£10 for 6 supermarket eggs!

We're on holiday in Norfolk, and needed some eggs. Stopped at a Shell garage for petrol and asked DH to nip into the Little Waitrose attached for a box of 6. He came out looking shell-shocked, having just spent £10 on a box of crappy supermarket quality eggs! Not lovely local eggs which I might have understood, but 6 of those bog standard Happy Egg Co ones! The idiot didn't get a receipt or I'd be fuming on the Waitrose twitter feed.

He also spent £4 on 2 pints of waitrose semi skim milk.

Is this normal for a Little Waitrose? It wasn't a motorway services, just a local Shell garage. Or has the cost of living crisis hit Norfolk particularly hard????

Ostrich eggs maybe worth that amount

Lonelycrab · 12/05/2022 17:07

Maybe he bought something else with it and didn’t tell you.

Like a bottle of whisk-ey

HFG37 · 12/05/2022 17:07

To get that so wrong, your DH is clearly not much of a mathemachicken.

KatherineJaneway · 12/05/2022 17:09

He probably added some cigarettes or wine to the basket and hid the evidence.

Lonelycrab · 12/05/2022 17:12

I mean, £10 is hardly a poultry amount of money is it?

MissChanandlerBong80 · 12/05/2022 17:16

There’s been some fowl play.

Yes, DH's feathers sound ruffled from that transaction.

No wonder his brains were scrambled and he now feels in need of coddling or the support of some soldiers.

Anjo2011 · 12/05/2022 17:38

He has either made an error or been massively mugged off. Either way is not a great outcome if he paid £10 for eggs.

Lonelycrab · 12/05/2022 17:38

Yeah go easy on your husband. He may have realised his mistake and be feeling a bit appre-hen-sive.

RachelGreeneGreep · 12/05/2022 17:40

So he queried it and someone working in the shop insisted that those were the correct prices?

I would have replaced them back on the shelf, and said I couldn't afford them at that price - which would be true.

HTH1 · 12/05/2022 17:41

Shame he didn’t get a receipt as that would also have shown the beers DH bought…

He bought some chocolate for himself. And then scoffed the evidence because he didn't share...? 🤣🙈

This wins 😆

The puns almost make this whole fiasco worth it.

£10. Holy chicken shit!

nocoolnamesleft · 12/05/2022 17:54

No way. Clutching my pearls over this one.

My cherry tomatoes scanned up at £235 once...fortunatley I noticed before paying 😂

£46 for an avocado at Aldi once, I think the cashier typed it in manually. He blamed the till though.

if I hadn’t only bout a few things I may not have noticed.

HaveringWavering · 12/05/2022 17:58

How did he query it but not get a receipt? Surely checking the receipt is part of the “querying it” process?

I think it got rung through multiple times. Aaaargh.

That was very unclucky

Hello @ArtichokeAardvark

I work at Waitrose and know a bit about the petrol station side

Not everything in a Shell /Little Waitrose petrol station is supplied by Waitrose.

Happy Eggs are not even stocked at Waitrose so they must get those from a wholesaler.

There is a price premium ,usually at all small format retailers / petrol stations e.g. Tesco Express, M&S, Sainsburys, Waitrose. Can't remember who sets the prices though, the retailer or the petrol station, pretty sure it's the petrol station.
