@MondaysChild7

I don't need my husband to defend me. I'm more than capable of doing it myself.

I also don't condone any type of violence. I certainly wouldn't be impressed if DH decided to defend my honor by assaulting someone without provocation.

I don't want my children raised in a way where they think it's okay to respond with violence.

ForeverLooking · 28/03/2022 15:34

@Cornettoninja

Honesty WS’s behaviour was something I wouldn’t have been surprised to see from Kanye West or Katie Price, both the actual slapping in the middle of a show and the pathetic adrenaline and he clearly displayed afterwards.

He wasn’t making a statement on jada’s behalf he was inflating his own ego with a complete lack of respect for the professional environment he was in.

This...he WASN'T defending Jada, it was all a power play. Look at what a big man I am. Look at ME defending MY women. Look at ME crying. How hard this is for ME. Annoys the fuck out of me. Jada has her own voice. She isn't a timid little mouse, she speaks out, has her own talk show. She doesn't need WS taking over. She rolled her eyes and didn't laugh. I'm sure she would have alluded to it later on in her own time and way. Perfect dignified response ruined by WS making it about him.
Laiste · 28/03/2022 15:37

@girlmom21 that's true.

The immediate aftermath of the slap was used almost as a comedy moment by CR. However when WS was shouting from his seat afterwards, repeatedly telling CR to keep his [WS's] wife's name out of his fucking mouth, CR looked much more shell shocked and unable to twist it into so something funny.

Bluebluemoon · 28/03/2022 15:40

After it happened CR kind of stalled and looked to the side of the stage for a minute as if to say "is he going to be allowed to just go and sit back down??" - I think he was in shock. I thought the way he carried on and tried to lighten the atmosphere again were the mark of a true professional (no matter what you may think of his humour). He handled it extremely well.

Agree the comments deflecting to make it about Jada's "alopecia" and not about someone being assaulted on live TV (and completely getting away with it) are just mind-blowing.

Agree with this. Seems like most people thought it was a joke, it’s only when WS sat down and started that aggressive shouting that people seemed to realise it was real.

@MondaysChild7

I think we now live in a world where men are a bunch of wet blankets who sit by and do nothing to defend their wives because they’re cowardly.
So what you're saying is that if someone insulted my wife or, like in this case. made a hideously tone deaf joke about my wife, I should assault them? And if I don't I'm a coward?

Unbelievable.

Anon778833 · 28/03/2022 15:48

Nobody needs their husband to defend them. But it’s nice to know they’ve got your back.

We now live in a world where men increasingly feel they don’t need to do anything to make the woman they’re with feel important. They don’t bother to even buy a drink for them. Never mind equality, there is no equality for women and if you think there is, you’re naive.

Knittingchamp · 28/03/2022 15:48

He deserved to have his ass kicked for saying what he did about Jada. Someone who loved her kicked his ass, that's all there is too it. He totally deserved it.

Honestly this whole culture or roasting, bullying dresses as jokes, savage mental-health ruining insults on social media, it's got to stop. Everyone who chooses to do that stuff deserves to get their asses kicked. We've sleptwalked into a total bully culture and a few wake up moments like this one aren't necessarily a bad thing.

Shgytfgtf111 · 28/03/2022 15:48

The whole thing looked pretty fake to me

Bluebluemoon · 28/03/2022 15:48

Also, there is a whole narrative about Smith being seen as 'soft'. The whole issue with Jada and Tupac, their supposed open marriage, Jada's affair and their gentle parenting approach, plenty of rappers and those in their community view Smith as a joke. I think he's been dealing with that for a number of years and finally saw an opportunity to defend himself as well

This is very true. This wasn't just out of nowhere - WS was a steaming vessel at boiling point and he flipped. CR was the unfortunate victim of his "Britney" moment.

Lots going on under the surface and in the background here I bet. But it boils down to him not being able to control his temper - pathetic.

Claricestarling1 · 28/03/2022 15:49

Agree..it was disturbing

Pazuzu · 28/03/2022 15:50

The joke was totally tone deaf. If JPS didn't have alopecia it would be a pretty weak joke as it's referencing a nigh on 25 year old film.

However, Will Smith assaulted Chris Rock. Which to some is apparently acceptable.

If a poster said their DH hit someone in a pub or wherever, the thread would be full of people saying LTB due to his lack of control. But because it's a mega star it's absolutely ok to write it off or indeed call all men cowardly for not assaulting others at the drop of a hat.

Smith is lucky that Rock has wound his neck in and kept quiet.

