AIBU to think that a £400 fine for excessive use of a whip by a jockey is not enough. In this case, the jockey was the winner and received £560000. I think he should lose his place to the second finisher, and still pay the £400 fine, otherwise it isn't fair on the other jockeys in the face.

The final word was supposed to be "race" of course, not "face".

I think the race itself should be banned. Too many horses are injured every year.
The whole industry is awful but the Grand National is particularly bad.

But I agree with the majority, this is barbaric abuse, not sport.

The winning jockey is an amateur so doesn’t get any prize money or riding fee. The fine of £400 is the maximum the stewards can impose on an amateur because of that.

I don’t really follow horse racing - to upsetting (but that’s by the by). I did watch the grand national yesterday due to circumstances.

Anyway, near the end I said something along the lines of “I hope that one wins because the other one is beating the shit out of his horse”.

It did! But now it transpires that he was excessively whipping his horse too? This whole thing is shit.
Then again, I don’t claim to have any knowledge on horses or their racing.

Though I do sometimes wonder if there was a law that said they have to put the jockey down too when they put the horse down whether the vets would try a little harder.

I was looking at the jockey who came second using the whip, and there was no way he could have caught up. It was excessive.
They should ban whips.

Watching it puts money into the vile sport. I don't do that. Bad enough I live in a town with a racecourse where we are expected to come second place to the racing community as we "need" their money.

@LeggyLinda, on what basis do you think that vets don't "try" when treating horses? Do you have any experience of equine vets?
