Jamie Wallis, The Conservative MP for Bridgend has come out as Britain's first Trans MP, having been diagnosed with Gender Dysphoria.

This is really big news on its own. However Jamie's statement contained lots of other things as well. He was being blackmailed, his blackmailer is in prison. He recently suffered rape.Sad He has PTSD from the rape which caused him to leave the scene of an accident last year, where he crashed his car.

AIBU to feel a bit discombobulated at Jamie Wallis' statement?Confused There is so much information.ConfusedConfusedConfused

It's a lot going on but I'm not sure why you'd be "discombobulated" unless you knew him personally or his news personally affects you in some way? Is he your MP?

(Before anyone jumps on me, he has said he is continuing to use he/him pronouns for now so I'm not misgendering him)

heldinadream · 30/03/2022 17:15

I'm not sure he's a mature enough human being to bear the undoubted burden of trying to be a good MP.
And I speak as someone whose life has had its fair share of chaotic events, some of them self-induced by my own immaturity. I wouldn't have liked to be trying to be a high-profile responsible person with it all going on. So YANBU.

KatsuKatsu · 30/03/2022 17:17

Why would you be discombobulated? I don't understand. It seemed a simple enough statement to me.

EvilGoldfish · 30/03/2022 17:23

I hope he gets help and support regarding the rape.

I don’t think him wanting to identify as trans (that is how he phrased it) should overshadow the facts that he was involved in a hit and run, that he encouraged young students into prostitution (he co-owned a ‘sugar daddy’ website and that he lied to the press/public about it.

I question his mental capacity to stand as an mp, due to the fact he claims he did not have the mental capacity to commit a hit and run.

cakeorwine · 30/03/2022 17:29

Will be interesting to see the Conservative Party reaction - given current culture wars.

I hope they get support - coming out in the public eye as a trans MP in the UK Parliament is a first. Who knows how people and the media will react.

TooBigForMyBoots · 30/03/2022 17:36

Reasons why I'm discombobulated.

  1. I never thought Britain's first trans MP would be a Conservative from Wales.
  2. I have never read a politician's statement like it.
  3. There is so much in the statement to digest. And
  4. Britain got its first Trans MP today and nobody outside FWR thought it worthy of comment.Shock

@cakeorwine, he says that he has been supported throughout by the Conservative Whip and this afternoon has was commended by both sides of the house for his honesty and bravery.Smile

Re 4) perhaps they just didn't want to invite the inevitable anti-trans comments?

We'll see.

The Conservative Party and the right wing media are currently whipping up anti-trans sentiment in this country. They see it as a potential election winner.

TooBigForMyBoots · 30/03/2022 18:02

PM Johnson told Jamie The House stands with you and will give you the support you need to live freely as yourself today in the Commons, but I suppose you can't trust a word that comes out of his mouth.

Last night Jamie Wallis wasat the dinner where Johnson made a wee joke about AFAB. I wonder if that played any part in him making his statement now?

Are people afraid to talk about this or is everyone just as discombobulated as I am?🤯

I think most people don't really know who he is and it is not really news therefore. Even if you are into politics.

SnowdropsInSpring · 30/03/2022 22:02

How is he actually trans?

Nothing has changed (not even his pronouns) except that instead of scrutinising his prostitution website and his hit and run website, people are fawning over his stunning and braveness.

The alleged rape is a different matter, for which I hope he gets support.

Is he a transwoman? A woman? A man? None? He shows what a farce it can all be.

SnowdropsInSpring · 30/03/2022 22:03

He says he 'wants to be trans'

So he isn’t trans? So he isn’t the first trans mp? Farcical.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 30/03/2022 22:09

I'd feel more sympathy with him if he hadn't previously owned a business selling young people to 'sugar daddies'. (Which he then lied about)
He's a disgusting pimp, but this apparently isn't important to the Tory party.
My sympathy is with the young people who he has lured into the sex industry to line his pockets.

I was really confused when I read about this today - I couldn’t work out if he was male or female.

dapsnotplimsolls · 30/03/2022 22:31

I wonder if he's still making money out of those sugar daddy websites.

Charley50 · 30/03/2022 22:32

It was newsworthy enough to be on channel 4 news tonight (unlike women's rights, ever), with footage of his colleagues remarking on how brave he was. No mention of his unsavoury business practices, or pimping ways.
ginghamstarfish · 30/03/2022 22:35

How is this bloke still an MP anyway?

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 30/03/2022 22:40

How is this bloke still an MP anyway?

Because the idea of having a moral compass is not only wholly irrelevant to being a Tory MP, but is probably actually considered a disadvantage.