Sunshinedreaming2022 · 28/03/2022 15:51

If someone publicly made fun of my dh or my kids for having a medical condition then I would go up and slap them round the face to. And yes I’m a pacifist.

It wasn’t a punch, or a fight, CR wasn’t “beaten up”, it was just a slap. CR overstepped the mark. WS stuck up for his wife.

We are all cheering on Ukraine for defending their country, well I shall cheer on WS for defending his family.

Bluebluemoon · 28/03/2022 15:51

The whole thing looked pretty fake to me

It really, really wasn't fake. There is footage from an audience member of WS being comforted during the ad break (which they quickly cut to) by denzel 2ashington and Bradley cooper where he is seen crying while they console him (or try to calm him).

The audiences faces behind him were visibly shocked. CR was visibly shocked. WS apologised to "the academy" in his acceptance speech (but not Chris Rock I noticed).

I don't know how anyone can think it was remotely fake.

WhiteJellycat · 28/03/2022 15:53

The bare bones is that if he wasnt wealthy / famous hedge have been escorted out / charged.

Its assault and what ever came before that's not ok.

I'm sure it will be justified because is in a position of power.

girlmom21 · 28/03/2022 15:54

We are all cheering on Ukraine for defending their country, well I shall cheer on WS for defending his family.

And the award for most tone deaf post of the day...

Jesus fucking Christ I cannot believe you've just made that comparison 🤯

VampireMoney · 28/03/2022 15:54

Smith could've walked up on stage, taken the mic off Rock and said apologise to my wife, now. That would've been far more humiliating, having to acknowledge the joke was in bad taste and apologising in front of millions of viewers. That's how you defend your love ones, not making yourself look unhinged on live tv by slapping someone and shouting and swearing.

oldwhyno · 28/03/2022 15:54

I think the Academy hold some responsibility for letting the Oscars degenerate into a Roast purely for attention and to try and stay relevant. It's completely unnecessary to ask people to subject themselves to very public potential humiliation in order to possibly get recognition for your art.

He shouldn't have hit him, he should apologise to him, and he should get the help that he so clearly needs. He has very obvious mental health problems related to a toxic marriage.

Sharrowgirl · 28/03/2022 15:55

We are all cheering on Ukraine for defending their country, well I shall cheer on WS for defending his family.

They’re defending their country against foreign invaders who are shelling schools and hospitals resulting in the deaths of innocent civilians, many of which are children.

Will Smith’s wife had a mean joke made about her.

Bluebluemoon · 28/03/2022 15:56

it was just a slap

Very dangerous and misguided thinking.

Do you not think CR had his "jokes" pre-approved by the academy? He can't just go out there and say any old thing. So he deserves to be hit for reading from autocue?

And jada pinkett is by all accounts an "air your dirty linen in public" kind of person. Bizarre that people are now acting like she is some kind of weak maiden who needs "defending".

I don't believe for one minute that anyone who was involved in the GI Jane "joke" knew she is apparently suffering from alopecia.

Has she actually confirmed she has alopecia or is it just heresay?

RegardingMary · 28/03/2022 16:01

It's not even the first time he's done something like this.

He was arrested for making his bodyguard attack someone days after reviewing a Grammy. The man who was attacked was lucky not to be blinded.

Fairislefandango · 28/03/2022 16:01

I think we now live in a world where men are a bunch of wet blankets who sit by and do nothing to defend their wives because they’re cowardly.

I would hope we now live in a world where a fully-grown woman doesn't need her husband to 'defend her honour' by physically assault someone who makes a rude remark about her. Ffs.

TheOriginalEmu · 28/03/2022 16:03

@Anniefrenchfry

I think some responders have never been close to someone with alopecia and understand the devastation it can cause, calling it out publicly and basically humiliating her was unacceptable as much as he initially laughed then realised and punched him out, and slapping someone is always wrong, honestly, I’d have done it to if someone humiliated soneone I loved publicly due to their alopecia.
Maybe not with alopecia, but we’ve all been close to someone who has a disability or something that jokes are made about. What we don’t do is assault everyone who makes a bad joke or a mean comment about it. I have disabilities, I have 2 kids with ASD, I could write a book of ‘jokes’ made about things that are not funny. I’ve never once decided the way forward is to punch someone in the face. That’s a piss poor excuse.
RegardingMary · 28/03/2022 16:04

@VampireMoney

Can you imagine how amazing that would be. To stand there and calmly say 'my wife is beautiful, strong, amazing, and she suffers from alopecia. You don't get to make fun of that, you don't get to make fun of her. Apologise to her and any other woman you may have inadvertently offended for a cheap laugh.'

It would have been so powerful.
