Is DH BIU- to talk with DSIL about planned baby name

fringely · 26/03/2022 10:40

DSIL is 34 weeks pregnant with first DC.
A few weeks ago her and her DP announced the planned baby name.
The actual 'sound' of the name is fine, but it is heavily associated with something which DSIL and her DP were not really aware of. They have been made aware of the association since (as it's pretty common knowledge- not sure how they hadn't heard of it tbh!) but are of the opinion most people won't make the association. DH and I are of the other opinion that most people will definitely make the association, it's not a good association, and genuinely worry that it's not fair to give a baby that name and it's fully possible it could lead to bullying when older.

Whilst DP and strongly agree on the huge issue with the name and agree it's unfair to lumbar a baby with it, I don't think DH should say anything. DH thinks he should have a proper talk with her about his concerns on the name and why he doesn't think it's fair to give to a DN. I think nothing good will come and we should stay quiet.

(So far we have said very little about it. We were notably shocked when told what it was, and clarified 'X' as in X'?? But other than that have nodded and smiled).

If it is Salome, which has been mentioned by two PP on the thread. It's super obscure. You'd have to be really, really into the bible, old films or swiftly cancelled Nathan Lane sitcoms from the 90s to have heard of her. Even in the Rita Hayworth film, which none of here peers will have seen, the script absolves her of all blame.

SevenWaystoLeave · 26/03/2022 20:33

Thing about it being Lucifer is I absolutely can't understand how DSil/DBil would not know the connotations of that, even if you think it's a super-cool name surely you know it means the devil

autienotnaughty · 26/03/2022 20:43

@fringely

I'm trying to think of examples that a similar to be as accurate as possible without outing.

I'm not talking about something like 'Myra' where the child's generation likely won't remember Myra Hindley. This association will be there his whole life.

The closest I can think of is 'Judas' but the name in question is more synonymous than even Judas is.

I'm guessing isis
autienotnaughty · 26/03/2022 20:48

@DaffTheDoggo

I'm guessing something like Medea or Jocasta.

If it's Delilah then I think that's fine and I'd be more concerned about people singing Tom Jones than the biblical story. Jezebel probably less good.

My dn is Delilah my much younger sil had never heard of either Delilah song!

I knew someone who was considering BJ as a name 😂😂😂

You’d think so..they may think it’s just the name of the cat from Cinderella. Or they got it from the TV series “Lucifer” and think it’s simply a very cool name that a guy with a British accent who also happens to be the devil has so must be acceptable.

Was it short for anything or simply BJ? 😂

My mum used to know someone who’s name was pronounced muh-von-wee but was spelt Myfanny…ah the pros of being Welsh.

I doubt it's Lucifer as the OP used that as a comparison earlier in the thread.

Lucifer is another comparable. That and Judas are the most similar.

Either way I'm sure in 6 months time the OP will associate which ever name it is with her gorgeous nephew and in a years time she will have stopped making the connection entirely.

SleepingStandingUp · 26/03/2022 21:13

@fringely do you think your SIL and bil are actually looking for the kind of dramatic reaction?

Oh thanks for this, I didn’t pick up on that. Ok everyone, back to the drawing board.

I genuinely don't think it's a joke or a drama attention thing. They think it's nice. They think it's a name which has also been associated with X, whereas I would say most people think it's synonymous with X.

@mam0918

Clearly, these ones are joke names no one would really use so can be irradicated:

Bukkake
Stalin (although Starling is a legit name)
Pol Pot
Mussolini
Nosferatu
Bing
Optimus Prime
Nazi
Genghis
Beelzebub
Rumplestiltskin
Hades
Pontius Pilate
Lenin (although Lennon is not unusual at all)
Oedipus
Mordor
Sauron
Putin
Voldemort

Cultural names - would be odd for me to use them but fine for some other cultures:

Adolf
Vladimir
Sadam
Isis
Jesus
Mohammed (literally the most common name in the world lol)
Osama
Swastika
Vlad

Normal names - head-scratching these are on a list like this:

Fred
Harold
Peter
Charlie
Boris
Donald
Andrew
Cain
Damien
Josef
Levi
Tobin
Jimmy

Unusual but honestly no one cares:

Lucifer (I actually think its cool, very few die-hard Christians left)
Noddy (feels silly/juvenile but who cares that much)
Casanova (people use Romeo I see no difference)
Salome (???)
Ebenezer (quirky)
Satan (not advised but who cares, similar-sounding names like Peyton are fine)
Saxon (I actually love this name)
Mitler (no idea what this references)
Brutus (would be awesome for a bulldog)

It's on your 'joke names' list. I wish I was joking.
OP posts:
fringely · 26/03/2022 21:34

So I'm saying that it's on the below 'joke' list, does that affect what advice people are giving? About whether DH should talk to them seriously about it?
I cannot stress enough it is not Alexa, Madeline, Charlie or Molly- all perfectly bloody normal names!!

OP posts:
Beees · 26/03/2022 21:38

So if you've narrowed it down to one of these names then why not just say the name.

Bukkake
Stalin (although Starling is a legit name)
Pol Pot
Mussolini
Nosferatu
Bing
Optimus Prime
Nazi
Genghis
Beelzebub
Rumplestiltskin
Hades
Pontius Pilate
Lenin (although Lennon is not unusual at all)
Oedipus
Mordor
Sauron
Putin
Voldemort

I've taught a Genghis and a Hades in my time so neither of those would make me raise an eyebrow.

Lenin would be shortened to Len so whilst not my top choice it also wouldn't be too out there.

autienotnaughty · 26/03/2022 21:39

@ChloeHel yes dad was Ben so Ben junior. Still not acceptable tho 😂😂 love myfanny 😂

Because 1 name is a lot more outing than 15-odd possible names Hmm

I don't understand your logic. Your SIL and her husband will know this thread is about them if they see it anyway so it's already outing.
