Protections needed to stop monkeypox?

With news today that 57 cases of money pox have been discovered in the U.K., should we be putting some protections/mitigations in place to slow the spread and make sure the NHS can cope?

I don’t think lockdown would be appropriate at this stage but should the government be implementing things like mask mandates, social distancing, the rule of 6 and bans on indoor socialising and large events?

Surely we’ve learned from covid that it’s important to act early to prevent the need for more restrictions later?

It may not be life-threatening but the lesions will leave significant scarring on the face

can you point me to your source please? I’ve had a google and can’t find anything saying “may” cause scarring, and similar to chicken pox.

I hapve a chickenpox scar on my face.

Tictocrobot · 24/05/2022 17:56

I’d imagine that could be true. Smallpox left bad marks and scars when it was a thing. And I have two chicken pox scars that I know about, 30 years later.

This a STD. I seriously worry for the population who are so gullible to this press hysteria and don’t bother reading up on it.
The dumbing down of the masses here we come.

It's not an STD.

If that was the case why does a child have it?

SlowHorses · 24/05/2022 18:14

It’s not “here we come” - evidently by the OP it’s here already. God help us (and not from MonkeyPox).

The only measure I would recommend is turning off your television and stop listening to the news

BR1967 · 24/05/2022 19:38

News in my country USA stated that Small Pox Vaccine is effective for this disease and it transmits through very close personal contact. It is not transmit by airborne droplets.

I agree. And turn off apple news alerts because daily coronavirus numbers have been replaced with increased daily monkeypox infection alerts 🙄

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 24/05/2022 19:48

We've got a large notice on our front door,

A mask must be worn by all monkeys before entering.

So far it seems to have worked. Phew!

This is a joke surely? You do realise it’s basically a STD don’t you?

Is that true - ie it’s an STD?

sugaryouth20 · 24/05/2022 19:55

I can only speak from my experience..
I had just given birth when COVID hit the news and was looking after our baby alone during the first lockdown. What the media won’t feed you are stories like mine and much worse the world over, where the isolation and worry that I was parenting my first child okay, with no one around to shoulder that (DH had no paternity leave and had to work all through it as front line worker) made me mentally rather poorly and developed PND. On top of that, I had nothing to do also but sit in the house, surrounded by the media on the TV bleating the COVID narrative so when baby was only a few weeks old, the media portrayal had me convinced our child was essentially going to get this and it was so serious if we got it, we were all done for.
Tip - turning off the TV and letting my mind work for itself again was a big help..

I now can’t remember some bits of my child’s younger days and nearly ended up separating from their dad due to the strain of being so ill, absolutely 100% fuelled by lockdown.

My heart breaks at the thought of ever having to go back there and how, despite everything those in charge have put us through, people still support these ridiculous ideas and now see it as a standard response to anything. We’ve all lost bits or all of our lives for 2 years and I certainly won’t be allowing someone to do that to me again.

Gingernaut · 24/05/2022 19:59

Monkeypox requires close contact with an infected person - it's transmitted like chickenpox.

The 'Rona is airborne and much more of an infection risk.

The biggest superspreader events were a Gay Pride festival in the Canary Islands and a fetish festival in Belgium.

A large portion of sufferers are "men who have sex with men"

Not an STD, no. Just close contact generally.

TennisMum75 · 24/05/2022 20:20

Your best course of action would be to turn off scare-mongering main stream media and live your life. You can bet your bottom dollar that MPs and the elite aren’t stewing over it. 🐒

GettingItOutThere · 24/05/2022 20:24

just off to stock up on toilet roll.

bluesapphire48 · 24/05/2022 20:26

It's not spread the way covid is spread, so it should not be as easy to catch. If you've been vaccinated against smallpox, you probably won't get as severe a case, as the two viruses are related.

the80sweregreat · 24/05/2022 20:30

Some of the ones in charge of us all didn't get into a lather over coronavirus and had parties and gatherings when it was meant to be a full lockdown.
If they want me to become anxious over Monkey pox then they will be disappointed. I've learnt my lesson there!

Tor2022 · 24/05/2022 20:36

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2022/05/20/monkeypox-outbreak-doubles-health-authorities-set-announce-11/

This article is really reassuring @Like . They already have plans to stop the spread. They have vaccines available and it's spread differently to COVID and is occurring more often in places where there is lots of skin to skin contact with different people. You'd think that if they were really concerned that they would temporarily close venues where there was lots of skin to skin contact (eg. Adult sauna's), but they're not, so I'm not worried. I don't think that we need any other precautions.

User3456 · 24/05/2022 20:47

UKHSA have monkey pox listed as airborne. Close contact obviously spreads it too. Not saying it's as infectious as covid through the air - but regardless it's worth popping mask on on the bus or in the shops. Won't hurt and reduces covid risk too.

Numbers are currently very low and if government act quickly we should be able to stamp this out with isolation of close contacts and ring vaccination. Government do need to act quickly though - we need financial support for isolation and decent contact tracing in place. It would be very cost effective to stamp it out now.

Of course Boris is far too distracted with partygate allegations and trying to save his skin to actually do his job properly.

I worry what will happen if we don't get it eliminated quickly and especially if it gets into schools. Government are incompetent and people don't want to comply with public health measures any more. Eurgh.

Jesus. Given the state of the country after the disastrous experiments of the past 2years, I don’t know how anyone in their right mind could even think about further restrictions.

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 24/05/2022 20:49

BrightYellowDaffodil · 23/05/2022 21:37

It would if you'd followed the Covid Safe Sex guidance…Face away from each other, minimise contact and breathing. Masks.

Don't forget to limit the number of participants to six or fewer Grin

And to do it outdoors!!
