YANBU, after Noel Clarke was accused of sexual assault BAFTA suspended him. I saw on the BBC today he was falsely accused so they'll probably reinstate him. But if one organisation suspends someone on the strength of allegations then Smith should not have been allowed to collect his award for actually assaulting someone.

LaurieFairyCake · 28/03/2022 14:09

He shouldn't have been allowed back on stage after hitting someone

They're both AWFUL though

TinyTortoise · 28/03/2022 14:10

The Academy's statement saying they do not condone violence was pretty hollow considering they subsequently allowed him to remain sat there and then receive a standing ovation for his justification of his actions, all the while stealing the limelight from other worthy winners.

I don't think arrest was necessary (and neither did Chris Rock) but at any other event or if it was a non-famous person you would expect them to be removed after such an incident.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 28/03/2022 14:17

With regards to NC, it did not say he was falsely accused. It said not enough evidence/determined the information would not meet the threshold for a criminal investigation.

grapewines · 28/03/2022 14:18

Agree.

SartresSoul · 28/03/2022 14:20

Noel Clarke wasn’t falsely accused, the CPS didn’t have enough evidence to prosecute which is absolute bollocks but sadly happens all of the time. When something is dropped it does not mean the accused is innocent at all, it just means there’s no solid evidence and it’s one person’s word against another. With NC, multiple peoples words against him but still getting away with it. Crazy.

Chris Rock is a dickhead but there’s never any excuse to assault someone. Will should have been kicked out and arrested.

RegardingMary · 28/03/2022 14:22

Completely agree.

It sets a terrible precedent that 15 minutes after violently attacking someone, he was able to accept an award on the very same stage.

He should have been escorted from the room and not let back in. If they want him to have the award so be it, but don't give him the airtime to deliver an acceptance speech.

It sends such a terrible message.

Towelseverywhere · 28/03/2022 14:26

Absolutely agree op. It doesn’t really matter how offensive the joke was, for WS to hit someone like that in public shows an enormous lack of self control and huge anger issues. He should never have been allowed to stay, never mind get an award and party at the after show event.
It’s disgraceful.

Turningpurple · 28/03/2022 14:26

Its all very strange. CRs 'joke' was awful.

But WS should not have been allowed to stay in the room after that. Never mind stand and give that speech. That was basically 'ohh poor me'

Hoppinggreen · 28/03/2022 14:27

It’s on bloody camera, how has he not been arrested?
Of course I have no idea of the US legal system but I would think someone assaulting another person should lead to an arrest

Mrsjayy · 28/03/2022 14:27

Its all so bad I don't understand why he wasn't arrested if it happened at the Baftas security would have be all over that! Clearly will smiths position in Hollywood overshadows him assaulting somebody for a shit joke !

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 28/03/2022 14:28

But Jarvis Cocker was arrested just for waggling his bum at Michael Jackson at the Brits 🤔

Whatinthelord · 28/03/2022 14:28

I agree. It was bizarre that everyone just ignored it then allowed him to not only collect the award, but give a speech!!!!

I wonder how much more they would have accepted. Where is the boundary?

Mrsjayy · 28/03/2022 14:29

And It took me ages to watch the whole thing its so cringey The my wife speech !

Whitney168 · 28/03/2022 14:31

He should have been escorted from the room and not let back in. If they want him to have the award so be it, but don't give him the airtime to deliver an acceptance speech.

Completely agree with this, no way he should have been allowed up there for his ramblings.

Mrsjayy · 28/03/2022 14:33

Roasting is popular at these ceremonies maybe they should stop doing it.

Onlyforcake · 28/03/2022 14:34

He should have been chucked out by security.

thecatsthecats · 28/03/2022 14:35

If anything, he should have been escorted off and Jada given the option to accept on his behalf.

(When the British act was interrupted at Eurovision they were given the option to repeat their performance, so it's not like events don't have protocols etc - say, if someone fell ill during the evening and couldn't stay to accept.)

Anniefrenchfry · 28/03/2022 14:36

I think some responders have never been close to someone with alopecia and understand the devastation it can cause, calling it out publicly and basically humiliating her was unacceptable as much as he initially laughed then realised and punched him out, and slapping someone is always wrong, honestly, I’d have done it to if someone humiliated soneone I loved publicly due to their alopecia.

CremeEggThief · 28/03/2022 14:38

He didn't behave well, but neither did Chris Rock.

It's Jada I feel sorry for in this. #toxicmasculinity

Mrsjayy · 28/03/2022 14:39

I didn't know JPS had alopecia I honestly thought she had just shaved her head Willow smith also had a shaved the last time I saw herso I was very confused about the whole thing. I bet there will be an awful Facebook watch about this

RegardingMary · 28/03/2022 14:40

I'm also agog at multiple posters half defending him by saying ' CRs joke was awful but...' it's sheer victim blaming.

At no point has it been acceptable to hit someone because you don't like what they've said.

huffyhufferson · 28/03/2022 14:41

I believe the whole thing was a set-up and staged by them.

ForeverLooking · 28/03/2022 14:41

@Mrsjayy

Roasting is popular at these ceremonies maybe they should stop doing it.
Exactly. The Oscars employ comedians to do this kind of comedy year after year. Maybe about time they rethought that really. To be honest, the whole Oscars ceremony needs to be dialled back. The whole sycophantic, narcissistic nonsense from people with more money than sense is outdated and boring. Nobody wants to watch actors get $140,000 goody bags and preach to us all about environmental issues and climate change while they jet around in private jets and buy yet another mansion. Totally out of touch with reality.
LovelyYellowLabrador · 28/03/2022 14:42

Well yes, if Chris rock doesn’t want him arrested then fair enough his call
I suppose
But at the very least he should have been removed

How much better would it have been of will took to that stage and instead of punching him
Explained how painful it is for people that lose their hair

That would have been so powerful
