Protections needed to stop monkeypox?

With news today that 57 cases of money pox have been discovered in the U.K., should we be putting some protections/mitigations in place to slow the spread and make sure the NHS can cope?

I don’t think lockdown would be appropriate at this stage but should the government be implementing things like mask mandates, social distancing, the rule of 6 and bans on indoor socialising and large events?

Surely we’ve learned from covid that it’s important to act early to prevent the need for more restrictions later?

Your best course of action would be to turn off scare-mongering main stream media and live your life. You can bet your bottom dollar that MPs and the elite aren’t stewing over it. 🐒

This is the way.
Many are on high alert due to Covid, and will be hyper focussing on the Monkeypox stuff too.

My inlaws are coming round on Saturday so I'm very much in favour of a highly localised and short-term lockdown... 😕

FloorWipes · 24/05/2022 21:05

OP should be ashamed of this wind up.

SlowHorses · 24/05/2022 21:05

@sugaryouth20

Sorry to read that and hope you’re in a better place now 😊

I'm covering myself in polythene and making a shelter out of all my interior doors where I've stockpiled tinned goods and a wind up radio.
My delivery of loo roll from various supermarkets is en route.
Is there anything else I should be doing?

Flamethrower. Should be on every apocalypse shopping list. Just because.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 24/05/2022 21:21

we didn’t manage to get a single whole house isolation throughout the last 2 and a bit years and the most I had off work was a single day waiting for Dc’s PCR result.

Bring on a 3 week isolation I say! 🤣

sugaryouth20 · 24/05/2022 21:23

@slowhorses Thank you, things are very much better 😊

clumperoo · 24/05/2022 21:32

Huh? I thought it was sexually transmitted?

clumperoo · 24/05/2022 21:32

Huh? I thought it was sexually transmitted?

No. It's transmitted through close contact, e.g. skin to skin. So sex is just an easy way for it to spread.

I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.

Should we be learning the lessons of covid and following a ‘zero monkey pox’ strategy like China and New Zealand have done with covid to great effect?

Even now China is managing to keep covid cases and deaths low using light touch protections such as limiting mixing.

Surely it’s better to go early and hard rather than possibly needing to impose full lockdown later?

I’ve just read absolutely brilliant facebook comments where mainly US posters are arguing that small pox still exists in the wild, it’s only eradicated in the USA.

they’re asking for evidence and insisting there’s about 1000 cases a year worldwide, and is fairly common in the 3rd world.

some are military and saying it has to be true as the US military are vaccinated on deployment.

best part is the comments are on one of those ER clips that are sped up to chipmunk proportions. Carter thinks his patients have small pox- i think it turns out to be monkey pox in the end?

Despinetta · 24/05/2022 22:09

I’m taking the precaution of not shagging anyone with monkeypox, that’ll do me.

It is not a sexually transmitted disease

Didn’t say it was. It’s mainly spreading through sexual contact though.

No. There you go.

GreenWheat · 24/05/2022 22:25

Oh dear, Covid seems to have addled some people's brains.....

Wishfulthinking1977 · 24/05/2022 22:32

If you believe that China's approach to controlling covid is actually using 'light measures' I suggest you read some of the first hand accounts coming out of Shanghai!!

TheKeatingFive · 24/05/2022 22:33

I'm fairly certain that post was tongue in cheek.

Well, I hope so anyway.

SlowHorses · 24/05/2022 22:36

Did I just read the words “China” and “light touch” in the same sentence when describing their response to COVID?

[Rubs eyes and reads that again to check]

ok, now I can sleep tonight knowing this is a definite windup 😂

It would be way more practical if we discussed the right course of action and emergency rations needed for an alien invasion type scenario.

Mirw · 24/05/2022 22:42

If you are not a gay man or sleeping with a gay man, you will probably be okay. That is your protection!

1000N · 24/05/2022 22:50

🤣🤦🏼‍♀️ NO!
What would a face mask do on a disease that transmits via:
touching clothing, bedding or towels used by someone with the monkeypox rash
touching monkeypox skin blisters or scabs
Sexual intercourse

???

Spudburger · 24/05/2022 22:57

It's airborne with up to 21 day incubation period. Not an STD. Lockdown no, however masks sensible to keep numbers low until we know more.

USA made a huge order for an effective vaccine last week.
