What holidays did you go on as a child?

Just curious really. We never went to France or Spain etc or further afield when I was little, we would go and stay with relatives in fun cities or lovely parts of the countryside which I adored, and have wonderful memories. But at the same time I remember poring over travel brochures wishing we could go abroad as well!

Where did your family go on holidays when you were young? Did it instil a sense of adventure? Do you take your own kids back to some of your favourite places now?

Trips by car to see grandparents. Camping in our little travel trailer (caravan).

We did one long trip across Canada/US from BC to visit my Dad's sister in the US who was terminally ill. Towed the trailer and stayed in campgrounds. I remember "us kids" pouring over the campground directory trying to find one with a swimming pool or playground.

We went eurocamping a lot in France. We'd either drive or get the train.

My parents also owned a second home with two other families in Whitby which was only a couple of hours from home so we spent a lot of time there.

We are in the Northeast, in the 70's and early 80's we went to Scotland. Very small, family run caravan park (more like their garden with toilet/shower block). Went there lots. Once hired a mobile home - still went to Scotland. Then had our own small caravet, for weekends away with Caravan Club. Never went abroad. Once stayed in a hotel in Torquay - felt like I was abroad 😂 We do still holiday in this country with son - Devon, Cornwall etc. We had lots of day trips as children.

Peccary · 17/03/2022 16:58

We went on one holiday, to a caravan and it rained so much my dad gave up and we all went home. We actually lived in a European country for a chunk of time so all our trips were back to the UK to visit family. We lived very near the border with another country and went there often for day trips.

In my 25 years as an adult I have travelled a lot, taking DD (4) on her first long haul this year. She has been to the same number of countries as I had at 18!

All UK based as couldn’t afford more. They were great but when I finally got to go abroad I couldn’t believe how much I loved it. We take our kids abroad once or twice a year plus UK city breaks. We prioritise it over bigger house etc. travel as a family is important to us

Self catering mostly in Italy, France and UK - lots of visiting cities churches and castles. We did a package deal to a Majorca resort once but decided never again - my parents hated the resort, we got given an awful apartment right above a nightclub and my dad complained and got us moved to a much better one. As kids we enjoyed it but my parents hated it. Never did any long haul travel as my mum didn't like flying and my dad probably didn't want the faff of going really far.

Have retained this habit as parents - I much prefer self catering when with kids, like to stay in places with history and I hate beaches and sunbathing. DH would probably happily be on a beach, but isn't too bothered - I will allow a day or two of beach for sake of everyone else, but I basically find them too hot and really uncomfortable unless I have a chair/lounger in shade.

Cornwall for Easter (or Maldives a couple of times), Tuscany or South of France in the summer, often a city break to somewhere like Madrid, Stockholm or Paris around October half term.

Nineties boom time was a good time to be a child of yuppies - don't think my kids will be getting quite the same treatment!

Kaleidoscope2 · 17/03/2022 17:04

We did quite a few uk ones like Devon and Somerset, Wales. When I was very young we didn't go abroad think the first time was around 8 when I went to India with grandparents, florida age 10, Italy, Cyprus and Spain in my early teens. I didn't feel like I never went on holiday but equally not like I was really well travelled either

gwenneh · 17/03/2022 17:08

Camping locally (within driving distance of home) every year. My parents owned a caravan.
For two EXCRUCIATING weeks every year we would be loaded into it and sit at a campsite somewhere. We did that until the year my mother finally lost her temper and packed us all up a week early and drove us home.
After that we still went -- on much shorter trips.
We never went abroad or to any "kids" destinations.

speakout · 17/03/2022 17:10

None at all.
We were poor.
No central heating, no phone, no fridge.

Strokethefurrywall · 17/03/2022 17:11

Greek islands mostly, interspersed with cottage stays in Northumberland and Cornwall.

quicklybeingdrivenmad · 17/03/2022 17:12

East coast most weekend in summer and part of summer holidays with my grandparents cos they had a chalet there, conrnwall or devon every year with mum and dad from being 2, then from being 6 or 7 Spain or France for a week, and Scarborough weekend in October half term to visit there and Whitby

Imissmoominmama · 17/03/2022 17:12

My parents didn’t have any spare cash, so we camped on really basic sites… almost every weekend.

