highly contagious, you need close contact .
no more lockdowns and similar stuff ! I spend 2 years without seeing my family , I don’t think I would survive mentally to any more and I mean literally

Isaidnoalready · 24/05/2022 23:15

My inbox has been full of petitions for a lockdown already the amount of unsubscribing I've done is insane who is starting these petitions?

mmmmmmghturep · 24/05/2022 23:19

Probably the people who want to WFH and not have to commute Thats who i suspect is starting petitions

It is not transmit by airborne droplets.

It is transmitted by droplets expelled by coughing and sneezing at close quarters, and by contact with the fluids from MP blisters - skin on skin, or mouth to skin, or by touching contaminated bedding or clothing, etc.

It is not airborne the way covid or measles are, and less easily transmitted therefore.

What would a face mask do on a disease that transmits via:
touching clothing, bedding or towels used by someone with the monkeypox rash
touching monkeypox skin blisters or scabs
Sexual intercourse
???

It would protect you from inadvertently being coughed or sneezed upon in close proximity to someone with MP, if you were travelling on a plane or a train, etc.

This current outbreak outside Africa is propelled by sexual contact, but that is not the only route of transmission.

milkyaqua · 25/05/2022 01:36

From the CDC:

Transmission of monkeypox virus occurs when a person comes into contact with the virus from an animal, human, or materials contaminated with the virus. The virus enters the body through broken skin (even if not visible), respiratory tract, or the mucous membranes (eyes, nose, or mouth). ...

Human-to-human transmission is thought to occur primarily through large respiratory droplets. Respiratory droplets generally cannot travel more than a few feet, so prolonged face-to-face contact is required. Other human-to-human methods of transmission include direct contact with body fluids or lesion material, and indirect contact with lesion material, such as through contaminated clothing or linens.

Even now China is managing to keep covid cases and deaths low using light touch protections such as limiting mixing.

Told you it was a windup.

Quartz2208 · 25/05/2022 07:40

I think New Zealand zero covid policy bit as well might be a bit out of touch given they are averaging 8000 cases a day.

That said New Zealand did work the vaccination process very well (apart from closing the borders to New Zealand citizens) because the case fatality rate is superb.

Getting hold of vaccines and vaccinating those who need it might be a start. It will only be the under 50s who need looking at as the smallpox vaccine holds up

Shtfday · 25/05/2022 08:11

Im not suggesting mitigations are needed right now, but it is only right that the data is watched and if needed mitigations used. The thing with a transmissible virus is it can go from a few manageable cases that are being watched to dissipating and not becoming an issue - pre covid this happened with Ebola or it can continue to spread until you have a out of control spread in communities. it is a watch and wait situation - act too late and you have missed the opportunity to contain. act too soon and people cant see why mitigations are needed and maybe they weren't and the virus would have dissipated regardless.
In most cases the watch, wait and see approach barely registers or is quickly forgotten by the general public because the monitoring, contact isolations that are put in place contain the spread and the virus dissipates. There are monkey pox mitigations on a as needed basis now such as contact tracing positives and their contacts isolating for 21 days. contacts are being vaccinated. for now this is the correct approach, if they start saying more is needed then i will believe more is needed, if they dont then the measures have been enough.

For those still not understanding through it is NOT an STI. if you get flu from sexual contact with someone who has flu that does not make flu an STI. the current outbreak has been from an event where lots of people were having sex but it is not the sex that has caused the spread it is the close contact.

Is that satire? Nothing light touch going on there currently.

Mygirlruby · 25/05/2022 10:14

This is fear-mongering, OP. Do a bit of research before trying to stir people up, monkeypox is nothing like covid.

Ineedcoffee2021 · 25/05/2022 10:24

dont watch msm and you will be fine OP but it seems like they have you hook, line and sinker

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/05/2022 10:26

Why in earth would you even be thinking of locking down for monkey pox?

it looks horrible but the vastly overwhelming majority make a full recovery. Don’t be daft.

Should we be learning the lessons of covid and following a ‘zero monkey pox’ strategy like China and New Zealand have done with covid to great effect?

Even now China is managing to keep covid cases and deaths low using light touch protections such as limiting mixing.

Surely it’s better to go early and hard rather than possibly needing to impose full lockdown later?

Too far OP, you had me till this. Nice try though.

Eh? What sort of crazy mailing lists have you subscribed to for multiple petitions to be sent to you?

Fecking China is using light touch??? Have you actually read any news lately, millions have been shut in their homes unable to even go out to buy food. Others have been sent to quarantine camps for daring to live on the same building as someone that has tested positive. Children have been forcibly separated from their parents. Pets have been butchered. All in the name of zero covid.

I've reported based on this post.

These people want to cause distress and worry and upset. They need to fuck off.

What use would a mask be when it’s spread by skin to skin contact? Just don’t rub yourself on people and you’ll be fine.

Love it 😂

LampLighter414 · 25/05/2022 11:44

It is simply too unsafe to be out and about in close proximity and physical contact with each other. They need to bring back work from home order and non essential shop closures again. And bring back furlough please.

Did you day light touch and China in one sentence. Got any contacts in Shanghai? I think the residents of that city will be flummoxed that you consider the restrictions they have been under recently as "light touch".

Not easy is it, Keating?
It used to be obvious, but there's been so much stupidity flying round over Covid it's hard to see who really means what now
