Asking someone to move seats on a flight? Aibu ?

Last week I was travelling to Gran Canaria with TUI.
I had booked mine and boyfriends seats when we booked and paid £22 for both.
I had the window and he had the middle.

A lady sat on the end and her daughter was in front.
She asked could they have our two seats and we have hers /daughters or my boyfriend switch with her daughter.
I politely said no.
Which she wasn't happy about.
We got "what difference does it make"
"Your adults,my daughter is sacred of flying and is a minor"

Anyway we wouldn't move.

Was I in the wrong ?
Surely if she was that bothered she could have paid like us.

She wasn’t unreasonable to ask and you weren’t unreasonable to say no

I disagree when the op has paid for something and the other person didn’t. Imagine going to a theme park where someone in the queue asks to swap with someone who paid for a fast track pass, for whatever reason, they are tired, legs hurt. It would be cheeky to ask if you had the opportunity to purchase the seat you want but chose not to.

if the seats are random then fair enough.

Tbh, the equivalent is demanding that someone else on the plane to give you the coffee they just bought because you have decided that you deserve or need it more than them. They can just have the small cup of water the airline is giving out for free instead. You, after all, are more thirsty so you should get the coffee even though you weren’t willing to pay for it.

Well the coffee is probably cheaper than a seat reservation and involves less chaos than having to swap seats with a cheap entitled stranger last minute, so logically they'd be more reasonable to swipe the coffee! They are so exhausted with the stress of taking your seat, they need your coffee to perk back up.

See I still don't think it's fair when it's randomly allocated (leaving aside the fact there is no way for someone eyeing up better seats to tell). I didn't book seats recently and was rather pleased I was allocated a window seat next to DH. I wouldn't have wanted to move (unless they were offering me better seats than mine). A downgrade, even without a financial penalty, for the benefit of strangers who are too tight or disorganised to sort their own seating arrangements out if it's important to them isn't something that I'm willing to accommodate.

MadameFantabulosa · 21/04/2022 20:03

It’s always the women (and particularly the over 49s), especially if they are travelling on their own, who get asked a) to move seats b) to check in their hand luggage c) to take the shitty end of the stick generally. It’s because we’re seen as compliant and unlikely to kick off, unlike the tattooed bloke with a shaven head.

ExMachinaDeus · 21/04/2022 20:10

Yes @MadameFantabulosa but it can work the other way I got upgraded for free to Business class once on a British Airways flight to NYC. I think because there was a big sporting event in New York and lots of fans traveling who’d been drinking since 8am. They’d overbooked and a mild mannered non-drunk non- football fan woman was the safer bet to upgrade.

NurseBernard · 21/04/2022 20:10

I would have thought that peri-menopausal + aged women would be the least likely to be compliant.

I am certainly enjoying entering that phase of life.

Sure, you were within your rights. But you had a wonderful and rare opportunity to show kindness through sacrifice, which is the greatest kindness. And you blew it.

Fucking hell. I'm pretty sure Jesus himself would say that's laying it on a bit thick Grin

It's like The Cats Meow and joy of a child all over again.

And the child's mother had the wonderful and rare option to show kindness to her child though (financial) sacrifice (the greatest kind apparently) and she blew it.

I like the cut of your jib! 😂😂

Mooshering · 21/04/2022 21:18

Why on earth are strangers more accountable for other people’s children than the children's parents are? The logic employed to make other people responsible for parents choosing things that aren’t in their child’s interests is astounding sometimes.

This is absolutely bang on.

Mooshering · 21/04/2022 21:31

I always book an aisle seat.

Anyone asking me to move gets a speech about my IBS and bladder problems. I also have a toilet urgency card that I show them.

I was asked to switch from a wing aisle seat to the middle of a 5 row on the way to America so a parent could sit with their 15 year old. Nope!

Shitandhills · 21/04/2022 21:42

@rainbowmilk oh, I wouldn't have switched either in that case! Interested that the person on the other side of the mum also wouldn't switch with the little kid...? Would have thought an aisle seat next to 1 person would trump an inner seat in block of 4...

Agree. I don’t think logic was strong with her, honestly.

Shitandhills · 21/04/2022 22:04

@rainbowmilk did she even ask the other person?

rainbowmilk · 21/04/2022 22:10

@Shitandhills No idea, I put headphones in after she called me a bitch!

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

this is just victim blaming frankly.

be kind to those trying to extort you. Otherwise you are morally deficient. 🙄

@wearejustfriends

Also I told her I had paid for seats. Her response was "what difference does it make"
Answer That we get to sit together, good day to you.

I am getting more and more annoyed thinking about this thread than anything else. Maybe it is my age and my peri menopausal state but I have already had an argument with a stranger I may never meet in my head because myself and my boyfriend are going away next week on our first holiday together and I cannot wait to snuggle up beside him on the plane and in my head the person next to us has asked me to move and caused a stink and I already have an argument prepared in my head!!!!!

goes forth to seek some semblance of a life

Cheeky entitled bastards honestly.

BeerLoas · 22/04/2022 10:01

@StaceysmomandIhavegotitgoinon

Made me chuckle. This thread could be changing history!

I suspect if asked this summer most people will be unleashing such a tirade of truths neither they, nor anyone else or the plane will try this shit again.

StaceysmomandIhavegotitgoinon · 22/04/2022 10:05

I think now if I DONT have a cf asking me to move I will be as pissed off as I would be if they DID ask me at this point lol
