Is DH BIU- to talk with DSIL about planned baby name

fringely · 26/03/2022 10:40

DSIL is 34 weeks pregnant with first DC.
A few weeks ago her and her DP announced the planned baby name.
The actual 'sound' of the name is fine, but it is heavily associated with something which DSIL and her DP were not really aware of. They have been made aware of the association since (as it's pretty common knowledge- not sure how they hadn't heard of it tbh!) but are of the opinion most people won't make the association. DH and I are of the other opinion that most people will definitely make the association, it's not a good association, and genuinely worry that it's not fair to give a baby that name and it's fully possible it could lead to bullying when older.

Whilst DP and strongly agree on the huge issue with the name and agree it's unfair to lumbar a baby with it, I don't think DH should say anything. DH thinks he should have a proper talk with her about his concerns on the name and why he doesn't think it's fair to give to a DN. I think nothing good will come and we should stay quiet.

(So far we have said very little about it. We were notably shocked when told what it was, and clarified 'X' as in X'?? But other than that have nodded and smiled).

Lucifer?

@Whiskersonkittens21

Lucifer?
And the prize for reading the thread goes to...
bellac11 · 27/03/2022 09:42

@DaffTheDoggo

I’m curious how many people would actually recognise the name and if they did who he was

Surely almost everybody would. He's hardly obscure.

It's a terrible name. I think OP's DH should say something, just once, and then leave it.

You would be amazed at what people dont know. I love history and reading so I know lots of historical information and characters and people have no idea what Im talking about some of the time

Mind you, Im the same about modern day celebs/film stars/pop stars and politicians, very poor knowledge.

I think people may have heard the name but couldnt tell you who he was.

LannieDuck · 27/03/2022 09:44

If they hadn't heard of Genghis Khan before.... how did they come up with the name?

I can't imagine it would have been on one of those popular baby name lists.

FromOurHatsToOurFeet · 27/03/2022 10:01

I'd be slightly concerned about the likelihood of nominative determinism - imagine a 2 year old toddler trashing through the play group, throwing toys and babies around - 'that's just little Genghis'

EthelTheAardvark · 27/03/2022 10:15

@bellac11

His name was Temujin which is quite nice in its way, but I wonder are they white British? What if little Temujin/Ghengis grows up to be golden haired, very pale, slight of build and shy.

He wont quite fit his name.

Loving the thought of a kid called Genghis who grows up to be a stereotypical nerd who wouldn't say boo to a goose.
ThumbWitchesAbroad · 27/03/2022 10:30

If they don't know the name from history, did they get it from Eastenders?
Genghis was the name given to the Irish wolfhound - soppy dog, but huge - and may have been meant to be fearsome.

I still don't think it's a great idea. But they're going to do it, so you might just have to think of some alternative nicknames for him!

Hengist would be a reasonable alternative that sounds very similar...
(he was only a German invader who then became King of Kent, so not as bad as Genghis...)

Fivebeanchilli · 27/03/2022 10:30

Genghis is.... bad.
Where did they even come up with it if it wasn't for Genghis Khan?!

ParisLondonTokyoSlough · 27/03/2022 10:35

But it’s not even a nice sounding name, even without the connotations. I could understand a name like Isis or Judas or Cain because they actually sound quite nice.

That said, Ghengis is definitely better than Adolf or Satan but that’s not exactly high praise or a reason to go ahead with the decision. I probably wouldn’t mention it again since it’s not the worst name on the list but I don’t think it’s fair to a child to give them that name.

Skelligsfeathers · 27/03/2022 10:51

I think they are winding you up and he will actually be called Oliver or Jack or something.

ddl1 · 27/03/2022 11:04

Genghis??? Well, it's up to them; but not a great name. Genghis Khan was a murderous dictator, even by mediaeval standards, and, by a low estimate, responsible for four million deaths, and possibly many times that number. I doubt that most people nowadays have a detailed knowledge of his life and actions, but he has certainly gone into folk-memory in a negative way; I have several times heard people being described disapprovingly as 'to the right of Genghis Khan'.

bellac11 · 27/03/2022 11:11

Yes this, they're probably pissing themselves.
HELLITHURT · 27/03/2022 11:20

Daily mail fodder here!

mam0918 · 27/03/2022 12:35

@fringely

Ok I'm kinda done here. The name is Genghis.
Not quite the same but Norman Reedus (the actor who plays Daryl in Walking Dead) has a son called Mingus Reedus.

I always thought it was a terrible name in sound etc... and the connotations of the word 'Ming/Minger' but I guess some people like those, Genghis sounds slightly better than Mingus to me.

FrydayFish · 27/03/2022 12:36

Genghis khan murdered 4 million people but that was nothing compared to Cain, he murdered 25% of the world's population!

NippyWoowoo · 27/03/2022 13:08

Oooh, names after Kings for me thinking.

Cnut?

mavisgreen · 27/03/2022 13:09

I think it's Ira, if you say the sound of it is okay and your DH had to ask if she meant like... so IRA.

mavisgreen · 27/03/2022 13:12

Oh sorry, I see it's Genghis! Never mind!

NippyWoowoo · 27/03/2022 13:17

@mam0918

Clearly, these ones are joke names no one would really use so can be irradicated:

Bukkake
Stalin (although Starling is a legit name)
Pol Pot
Mussolini
Nosferatu
Bing
Optimus Prime
Nazi
Genghis
Beelzebub
Rumplestiltskin
Hades
Pontius Pilate
Lenin (although Lennon is not unusual at all)
Oedipus
Mordor
Sauron
Putin
Voldemort

Cultural names - would be odd for me to use them but fine for some other cultures:

Adolf
Vladimir
Sadam
Isis
Jesus
Mohammed (literally the most common name in the world lol)
Osama
Swastika
Vlad

Normal names - head-scratching these are on a list like this:

Fred
Harold
Peter
Charlie
Boris
Donald
Andrew
Cain
Damien
Josef
Levi
Tobin
Jimmy

Unusual but honestly no one cares:

Lucifer (I actually think its cool, very few die-hard Christians left)
Noddy (feels silly/juvenile but who cares that much)
Casanova (people use Romeo I see no difference)
Salome (???)
Ebenezer (quirky)
Satan (not advised but who cares, similar-sounding names like Peyton are fine)
Saxon (I actually love this name)
Mitler (no idea what this references)
Brutus (would be awesome for a bulldog)

I assumed that 'Mitler' was a Hitler misspelling 😂
LBFseBrom · 27/03/2022 14:46

My goodness, everyone will think of Genghis Khan, everyone! What is the woman thinking of? She must be stopped immediately, stupid thing that she is. The idea of saddling a little baby with that name is horrific, tantamount to abuse.
Show her this:
historyofyesterday.com/4-of-the-many-brutal-acts-committed-by-genghis-khan-during-the-mongol-conquests-9d8725f27226

I'm surprised her husband is going along with it and wonder what the prospective grandparents will say. There is the possibility that she is doing a wind up I suppose - I hope.

It would be great if she was on here and read this thread.
