Is DH BIU- to talk with DSIL about planned baby name

fringely · 26/03/2022 10:40

DSIL is 34 weeks pregnant with first DC.
A few weeks ago her and her DP announced the planned baby name.
The actual 'sound' of the name is fine, but it is heavily associated with something which DSIL and her DP were not really aware of. They have been made aware of the association since (as it's pretty common knowledge- not sure how they hadn't heard of it tbh!) but are of the opinion most people won't make the association. DH and I are of the other opinion that most people will definitely make the association, it's not a good association, and genuinely worry that it's not fair to give a baby that name and it's fully possible it could lead to bullying when older.

Whilst DP and strongly agree on the huge issue with the name and agree it's unfair to lumbar a baby with it, I don't think DH should say anything. DH thinks he should have a proper talk with her about his concerns on the name and why he doesn't think it's fair to give to a DN. I think nothing good will come and we should stay quiet.

(So far we have said very little about it. We were notably shocked when told what it was, and clarified 'X' as in X'?? But other than that have nodded and smiled).

@fringely

Ok I'm kinda done here. The name is Genghis.
Are they fans of The Hu by any chance. A Mongolian folk rock bank who sing about Genghis? Maybe they think it's cool because of that? But there is only one isn't there. Can't possibly be confused with another.
SpaghettiNotCourgetti · 26/03/2022 22:02

ChloeHel "My mum used to know someone who’s name was pronounced muh-von-wee but was spelt Myfanny…ah the pros of being Welsh."

And you're sure it wasn't Myfanwy? Which is an actual traditional Welsh name?

Because 'Myfanny' in Welsh would be something like 'muh - VAN - ee', - Welsh has a pretty good sound-letter correspondence in its orthography and so wouldn't have a random unwritten /w/ sound in there.

Also, I was really rooting for little Nosferatu.

Well, that's certainly...punchy.

Mr Khan's reputation and legacy has undergone a rehabilitation on recent years so maybe they're subscribers to Genghis as a Mongolian hero rather than a merciless killer.

Do they have Mongolian roots? Or are they more Macclesfield?

Hepzibar · 26/03/2022 22:03

They actually think Genghis is nice?

ChloeHel · 26/03/2022 22:04

@fringely hm I think you may actually get some good advice now we know the name!

I have no advice if my own so I had to google to see if anyone else has asked the question and someone did and got this response

“That name is associated with murder and mayhem, and that's no way for a little guy to begin life. If you are dead set on it, ( perhaps you think it's cute), make it his middle name after a very upstanding first name”

I think that’s good advice and a gentle way DH could tell them.

Swastika is not bad.
It is the Hindu name and sign of peace.
Educate yourself.

Yeah, we know.

But what do you think most people think when they hear 'swastika'? Starts with Na ends with zis.

So yeah, it would be beyond bad to give that as a name. It would be incredibly cruel.

Okki · 26/03/2022 22:07

I'm obviously ignorant as I don't think I'd take exception to a name that belonged to someone who has been dead for 1000 years. Can't think of any British people who we can't name our children after who were involved in the creation of the empire - which was barbaric at times. But then I guess no one calls their children napoleon either. Hmmm.

No, just confirmed with Mum and she swears by the spelling Myfanny. We are Welsh, and I am Welsh speaking so know it’s meant to be spelt with a “w” but apparently hers was with an “n”.

OK let's say it is.

Its not like Judas at all. You can use Judas in place of betrayl or betrayer. No one says 'wow you turned out to be such a Gengis'

Its not like Judas at all.

@SevenWaystoLeave

Well here's all the potential boy's names mentioned on the thread up to the point OP said the name had already been mentioned. So it's one of these. I admit there's some stinkers in there, but also some which are fine. I'm struggling to see how the name could be so bad and yet DSIL not be aware of it though.

Ok. Not the worst name

But I do feel for any kid with that name

Okki · 26/03/2022 22:16

@IVFConfusion I get what you're saying, but presumably if you lived in a country where you would know that a name like Swastika would be highly offensive you would respect the culture of the country you were living in and not use it. Just as I know not to be offended if I go to India and see the swastika used in decoration etc.

well its not especially musical but what is wrong with Genghis? When I google, I find political leader, national hero and founder of a nation.
