I agree 100%. It's shocking that he was allowed to sit back down after assaulting someone, let alone then accept his award and receive applause. What a thug.

balalake · 28/03/2022 14:44

I doubt if the organisers of the Oscars were prepared in any way for what happened.

Mrsjayy · 28/03/2022 14:44

I don't think anybody on this thread is defending him Chris Rock joke was awful and disrespectful but he really didn't deserved slapped about the face !

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 28/03/2022 14:45

The way Jada's smile dropped when Rock made his "joke" really made me feel for her. I wish she'd got up there and slapped him herself tbh. Making fun of someone with a medical condition is disgusting.

However, the way WS strode up there so casually and hit him was just bizarre

Femalewoman · 28/03/2022 14:47

He hits someone.

He cries a bit.

He accepts an award.

Violence appears to be tolerated if you are rich and famous.

PollyPutTheKettleOnKettleOn · 28/03/2022 14:47

Yanbu

But the Academy is completely toothless. When Hollywood isn't sure how to react they just ignore it, which is partly why scandals go unchallenged for so long in thar environment.

The police failing to address it is dreadful too - they have the whole scenario on camera, or do they only investigate crimes that the victim gives permission for?

It looks like one rule for them...

If ever they needed Gervais lined up to host next year's, it's now.

IEatChocolateForBreakfast · 28/03/2022 14:47

There have been many reports saying the academy is considering stripping his award off of him. Latest report that just popped us is here apple.news/AKz00okBAT3qMsZ0LLTskiQ

Cornettoninja · 28/03/2022 14:49

The cock strutting and juvenile flag waving following the fall out of this is pathetic.

Chris Rock was a tit to make that joke and has no excuse for it.

Will smith was a twat for not only initially laughing along but then deciding play a billy big bollocks and slap him.

They’re both a pair of ball bags and should be banned from the Oscar’s.

Jada is perfectly capable of defending herself against words using her own words.

RegardingMary · 28/03/2022 14:49

@ForeverLooking

I think the only reason they now do these 'roast' type put downs is to make the entire night a little more palatable to the general public. Nobody wants to be preached to by a celeb with a 140k Goodbag about offsetting their carbon footprint.

Northernlurker · 28/03/2022 14:55

So if the positions were reversed do we think Rock would made a joke specifically and only about Will's hair? And do we think if Jada had seen the look of hurt on the face of her husband as a result do we think she would have steamed in?

I think the answers are no and yes.

Fundamentally this happened because a man in a position of power chose to humiliate a woman. If violence is not ok then why is humiliation ok?

I favour an all are punished approach. Rock got slapped and hopefully will think twice, Smith has had his moment of glory totally screwed up at his own hands. Enough,

ForeverLooking · 28/03/2022 14:55

The Oscars as an organisation surely have some kind of commitment to protect their employees (as CR would have been presumably). Where was the security? Why was WS allowed to assault someone and then carry on as if nothing had happened AND win an award AND accept it on the stage he just attacked somebody on AND attend the after parties?! Outrageous. Hollywood is a cesspit of arse kissing and double standards.

RegardingMary · 28/03/2022 14:55

@huffyhufferson

I doubt it was set up as there was nothing similar to it in rehersals.

There would be absolute fury and uproar if it was found out to be faked/set up. There's been such huge calls for diversity within film and especially the Oscars. The idea they'd get one black man to physically assault another for ratings is horrific.

Exactly. Desperately trying to cling onto the viewers!

@Anniefrenchfry

I think some responders have never been close to someone with alopecia and understand the devastation it can cause, calling it out publicly and basically humiliating her was unacceptable as much as he initially laughed then realised and punched him out, and slapping someone is always wrong, honestly, I’d have done it to if someone humiliated soneone I loved publicly due to their alopecia.
I am sorry, but many of us have relatives with physical disabilities.

Many of us have heard people making comments about those relatives. You don't punch people.

Momicrone · 28/03/2022 14:57

Surely his initial laugh was a nervous awkward laugh?

Mrsjayy · 28/03/2022 14:58

Well that article Is saying Academy members want his Oscar removed so that has to sting, I don't think Chris Rock will be asked back.

Mrsjayy · 28/03/2022 15:00

The laugh was probably his performance laugh and he initially wasn't paying attention.

Laiste · 28/03/2022 15:00

CR made a dig at Jada at the 2016 ceremony as well didn't he?

I imagine WS thinking ... ''He had a pop at Jada last time. We're ok this time he won't do it again ...''.

And then he did! A worse one!

WS should not have been allowed to stick around. But CR deserved it.

I think you don't have a clue about the lives of posters on this thread so that's a massive assumption.

Of course I've overheard people making nasty comments about someone I love. I still don't think it's ok to walk over and punch them in the face though. Ever.

steff13 · 28/03/2022 15:02

@Hoppinggreen

It’s on bloody camera, how has he not been arrested? Of course I have no idea of the US legal system but I would think someone assaulting another person should lead to an arrest
The person who was assaulted has to press charges, which Chris Rock declined to do.
VampireMoney · 28/03/2022 15:02

And Will Smith should've been escorted from the building that instant. The fact that he wasn't almost makes me smell a rat. Which was my first instinct this morning.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 28/03/2022 15:04

@LovelyYellowLabrador

Well yes, if Chris rock doesn’t want him arrested then fair enough his call I suppose But at the very least he should have been removed

How much better would it have been of will took to that stage and instead of punching him
Explained how painful it is for people that lose their hair

That would have been so powerful

I mean yes it would have been more powerful, but in the heat of the moment, seconds after it happens, he probably wasn't thinking "what is the most powerful reaction I could have?". He wasn't thinking full stop which is why he went to such a stupid response.

If he had of just stayed where he was, both he and Jada could have had a few moments to think about it before deciding how to deal with how she felt. Maybe it would have been more powerful for them to just leave and issue a statement after the fact.

The sad fact is, we know alcohol was being consumed by the audience so perhaps by Will Smith too. Emotions were clearly running high since he knew he was up for an award. Do they know ahead of time if they are set to win? If not, nerves would have been high too. I'm not excusing his behaviour at all, but if his natural reaction to being in this sort of situation is violence then he needs to seek help for his issues. He's clearly not okay.

CatNamedEaster · 28/03/2022 15:04

I saw them discussing it on This Morning. They must have shown WS laughing at the joke while his wife looked distraught about a dozen times and not one of them mentioned that he found it funny, while they were doing their whole "violence is awful but we can understand why he did it."

A woman rang up who said her son is being bullied, idolizes WS and is now wondering how on earth she justifies her stance that violence isn't the right response.

He made the choice to go up there after he initially laughed. In front of millions and millions of people. He's as much a fuckwit as CR.

Turningpurple · 28/03/2022 15:04

I genuinely don't know how this works, bit does no one vet the presenters jokes before hand?

I assumed they were. But maybe not. Ne ause I can't understand why no one thought CR was going to far with it.

grapewines · 28/03/2022 15:05

I have to listen to people take the piss and humiliate my daily because of disability. I still don't punch them in the face.
