Is DH BIU- to talk with DSIL about planned baby name

fringely · 26/03/2022 10:40

DSIL is 34 weeks pregnant with first DC.
A few weeks ago her and her DP announced the planned baby name.
The actual 'sound' of the name is fine, but it is heavily associated with something which DSIL and her DP were not really aware of. They have been made aware of the association since (as it's pretty common knowledge- not sure how they hadn't heard of it tbh!) but are of the opinion most people won't make the association. DH and I are of the other opinion that most people will definitely make the association, it's not a good association, and genuinely worry that it's not fair to give a baby that name and it's fully possible it could lead to bullying when older.

Whilst DP and strongly agree on the huge issue with the name and agree it's unfair to lumbar a baby with it, I don't think DH should say anything. DH thinks he should have a proper talk with her about his concerns on the name and why he doesn't think it's fair to give to a DN. I think nothing good will come and we should stay quiet.

(So far we have said very little about it. We were notably shocked when told what it was, and clarified 'X' as in X'?? But other than that have nodded and smiled).

@Thursa

I’m guessing Damien, and on hearing it my first thought would be The Omen.
That would be my first thought but it wouldn't be everyones. Damien isn't that bad. Adolf, Aryan or Lucifer would be bad names.
wetrainday · 26/03/2022 12:39

Must be Levi

Whinge · 26/03/2022 12:40

@YvanEhtNiojYvanEhtNioj

This might sound harsh, but are they a bit stupid? Perhaps they need reminded one more time that there about the infamous namesake.
Surely that depends on the name?

It really might not be as bad as the OP is making out.

TheLoupGarou · 26/03/2022 12:41

Is it Lucifer?

Mia184 · 26/03/2022 12:41

Ira?

TheLoupGarou · 26/03/2022 12:41

Aw, am too slow

SeaToSki · 26/03/2022 12:43

A couple of options

Suggest DH says to SIL…thats an edgy name because of x connotation, why dont you ask around a few friends and family and see if they see the same connection that I do…. Then hopefully she will get a lot of horrified reactions and reconsider, DH then wont be seen as the enemy

DH sends her the wiki page

Suggest she uses it as a middle name

Suggest they use a different spelling as then the dc can pronounce it differently when they are older

Grit his teeth and go the whole hog, but be prepared for sulks and tantrums

LottyD32 · 26/03/2022 12:44

My first thought was Anil or Analle for some reason.

I know someone who had a baby girl called Ursula recently. Everyone I spoke to was like 'the witch from Little Mermaid?' They obviously didn't think of that and now o don't mind it. It becomes their name very quickly and not the name that you would have connected it to

DaffTheDoggo · 26/03/2022 12:45

What's wrong with Levi?

WTF475878237NC · 26/03/2022 12:45

I don't really get the issue. Who cares who the namesake was, it will be for a totally different person.

potter5 · 26/03/2022 12:46

Saville?

Mangogogogo · 26/03/2022 12:46

I love the name Lennon and wanted to call my dog it… shouting it loud in my accent is unmistakably ‘Lenin’ so I didn’t Blush
I’m conflicted because I think things like ‘Levi’ and ‘Fred’ are really not associated with the killers. There are so, so many kids at my kids school called ‘something-rose’ and I doubt anyone has thought ‘serial killer’
If it’s lucifer or something I don’t even know what I’d do. If it was my sister I would definitely tell her lots but she’s not ridiculous in any way. If I was you, I’d leave your DH to it, he knows his relationship with his sister best!

Riverlee · 26/03/2022 12:47

You’ve mentioned the link, and they are fine with it. William can be shortened to Willy, and yet I know a few Wills.

Their baby, they get to name it.

Is it Damien?

SarahBellam · 26/03/2022 12:48

@Qwill

I think Isis is a lovely name, and won’t have the connotations for the next generation. I know one that’s had no issues at all.
No, that’s like calling your kid IRA or UVF or Al-Quaeda. It’s definitely associated with terrorism. We had a strip club in our town called Isis and even they changed their name to Wiggle.
Mangogogogo · 26/03/2022 12:48

Levi bellfield murdered Millie dowler. I wouldn’t even make that association personally and I would think anyone who was in the true crime world wouldn’t even know the guys name.

Allgreyeverything · 26/03/2022 12:49

Rasputin

This could be a Victoria Wood line, pmsl.

Mangogogogo · 26/03/2022 12:49

Wasnt* into true crime. God I’m useless on my phone

Beees · 26/03/2022 12:50

I think people seem to forget this and it's a really important thing to remember. Their peers will have a huge variety of names and chances are theirs won't be the most noteworthy.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 26/03/2022 12:50

I still think Stalin.

Or Boris.

DaffTheDoggo · 26/03/2022 12:50

@Mangogogogo Thanks- my first thoughts were Levi from the Bible and the jeans brand. I didn't think of the killer at all.

hauntedvagina · 26/03/2022 12:51

Is it Voldemort?

Levi is a good name with an excellent origin and meaning. If we want to avoid the names of murderers and the like, we'd have to put a block on loads of ordinary names.
