Is DH BIU- to talk with DSIL about planned baby name

fringely · 26/03/2022 10:40

DSIL is 34 weeks pregnant with first DC.
A few weeks ago her and her DP announced the planned baby name.
The actual 'sound' of the name is fine, but it is heavily associated with something which DSIL and her DP were not really aware of. They have been made aware of the association since (as it's pretty common knowledge- not sure how they hadn't heard of it tbh!) but are of the opinion most people won't make the association. DH and I are of the other opinion that most people will definitely make the association, it's not a good association, and genuinely worry that it's not fair to give a baby that name and it's fully possible it could lead to bullying when older.

Whilst DP and strongly agree on the huge issue with the name and agree it's unfair to lumbar a baby with it, I don't think DH should say anything. DH thinks he should have a proper talk with her about his concerns on the name and why he doesn't think it's fair to give to a DN. I think nothing good will come and we should stay quiet.

(So far we have said very little about it. We were notably shocked when told what it was, and clarified 'X' as in X'?? But other than that have nodded and smiled).

If it’s Lolita I think you have to say something more…

Seleniummillenium · 26/03/2022 19:19

Why are you so bothered. It’s not your baby and it’s not really your business. I would leave it with them.

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/03/2022 19:20

@SevenWaystoLeave

Well here's all the potential boy's names mentioned on the thread up to the point OP said the name had already been mentioned. So it's one of these. I admit there's some stinkers in there, but also some which are fine. I'm struggling to see how the name could be so bad and yet DSIL not be aware of it though.

Adolf

Sadam
Bukkake
Fred

ChloeHel · 26/03/2022 19:25

Just re-reading through some of the names and chuckling at the thought of it being them..Grin

Optimus prime, Sauron, Bukkake and Nosferatu are my favourite.

SevenWaystoLeave · 26/03/2022 19:28

Beautiful!

fringely · 26/03/2022 19:46

So I had no idea about Lolita, have just been looking into to it. It's not that name, thankfully.

StScholastica · 26/03/2022 19:58

garlictwist · 26/03/2022 20:01

Herod?

mam0918 · 26/03/2022 20:03

Clearly, these ones are joke names no one would really use so can be irradicated:

Bukkake
Stalin (although Starling is a legit name)
Pol Pot
Mussolini
Nosferatu
Bing
Optimus Prime
Nazi
Genghis
Beelzebub
Rumplestiltskin
Hades
Pontius Pilate
Lenin (although Lennon is not unusual at all)
Oedipus
Mordor
Sauron
Putin
Voldemort

Cultural names - would be odd for me to use them but fine for some other cultures:

Adolf
Vladimir
Sadam
Isis
Jesus
Mohammed (literally the most common name in the world lol)
Osama
Swastika
Vlad

Normal names - head-scratching these are on a list like this:

Fred
Harold
Peter
Charlie
Boris
Donald
Andrew
Cain
Damien
Josef
Levi
Tobin
Jimmy

Unusual but honestly no one cares:

Lucifer (I actually think its cool, very few die-hard Christians left)
Noddy (feels silly/juvenile but who cares that much)
Casanova (people use Romeo I see no difference)
Salome (???)
Ebenezer (quirky)
Satan (not advised but who cares, similar-sounding names like Peyton are fine)
Saxon (I actually love this name)
Mitler (no idea what this references)
Brutus (would be awesome for a bulldog)

I don’t see how it could be Lucifer, OP said they weren’t aware of what it meant. I mean, not sure what world they live in if they didn’t know Lucifer was another name for the devil.

I think this might be a generation thing, actually. It seems so obvious to those of us over a certain age, but I can well understand some young adults having grown up without ever having it as a point of reference in their accumulated sphere of knowledge.

Even amongst people who do have a reasonable basic knowledge of the Bible, the name Lucifer has been removed in most of the modern versions, so it wouldn't necessarily be instinctive at all.

crosstalk · 26/03/2022 20:08

OP

Just get them to give the as yet to be born child three first names.

Then if this unsuitable name gets unbearable the child can switch to the others.

As Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson did.

After this post I already back tracked, as I searched for “Lucifer mumsnet” it seems Lucifer is the likely candidate!

"Satan (not advised but who cares, similar-sounding names like Peyton are fine)"

Seriously?

ChloeHel · 26/03/2022 20:15

"Satan (not advised but who cares, similar-sounding names like Peyton are fine)"

Yeah I agree..seriously? I think Satan is worse than Lucifer!!
kokoalemon · 26/03/2022 20:16

I’m amused by how this thread ranges from “You couldn’t possibly call a child Fred” to “Ah well, Satan is a fine name” Grin

Gwenhwyfar · 26/03/2022 20:16

"Blimey I’m naïve these days…didn’t know any of these 🤷🏼‍♀️😳"

Ok, yes, I have heard Charlie for cocaine, but it's hardly the first thing that would come to my mind on hearing the name.

Hepzibar · 26/03/2022 20:16

It's Hades. God of dead. Obvious.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 26/03/2022 20:17

Lucifer (I actually think its cool, very few die-hard Christians left)

Not true at all - there are fewer than there may have once been, but the number worldwide is still enormous. Not that it's up to them, of course; but for people over, say 40 or 50, even if they are not Christians in the slightest, most of them will have the name as a point of reference and will frequently consider it in a negative light.

Ebenezer (quirky)

Biblically-speaking, an Ebenezer was actually a positive thing - a memorial of personal faith; it's only really the likes of Dickens (and The Shamen!) who have caused it to be associated with an unpleasant characterisation.

Satan (not advised but who cares, similar-sounding names like Peyton are fine)

Many people would care. As with Lucifer, it still carries a very negative connotation, even for people of no faith at all. It's quirky for an aggressive dog, but highly unwise for a human to go through life as. Just because it rhymes with Peyton or Leighton doesn't mean anything: using the same logic, you could equally say that, as Brit/Britt is a relatively normal, inoffensive name, that would be justification for calling your child Shit!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 26/03/2022 20:19

the literal meaning of Madeline is 'little girl'

No, it isn’t.

Madeleine is from Magdalene, which means “woman of Magdala” and “tower”, “great” and “elevated”

Sorry, my error - I was thinking of the German version of Madelein(e). Either way, it's definitely not a boy's name, though!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 26/03/2022 20:24

Could you possibly steer them towards Louis/Lewis as a first name, with the Welsh name Ifor (as in 'The Engine' - pronounced ee-vor) as a middle name? Grin

SevenWaystoLeave · 26/03/2022 20:29

@smooshraspberry

Enola?
Enola on its own I think is okay, it is a legitimate name (think the plane was named after the pilot's mother). It's only if it's Enola Gay in full I would think is a no-no.
