Is DH BIU- to talk with DSIL about planned baby name

fringely · 26/03/2022 10:40

DSIL is 34 weeks pregnant with first DC.
A few weeks ago her and her DP announced the planned baby name.
The actual 'sound' of the name is fine, but it is heavily associated with something which DSIL and her DP were not really aware of. They have been made aware of the association since (as it's pretty common knowledge- not sure how they hadn't heard of it tbh!) but are of the opinion most people won't make the association. DH and I are of the other opinion that most people will definitely make the association, it's not a good association, and genuinely worry that it's not fair to give a baby that name and it's fully possible it could lead to bullying when older.

Whilst DP and strongly agree on the huge issue with the name and agree it's unfair to lumbar a baby with it, I don't think DH should say anything. DH thinks he should have a proper talk with her about his concerns on the name and why he doesn't think it's fair to give to a DN. I think nothing good will come and we should stay quiet.

(So far we have said very little about it. We were notably shocked when told what it was, and clarified 'X' as in X'?? But other than that have nodded and smiled).

Oh I didn’t see all of the updates when I replied …
I must live under a rock cos the only Thing I knew called that was the dingles dog in emmerdale years ago
😂

Have I just read that it’s going to be called Genghis?? What the actual F*ck😯 Are they Mongolian? Hideous name and if it were my sister I’d be telling her in no uncertain terms. Sometimes people are so selfish when it comes to naming a child.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 27/03/2022 18:30

Mick Jagger has a son called Lucifer. I admit I was a bit horrified and I’m not even religious (but brought up catholic, hence the horror).

Going on 'Sympathy For The Devil' and Jagger's association with film-maker Kenneth Anger, I assume that was done in full awareness and as a deliberate 'tribute' to the 'famous' one.

TheOrigRights · 27/03/2022 18:31

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll

To derail slightly, we had Biff, Chip & Kipper on CBeebies earlier (nothing wrong with any of those three names for a child, obvs Grin), and they credited the writer of the books - Roderick Hunt.

Firstly, why did his parents not think for just a few moments; and secondly, if anybody out there called Roderick has a cast iron reason to ask to be called/known as Rod or Roddie, it has to be him!! I just hope he doesn't live in Wales, as people would quite literally think that his actual name was Rhodri C... !!

I don't understand this post at all.
HestersSamplerofCarrots · 27/03/2022 18:33

@TheOrigRights say roderick hunt several times, out loud, quite fast.

Then see if you understand why he might insist on having it shortened to Rod…

Lurking9to5 · 27/03/2022 18:35

I think mick jaggers son is lucian or lucas. Not lucifer!

Enko · 27/03/2022 18:42

I've known a Genghis in the past you get used to it. I am surprised they haven't heard of Genghis Khan obviously but it could be worse.

Enko · 27/03/2022 18:44

Mick Jaggers L son is Lucas I think Deveraux Octavian Basil Jagger got the short end of the stick when it comes to names Mick used. w his partners.

NippyWoowoo · 27/03/2022 18:46

Definitely do not associate Genghis with evil. Have heard the name but would have to Google him.

As others have echoed, it's just a horrible job name

I get that it sounds a bit like cunt but it's not like it makes a phrase.
There are lots and lots of worse names.

Beautiful3 · 27/03/2022 18:51

Genghis as in Genghis Khan?!

ireadthepostaboutbeingouted · 27/03/2022 18:53

Its Jezebel! Well that's my guess.

Really - you wouldn't have a problem with people thinking that was a part/a syllable of your name?! And, as I said, Rhodri is a common Welsh name, so it could actually sound like his first name is Rhodri and his surname is.... something unfortunate.

Chocolatehamper · 27/03/2022 18:58

@GlitchStitch

Isis?

That's what I first thought too... Isis as in the goddess (or river if you're closer to Oxford) and then the obvious association.

If it is, it's a very pretty name and one that's been around a lot longer than what it's more known for now.

Would Iris be an acceptable compromise? Very similar and just as beautiful!

Mellowyellow222 · 27/03/2022 18:58

Lolita?

Fernandina · 27/03/2022 18:59

Oh dear me no.

JacquelineCarlyle · 27/03/2022 19:00

It's a dreadful name - your DH definitely needs to speak up. Poor kid!

You can stop guessing, OP has already given the name

Yes. Ask if it's a joke
GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 27/03/2022 19:21

Oh dear god. We're emerging from a pandemic, on the verge of WW3, soaring food prices and this is your biggest worry?

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 27/03/2022 19:22

most people seem to be agreeing

No. We're really not.

SpaceFarce · 27/03/2022 19:23

GHENGIS?! What other possible connotation can they think of, other than Khan?

Absolutely. I can't believe she even thought of such a name, did she not do any history at school? Not that you'd need to be much of a historian to know something about Genghis Khan, there's enough said and written about him.
