£10 for 6 supermarket eggs!

We're on holiday in Norfolk, and needed some eggs. Stopped at a Shell garage for petrol and asked DH to nip into the Little Waitrose attached for a box of 6. He came out looking shell-shocked, having just spent £10 on a box of crappy supermarket quality eggs! Not lovely local eggs which I might have understood, but 6 of those bog standard Happy Egg Co ones! The idiot didn't get a receipt or I'd be fuming on the Waitrose twitter feed.

He also spent £4 on 2 pints of waitrose semi skim milk.

Is this normal for a Little Waitrose? It wasn't a motorway services, just a local Shell garage. Or has the cost of living crisis hit Norfolk particularly hard????

I can't believe he didn't question that at the till, why did he not ask them to check?

Daisy95 · 12/05/2022 15:35

No not normal I live in Norfolk and often pop in the little Waitrose on the way home from work their prices are no where near that! sorry I think it's gone through incorrectly, I can't believe he paid that without even questioning it..

savoycabbage · 12/05/2022 15:36

When are you next going @Daisy95? 👀

tillytoodles1 · 12/05/2022 15:37

Did he only give them £10, not £20 ?

MRex · 12/05/2022 15:42

Should be safely under £4. Either the checkout person made a mistake, or they ripped him off for £10, or he paid £10 of someone's petrol. Any which way the man is cracked paying that much, why on earth didn't he ask?

MyneighbourisTotoro · 12/05/2022 15:47

Why did he buy them? I don’t understand why anyone would willingly pay that much, especially without questioning it? just leave them on the shelf!

Fere · 12/05/2022 15:49

if you he paid by card you can enquire with Waitrose about this transaction

sonsmum · 12/05/2022 15:51

As he didn't get a receipt, I think you need to probe whether he spent the money on something else, and the milk/eggs were not that price, meaning he is hiding something from you.
If you're still nearby, why not go back to the garage and investigate for yourself.

BarbaraofSeville · 12/05/2022 15:53

Yes, that's a good point @Fere. If you go to Waitrose with the date, time and place of the transaction they could well look through their system and find the exact list of goods that was bought.

I was surprised it was that detailed, I once had an issue with Morrisons and some gift cards that weren't activated but when I went back with only my credit card statement, they could pull up the list of what I'd bought and see that I'd paid for them and the £xx I'd spent wasn't just random groceries.

YousirNames · 12/05/2022 15:54

That can't be right, the till / cashier must have fucked up

I regularly buy eggs and milk in Waitrose as its the only shop within walking distance and it definitely isnt anywhere near that much

Jaxhog · 12/05/2022 15:56

Not even large Burford browns are that much! Looks like he got ripped off.

BlanketsBanned · 12/05/2022 16:00

They have 6 essential eggs for £1 so the cashier probably got it wrong, they tried to charge me £47 instead of 47p for a lettuce once just ring their customer services for a refund, they dont quibble.

Glitterbiscuits · 12/05/2022 16:01

Have you got the receipt to check that something else didn't go through the till in error?

AnotherTroyforHertoBurn · 12/05/2022 16:06

Clucking hell. 🥚🐥

Justmuddlingalong · 12/05/2022 16:08

Or better still, get DH to deal with it. He'll maybe be a bit more aware in future if he's to sort out his own mistakes.

UniversalAunt · 12/05/2022 16:08

Price check today: Burford Browns in local Waitrose selling at £3.50.
Minded to check after recent MN post about price of eggs.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 12/05/2022 16:09

Just been to Waitrose in Marylebone to check egg prices, so invested am I in this thread (not really, had a bit of shopping to do too). £1.68 for 6 free-range Waitrose eggs. They don't stock the Happy Egg Co ones. Their most expensive eggs were only £3.10 (possibly for 12)

IcedOatLatte · 12/05/2022 16:09

That really, really doesn't sound right. Can you link the actual shop and I'm sure some one will be able to check for you

On a side note what possessed him to pay that? Is there a reason he would have done something which on the face of it is insane, why didn't you go back and query it?

Franklin12 · 12/05/2022 16:10

Love the yokes btw!

Honestly I am not picking on men but what is it with a lot of them. A friend got her DH to organise an ESTA for the USA and he used one of those third party sites and paid 3 times as much as he should have. He also brought parking at the airport for double the price he should have. He really did have no idea of the cost of things!

ImAvingOops · 12/05/2022 16:12

You'd have to be a complete numpty to pay that and not query it! What was he thinking?

Bootothegoose · 12/05/2022 16:12

There’s been a mistake there. Why on Earth did he pay that or not query it?!

cate16 · 12/05/2022 16:13

My cherry tomatoes scanned up at £235 once...fortunatley I noticed before paying 😂

ToastedWaffle · 12/05/2022 16:13

Was he too chicken to query it at the time?

Mymindisnotmyown · 12/05/2022 16:13

Can’t believe your DH didn’t question this. LTB

TooBigForMyBoots · 12/05/2022 16:17

Any Mnetters local to the area who could pop ova to LW and check?
