Protections needed to stop monkeypox?

With news today that 57 cases of money pox have been discovered in the U.K., should we be putting some protections/mitigations in place to slow the spread and make sure the NHS can cope?

I don’t think lockdown would be appropriate at this stage but should the government be implementing things like mask mandates, social distancing, the rule of 6 and bans on indoor socialising and large events?

Surely we’ve learned from covid that it’s important to act early to prevent the need for more restrictions later?

I assure that there's no need for lockdown etc, but I thought the mortality rate of monkeypox is about 10% - so anything but mild

Unanananana · 23/05/2022 20:11

Oh, here they come, the lockdown lovers!

Have you heard of chicken pox? Measles? The flu? Pretty sure they put more people in hospital than this mild illness.

XenoBitch · 23/05/2022 20:11

Easy. Stop looking at the news and social media.

Caspianberg · 23/05/2022 20:11

It’s not a sexual disease though is it? It can be spread by droplets through coughing and sneezing the same as covid.

cdc says
‘The virus enters the body through broken skin (even if not visible), respiratory tract, or the mucous membranes (eyes, nose, or mouth). Human-to-human transmission is thought to occur primarily through large respiratory droplets. Respiratory droplets generally cannot travel more than a few feet, so prolonged face-to-face contact is required.’

FictionalCharacter · 23/05/2022 20:11

No, we don’t need those measures. It’s nothing like Covid. It’s spread by close physical contact and virologists say that widespread transmission is unlikely.

Grumpybutfunny · 23/05/2022 20:12

Nope offer the small pox vaccine and get on with it. Chicken pox is also doing the rounds, 1:100 death rate in Africa including from bacterial infections of the wounds for which we have antibiotics. Would rather have the vaccine than get spotty (happy to pay) but not that interested in monkey pox

artisanbread · 23/05/2022 20:12

It would be helpful if the government put out some public health information about how it is spread, what symptoms to look out for, rather than people only reading things in the media.

RaspberryChouxBuns · 23/05/2022 20:13

I'm stockpiling pasta already OP.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 23/05/2022 20:14

Nah, there's a Jubilee weekend to do first. We could have 34% of the population with the infection and they'd still wait until afterwards. Probably a couple of big races on the calendar as well. Herd immunity, you know.

ChrisReasBathEggs · 23/05/2022 20:15

Time to disinfect your shopping OP

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 23/05/2022 20:15

Noooo! I was lucky. I loved lockdown. I was fortunate enough to wfh, had my kids at home whilst DP home schooled them. Loved it!
However, right now I am sitting next to my 6 year old who cannot physically take any further changes. I now hold her hand as she goes to sleep. My once confident little girl is suffering so much! The straw that broke the camels back was a swap in class teacher due to circumstances.

Monkey pox is nowhere near as dangerous as the mental health effects lockdown has.

Lockdown has cost lives! My eldest DDs dad for one.

We don't lockdown when chicken pox season comes about.

Covid was new. Monkey pox has been around a while. It doesn't look nice in the slightest, but the death rate is low.

There is nobody on this planet who is going to tell me not to see/hug my mum ever again.
It may have even come about because of lockdown! Our immunities are shot to pieces!

Lockheart · 23/05/2022 20:16

OP: "I don't think lockdowns would be appropriate"

Posters: "No lockdowns! Fuck off! Lockdown lovers!!"

The reading comprehension is appalling.

ChrisReasBathEggs · 23/05/2022 20:16

Nice distraction from partygate and the economy tanking though isn't it?

Lex345 · 23/05/2022 20:16

This is a completely different kettle of fish to COVID. Coronavirus was novel. We had no natural immunity, no treatments and no vaccine. Disease potentially very serious and specifically needing respiratory support in a significant proportion of cases-resources we did not have if it was allowed to spread unrestricted.

From what I can gather, monkeypox belongs to the same family as small pox, for which there is a highly effective vaccine. The disease is usually mild, but the mortality rate is between 3 and 6%. I am making an assumption this is skewed upwards as it usually occurs in poorer nations with limited access to healthcare/additional complications of malnutrition, but could be wrong. The WHO has a recommended anti viral therapy indicated. It is unlikely, in comparison, to cause too much undue stress to the NHS. That being said, I appreciate the NHS is struggling for all kinds of different reasons.

ClaudineClare · 23/05/2022 20:17

Yes. Lockdown right now. Masks, social distancing and an immediate ban on monkey nuts.

mumda · 23/05/2022 20:18

QueenOfThorns · 23/05/2022 20:01

What use would a mask be when it’s spread by skin to skin contact? Just don’t rub yourself on people and you’ll be fine.

Don't lick people either. Worked for COVID.

Reallyreallyborednow · 23/05/2022 20:18

Lol no. It’s a known virus, been around for years.

same as if there was a small pox outbreak, not a good thing, but more “shit, where did we put the vaccine again, anyone remember how we treat this” than another pandemic.

GirlCrushxxx · 23/05/2022 20:19

Where's the op??

I’m all for lockdowns- we’ll start with the care homes and pubs and garden centres—- children sacrificed for the older generation with covid, I think it’s time for some in return!

Nice attempt at being goady.

I bet it's deliberate, yes.

Idiotic anyway.