Loved it then- still love it now. I wild camp by myself a lot. My DH loves hotels, so occasionally we do that, but if I’m honest, it’s not my thing.

Technosaurus · 17/03/2022 17:12

Born in the 80's, didn't leave the UK until I was 12. Cornwall when I was young and only child, Lake District after my brother was born (we lived in the North). Various day trips or weekend sightseeing trips to London etc, but not flat out holidays.

My Dad was self employed and made most of his money in summer so even our first holiday abroad (cheap deal to Ibiza of all places) he couldn't come. Two family holidays to Portugal after that but then I didn't have another holiday with my parents - when I was 14/15 I used to go and help my Dad at work in the summer holidays.

I've made up for it since with plenty of travelling, but can honestly say at the time I really didn't care (nor really notice) that we didn't really go on holidays.

ofwarren · 17/03/2022 17:13

Before aged 8 we went to a caravan in Wales every year, from 8 onwards we started going abroad. Spain, Portugal, Majorca and Menorca mainly.

We were in Birmingham so like most Brummies, we holidayed in Wales! All over, but I liked Pembrokeshire the best. Such great memories. Never abroad, too expensive. I used to spend hours pouring over brochures for far-flung places and making collages out of the photos!

Since then I’ve traveled to nearly half the world’s countries. I’ve lived in Malaysia, Philippines, France and now Switzerland (10 years here now). My own kids have foreign passports, speak my second language as their first and hold multi-citizenship, so couldn’t be more different to me as a kid.

I still love going back to Wales though 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 ♥️

TheCanyon · 17/03/2022 17:18

Flamingo land, Norfolk broads and Cornwall as a family. French exchange trips with the school. And visited my friend in Shetland by myself in my early teens.

justanothermanicmonday21 · 17/03/2022 17:18

I was quite lucky despite my parents not having much money, my grandparents had a camper van as we were growing up so we used to go away for the whole of summer with their camper friends to france and drive down into Spain as well as some nice UK holidays in the van. Then as we were junior school my mum worked at a travel agents and used to get good deals firstly a few trips to Spain and then mainly to Greece (as that's where they specialised) so I've been to most of Greece the islands and Cyprus.

My own children have been abroad twice so not as much but some nice UK holidays. I'm now a single parent so it's a bit more difficult to go abroad but I'm hoping to save and get some bargains as prices seem quite cheap at the moment.

Helpel · 17/03/2022 17:23

We went to France 'eurocamping' every year until I was 10. Then my parents sent us to a good state secondary (after private primary) so they had a load more money (didn't know this at the time but obvious now I look back). At this point we went on 3 skiing holidays over 5 years, then summers in Italy, Canada, Greek islands, canaries, Spain mainland - all of it self catering, bar one trip to Tenerife when I was 15 at an all inclusive style place which I loved but my parents hated!! I can imagine why but I had a total blast! We had great holidays and were really very spoilt. Still never made it to Disney, although now I'm a parent I totally get it - over my dead body Grin

PaintedDress · 17/03/2022 17:26

We travelled all over. My mum lost a family member and took it as a sign to travel, and take us along 😁 we went all over the world. My children are young, I intend to travel with them when they’re older though! Although Russia was high on my list and isn’t anymore :(

BeHappy91818 · 17/03/2022 17:29

Turkey, Greece, Egypt, Bulgaria, Spain, France.

All of those more then once.

Iv took my own kids to Mexico, usa, eygpt so far.
Would like to do Bali next year

gingerhills · 17/03/2022 17:29

Camping, youth hostelling or staying in static caravans (the kind where there's one mildewed van in a field of cows, not the kind in a holiday park Grin. Mainly UK - Scotland, Northumberland, Lakes. We went to Italy once or twice and France once. The rest of the family had a few holidays in France but I had a hobby that took up all summer so I used to stay behind home alone from age 16. I loved it.

BeHappy91818 · 17/03/2022 17:29

We also went to lots of places in the uk and close to the UK like the isle of white

marypoppins2022 · 17/03/2022 17:30

All around the uk camping in a caravan but as a teenager we went to France but still camping. Went to Ireland once a year to stay with family too

So far my kids are little both u see 5 so we have been away every year apart from 2020. And it's always a haven type holiday so then Altho it's a caravan there's swimming soft plays etc
