What holidays did you go on as a child?

Just curious really. We never went to France or Spain etc or further afield when I was little, we would go and stay with relatives in fun cities or lovely parts of the countryside which I adored, and have wonderful memories. But at the same time I remember poring over travel brochures wishing we could go abroad as well!

Where did your family go on holidays when you were young? Did it instil a sense of adventure? Do you take your own kids back to some of your favourite places now?

We just did uk caravan/chalet holidays up until I was a teenager as couldn’t afford anything more. I was so desperate to go on a plane my parents drove me to stay at my grandparents for a weekend (5hr drive) and I got a flight back by myself aged around 9! (Dedicated flight attendant to look out for me and another kid flying independently). Once I was about 12 we had more money so Europe holidays were possible.

Really shit camping ones

RuthW · 17/03/2022 16:05

Butlins in 70s and early 80s

Pyri · 17/03/2022 16:07

We also did camping mostly, around England or sometimes France. We once went to Tenerife but it seemed mostly stressful for my parents so back to camping.

We also had holidays at my grandparents houses which certainly didn’t feel like holidays.

Children these days who have much easier access to travel are very lucky!

I remember going to Devon when I was about 8 and then Florida at 11. Aside from that I can't really think of many, we did have ponies though which curtailed a lot of going away for long periods.
Myself and now DH have travelled a lot, particularly before the kids were born. We then did UK based holidays when they were very little and started going further afield when they were 6 plus. They are quite well travelled now, my parents and sister are not so bothered about holidays.

Oblomov22 · 17/03/2022 16:10

I don't remember. 3, possibly. One time to Cornwall. Drove to Camping in a tent in France. Fab. Then, we hired a Spanish villa in a complex of 6 with a shared pool, flying on an aeroplane. My 2 brothers spent the whole week bombing into the pool. We ate paella. We thought we'd died and gone to heaven.

Hoppinggreen · 17/03/2022 16:10

I remember going to Spain when I was 9 and loved it. We also went when I was 13, we drove there in 3 cars and it was quite a journey!!
Other than that we mostly went to Devon or Cornwall in chalets on holiday parks

hangrylady · 17/03/2022 16:11

Always in the UK. I remember once my dad booked somewhere not realising it was only about 20 mins from our house. My Nan was with us so he drove around for an hour so it seemed like it was further away Grin

YoComoManzanas · 17/03/2022 16:11

None. A trip to the seaside or alton towers was considered a big day out. Never went away and stayed elsewhere ever. First holiday was age 18 with friends. I paid for myself.

Cottage in North Wales, often with my grandparents and my youngest uncle
Apart from Wales, and one holiday in Northern Ireland, the only time my father left Liverpool was when he did national service in Germany
My mum went to Majorca once in her 40s, Scotland a few times, still goes to North Wales.
I've travelled all over Africa, and managed to take my son a few times.
We do like the UK though, Cornwall, Edinburgh, London, Isle of Wight and north Wales our favourites
I didnt fly until I was 28

ASaucerfulOfSecrets · 17/03/2022 16:13

My Dad had worked a lot in the USA when I was little (leaving me and mum in the UK) so when I was old enough to appreciate it he'd take me to the places he used to go to, which usually involved flying to a random city, hiring a car and driving around for a month.

It was great fun and something I did repeat with my kids.

Soubriquet · 17/03/2022 16:13

Malta
Disney world x3
Spain (several times. Can’t remember how many)
Turkey
Dominican Republic
Kenya

I haven’t been able to do the same for my own two children. They have so far only had two holidays and both have been at butlins

Soubriquet · 17/03/2022 16:14

Forgot Cornwall

Done Cornwall twice

Maggiesgirl · 17/03/2022 16:16

In the UK always Scotlsnd as my Grandparents lived there. Apart from that we went to Perth and Darwin in Australia,
Fiji and Sri Lanka. We did live in Singapore though.

RussianSpy101 · 17/03/2022 16:16

We mainly did the Canary Islands and Spain but went to Florida twice and did Kenya and Dominican Republic as a teen.

We take our own children all over, we absolutely love travel and all our (3) children love it too. DD is 8 and has been to over 12 different countries.

Proudboomer · 17/03/2022 16:18

Camping or a farm house in places like the Isle of Wight or Great Yarmouth. We would go en mass with cousins and aunts and uncles and all cram in to whatever had been booked. A farmhouse would have the house full pull older kids sleeping in my uncles camper van and a tent pitched in the grounds. A holiday chalet in Great Yarmouth with 3 beds would have 3 separate families in each room with sleeping bags on the floor and fighting to get the sofa. No such thing as occupation numbers you just booked what you could afford by all chipping in and the owners didn’t care as long as everything was left in good order when you left.

ASaucerfulOfSecrets · 17/03/2022 16:20

I remember one year going to I think Plymouth. It was a stunning house perched on a cliff. The views were amazing.
It rained all week and to keep me entertained mum walked me round a big department store which I think was called Dingles. We were in there every bloody day for the week.
We went to Spain the year after. Grin

canyoubelievethat · 17/03/2022 16:20

We used to do Haven caravan holidays and I loved them! Still do now, but the prices now are unbelievable compared to what they used to be. I think my Mum and Dad booked them as cheap deals!

Littlegoth · 17/03/2022 16:25

Think i was really lucky. I went to Holland, France and Germany with primary school. France and Belgium with high school. With family, Cornwall twice, wales once, London a couple of times, France twice, Tenerife twice, mallorca at least 8 times, Portugal 3 times, Switzerland twice, Malta once. As an adult I’ve travelled extensively. I hope I can do the same for my kids but it won’t be for a few years.

Littlegoth · 17/03/2022 16:26

Ibiza and menorca. We went abroad every year growing up.

Littlegoth · 17/03/2022 16:26

Corfu. Forgot that one!

Groovee · 17/03/2022 16:27

We often went to the East Neuk of Fife in the early years. Then bought a caravan at Berwick upon Tweed so spent about 8 years going there.

fairgame84 · 17/03/2022 16:29

Funnily enough I was talking to DB about this the other day as he's just booked his first holiday abroad at the age of 35.
We never went abroad as kids, mum and dad couldn't afford it. They started going abroad once we'd left home.
We used to go to hoseasons for one week every summer. A different camp each year but always hoseasons. We used to do one day on camp then the rest of the time we used to go on days out. There was always a day for dad where we would die of boredom looking round churches then a day for mum where we'd get dragged round a stately home. Then a beach day. We'd normally visit the nearest city. We'd always set off about 8am because dad thinks everywhere takes 8 hours to get to, even if it's only 4 hours away. We used to stop off for lunch for a few hours in a town/city approx halfway there both on the way down and the way back.
The holidays weren't bad, we had some lovely holidays and great memories except for the churches and stately homes!
DB and I both have our own families now and have never taken our kids to stately homes and never will.

MrsMoastyToasty · 17/03/2022 16:30

Spain with grandparents too. I was about 5.
Mainly caravan holidays in Devon (parents had a tourer). We also took the caravan to Bordeaux and Brittany.
Then another package holidays to Spain after O'levels .
