£10 for 6 supermarket eggs!

We're on holiday in Norfolk, and needed some eggs. Stopped at a Shell garage for petrol and asked DH to nip into the Little Waitrose attached for a box of 6. He came out looking shell-shocked, having just spent £10 on a box of crappy supermarket quality eggs! Not lovely local eggs which I might have understood, but 6 of those bog standard Happy Egg Co ones! The idiot didn't get a receipt or I'd be fuming on the Waitrose twitter feed.

He also spent £4 on 2 pints of waitrose semi skim milk.

Is this normal for a Little Waitrose? It wasn't a motorway services, just a local Shell garage. Or has the cost of living crisis hit Norfolk particularly hard????

they were 20p in morrisons (free range) provided you could construct the little cardboard boxes to put them in. After 5 minutes of attempting origami with these DIY planet friendly boxes, I gave up and paid normal price for a normal box.

wentworthinmate · 13/05/2022 20:36

And your DH didn’t query it??? At what price would he have decided to say something I wonder? You must live in London normally.

Lonelycrab · 13/05/2022 20:42

Confused. yesterday it seemed that MNHQ closed this thread for 'breaking talk guidelines' yet now it's up and running

Yes I sometimes think mnhq could be Kinder.

myquicheisbetterthanyourquiche · 13/05/2022 20:45

OP, for that price, he evidently had it off with a prostitute in Little Waitrose and is pretending it was eggs.

Get your ducks in a row, photograph all your bank statements and LTB.

Parentsofaprincess · 13/05/2022 20:50

Got to say your DH is a complete donut. What planet does he live on?

That is eggspensive

🤭

JudgeJ · 13/05/2022 21:04

Fakenham?
Pleanty of roadside eggs in Norfolk, never been on short supply, I pay £1.60 for a dozen lovely eggs, never understand why people drive by and go to supermarkets (or garages in this case).

AKAanothername · 13/05/2022 21:14

I've just bought 6 large Burford Browns for £3.10 in a big Waitrose, I've also just paid £2.70 for ONE, yes ONE Jack Hawkins tomato.

To be fair, the tomato was lovely, served with red onion, capers, thinly sliced Manchego and a delicious dressing (DH made it, so I don't know the ingredients).

But, there is no way I would be paying £10 for eggs and milk and I'm a soft touch (see above for the cost of one giant tomato).

KermitlovesKeyLimePie · 13/05/2022 21:17

Were they Faberge?

Or he's lying and didn't want to admit to the scratch cards.

And that's also why he binned the receipt....

SiobhanSharpe · 13/05/2022 21:43

Large Burford Browns are two half-dozen cartons for a fiver at our Waitrose this week. Bargain!

mrbreezeet1 · 13/05/2022 22:17

OMG 😱 😱

''Happy Egg Company'' are not ''bog standard eggs'' at all! I have seen their farms for myself. As well as being free range, they have loads of enrichment for the hens, which are busy and clever animals. You are really out of order for this post - naming that company for no good reason. Your post is in bad faith. 😠

Good plan. It is quite confusing getting those eggs through the self service till.

Because I forgot I'd bought 12 eggs and not 2 boxes when it asked how many I had.

Then I also had to explain it to DP the next time we bought some. Because he thought we'd bought 2 boxes...

Plus if all the eggs you picked are bigger than average it fails the weight test and accuses you of stealing something.

This is so funny, op said nothing bad about the company at all! 'bog standard' just means normal. And it's not like Happy Egg Company are offering burford browns, they are just pretty normal eggs with a good welfare standard!

wtf 😂

YouHaventDoneAnyWork · 14/05/2022 06:27

This thread was funny already but hearing how the Happy Egg Company has extra curricula for its hens has made me chuckle!! ‘Busy and clever animals’. They’re not just scratching around sat on their arses all day you know! 😂

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 14/05/2022 09:04

ONE, yes ONE Jack Hawkins tomato.

You're making me feel better about the money I spend on IoW tomato boxes.

And now I really want to try a Jack Hawkins tomato.

BarbaraofSeville · 14/05/2022 09:43

Being a pleb with no idea what a Jack Hawkins tomato is, I have now googled and found that it appears to be a large tomato exclusive to Waitrose that they suggest is 'suitable for slicing and stuffing'.

The reviews are quite funny and not everyone who's bought one thinks it was worth the money.

They're £5.50 a kilo and I also didn't know if that's a lot or not for tomatoes - we buy the 'nice' cherry tomatoes that cost about £2 for a pack.

On investigating further I have learned that it is cheaper per kilo to buy one massive posh tomato, that many people are not that impressed with, than a pack of aforementioned nice cherry tomatoes at around £8/kilo.

Total range of tomato/kilo prices in Waitrose appears to range from £1.80 to £16.67, the latter obviously being those bred for taste rather than looking nice on the supermarket shelf.

I got free burford brown eggs today. Given their popularity on this thread, I thought I'd ask - what's the best thing to do with them?

Goldijobsandthe3bears · 14/05/2022 12:25

Is your husband a little thick 😂

We find eating them works quite well.
