Can you imagine how amazing that would be. To stand there and calmly say 'my wife is beautiful, strong, amazing, and she suffers from alopecia. You don't get to make fun of that, you don't get to make fun of her. Apologise to her and any other woman you may have inadvertently offended for a cheap laugh.'

It would have been so powerful.[/quote]
Yes. Exactly that. THAT is powerful.

What he did was make it all about him.

Lulu1919 · 28/03/2022 16:08

He shouldn't have been allowed to collect it and should have been escorted from the room.
He could have used words to make his displeasure known ...NOT physical violence.

CailleachGranda · 28/03/2022 16:15

@Sunshinedreaming2022

If someone publicly made fun of my dh or my kids for having a medical condition then I would go up and slap them round the face to. And yes I’m a pacifist.

It wasn’t a punch, or a fight, CR wasn’t “beaten up”, it was just a slap. CR overstepped the mark. WS stuck up for his wife.

We are all cheering on Ukraine for defending their country, well I shall cheer on WS for defending his family.

You're equating Ukraine with Smith assaulting someone

These comments Hmm

Yes, exactly the point I was making about it being all about him.
Him strutting up there like the big man waving his dick around did nothing to defend Jada at all. What point did he make? Look everyone, I can hit someone with no repercussions because I'm IMPORTANT. It hardly taught CR a lesson. He just looked surprised. It was a shit "joke" along the lines of what the Oscars committee wanted so that we all watched.

DidymusAmbrosius · 28/03/2022 16:16

The Academy come out of this whole thing looking awful, imo:

  • they invite Chris Rock to present
  • they have ultimate control over his content and so, presumably OK the joke (having already seen it in rehearsals)
  • they then allow a guest to walk up and hit a presenter for presenting a joke they have already OK'd

Fucking hell, that's shocking.

The joke was shit and cruel, but that doesn't mean Chris Rock should have been hit for it. And it doesn't mean the organiser gets to stand by and wash their hands as if it had nothing at all to do with them.

Mumoblue · 28/03/2022 16:19

Maybe I’m a conspiracy nut but I can’t get too invested because part of me thinks it was planned anyway. Oscar viewership has been declining constantly and now everyone’s talking about it.

00100001 · 28/03/2022 16:22

@huffyhufferson

I believe the whole thing was a set-up and staged by them.
Neither of them are that good of an actor

It could very easily be staged, to be fair. The whole movement towards the slap was very dramatic and like he'd been practicing it in drama school.
00100001 · 28/03/2022 16:25

@Sunshinedreaming2022. Ok, so you won't mind if your husband "just slaps" you and your kids?

drpet49 · 28/03/2022 16:25

Absolutely agree op. It doesn’t really matter how offensive the joke was, for WS to hit someone like that in public shows an enormous lack of self control and huge anger issues. He should never have been allowed to stay, never mind get an award and party at the after show event.
It’s disgraceful.

^This. Will Smith has big anger problems

user1471517095 · 28/03/2022 16:25

I can't believe that some posters think this acceptable. It was almost a sucker punch. What if Chris Rock had fallen over and banged his head. One of my colleagues was killed by one hit!

Heartofglass12345 · 28/03/2022 16:26

It was a shit joke and she looked gutted. But will smith just seems so up himself nowadays, I think the fame has gone to his head

This ^

and this

It sets a terrible precedent that 15 minutes after violently attacking someone, he was able to accept an award on the very same stage.

He should have been escorted from the room and not let back in. If they want him to have the award so be it, but don't give him the airtime to deliver an acceptance speech.

It sends such a terrible message.

KellsBells77 · 28/03/2022 16:32

@Mrsjayy

Roasting is popular at these ceremonies maybe they should stop doing it.
People would stop watching.

Ricky Gervais is the prime reason the Golden Globes have generated any interest over the last decade.

Handing out awards is humdrum nowadays. An awards show needs something more than that.

neverbeenskiing · 28/03/2022 16:34

If they had taken away Will Smith's Oscar the Academy would then have to be accountable for not taking away Harvey Weinstein's, Roman Polanski's, Mel Gibson's, Casey Afleck's, Kevin Spacey's, Sean Penn's...the list goes on and on. As for people saying "why wasn't he arrested?" He wasn't arrested because Chris Rock declined to press charges apparently. As far as I'm concerned Chris Rock's joke was appalling and Will Smith's reaction to it was appalling. Neither of them should be given the oxygen of publicity.

I wouldn't be at all surprised.

Knittingchamp · 28/03/2022 16:37

Sadly Chris Rock isn't the kind of guy to apologise unless forced, hence the reaction. If he was in any way decent he'd never have said it in the first place. But if Will Smith had walked up there and said apologise he'd have laughed in his face.

lindyloo57 · 28/03/2022 16:41

@ForeverLooking well said.

KnowingMeKnowingYouAhaaaa · 28/03/2022 16:41

I was shocked that they allowed him to stay and go up to collect his Oscar. Why wasn't he removed? Can you imagine if he'd hit a woman, or a white male had hit Chris rock, they would have been turfed out immediately I've no doubts. But it seems OK for will smith to do as he pleases? I feel sorry for other winners who have been completely overshadowed by his outburst.

CambsAlways · 28/03/2022 16:52

It was disgusting by both parties but shame to get laughs Rock had to made a joke about wills wife’s alopecia, so not funny

Afterallsbeensaidanddone · 28/03/2022 16:57

It must be pretty awful to see your wife having to face the Oscars probably feeling supersensitive and then being publicly shamed in a joke that will be shared with millions. Yes he responded wrongly but my goodness, he must have been just dying for her.

knittingaddict · 28/03/2022 16:59

@huffyhufferson

I believe the whole thing was a set-up and staged by them.
Think about that for a moment.

No way would Will Smith risk his reputation for a staged confrontation.

I don’t think he was ‘dying’ for her, I think the catalyst was his own shame at laughing along.

….and now he’s highlighted the joke beyond whatever shelf life it would have had and it’s absolutely everywhere with hardly any commentary on her condition apart from the odd line here and there. WS has turned a shit joke into a global spectacle.

BloodyloveGeorge · 28/03/2022 17:00

Agreed, but only a couple of people know the winner so it wouldn't have been practical. They would have had to have someone run on stage after his name was announced to say he couldn't have it which would have been even more chaotic.
I bet the Producers were watching praying to god it wasn't his name in that envelope...

knittingaddict · 28/03/2022 17:03

It's about time they stopped "shock jock" comedians roasting people who can't fight back. A black woman has to just take it and smile as if nothing had happened, no matter how hurt and humiliated they are? Shouldn't be allowed and hope this makes them think again next year.

Not excusing what WS did, but he was provoked by an unfunny idiot.
