What holidays did you go on as a child?

Just curious really. We never went to France or Spain etc or further afield when I was little, we would go and stay with relatives in fun cities or lovely parts of the countryside which I adored, and have wonderful memories. But at the same time I remember poring over travel brochures wishing we could go abroad as well!

Where did your family go on holidays when you were young? Did it instil a sense of adventure? Do you take your own kids back to some of your favourite places now?

Lots of chalet holidays, mainly Devon or Isle of Wight with Grandparents, happy memories.

Onthegrid · 18/03/2022 20:27

For the first 10 years of my life we went to the same caravan site on the south coast every summer that was normal in the 70s.Then we started to go to France by ferry/car, I was 16 the first time I flew and 17 the last time I went on a family holiday (although we have just arranged one for this year about 35 years later).
After that I met my now DH and we started to travel at every opportunity and have been lucky to have been to many places around the world.
My DC have benefited from our love of travel and were both under 1 the first time they flew.

Camping often, even if just for weekends.

Drove to France when I was 8, stayed in a fancy 'house tent' thing - basically a giant tent with a fridge, ha!

When I was 11 we went on holiday to Crete - my mum had won big(gish) at bingo. We loved it so much my mum spent the next 5 years scrimping and saving all year round so that we could do as cheap as possible a week there each year. Some of my happiest memories!

I went to France and Belgium with school, too - my grandparents paid.

In adulthood I have travelled to a handful of other countries in Europe, and a few in South East Asia. I'd love to travel more, but we just can't afford it at the moment - we're saving up sloooowwllyyyy for a big trip to Peru in a few years, and I can't wait.

zhivagodr · 18/03/2022 22:45

Caravan holidays in Scotland always - didn’t fly until I was 12. I also used to pick up holiday brochures from the travel agent and read them like magazines… think it’s how I got so good at geography 😂

DdraigGoch · 18/03/2022 23:11

Mostly camping in Europe. Not our own tent, one of the firms which supplies ones already erected and equipped on site.

EeeICouldRipATissue · 18/03/2022 23:26

UK caravan sites and loved them
Still go now as an adult and take my kids too 😁

avamiah · 18/03/2022 23:32

To Blackpool and Wales only and I hated it.

TirednessButHappiness · 18/03/2022 23:39

Primary school age we usually went camping - just pitching up in fields, not on a campsite. One year we went to a self catering place on the Norfolk Broads which seemed really posh to me.

Secondary school age we went to France a few times, mostly camping but one year in a gite with another family.

RishiRich · 18/03/2022 23:41

Camping in France usually. We went to Wales one year but it rained nearly all the time and my parents swore never again! I loved our camping holidays, even the wet one, but absolutely hate camping as an adult.

When DB and I got a bit older we went on slightly different breaks. We did a cycling holiday on the French-German-Swiss border one year, a hotel break in Denmark and had two weeks in gîtes in France. We were also extremely fortunate to have grandparents in seaside and countryside houses with plenty of room so staying with them was lovely too.

Highlandrainbows · 18/03/2022 23:42

Mostly to my gran's house in Wales, sometimes in other parts of the UK. lots of festivals. Mum took us to Italy once when we were kids. I vaguely remember a French campsite with my mum & Gran. And my Gran was the most adventurous - she took us to the Netherlands, Paris, and Spain.

avamiah · 18/03/2022 23:46

I actually remember begging my mum and dad to take me to Spain when I was a kid as all my friends used to go on holiday's abroad and I felt the odd one out.It was anything to do with money issues for them more of they were set in their ways.

NalPolishRemover · 19/03/2022 00:32

We mostly had driving holidays to coastal / mountain areas for a few days.

Then we went to the isle of Man one year. London another year for 4 days.

I was about 16 or 17 before we went on a sun holiday to Tenerife. And after that we went to Mallorca another year & the South of France when i was in my early 20s

I have travelled a huge amount since leaving home & never on a package holiday.

Dh & I love to travel & our dc have been massively lucky to have seen as much of the world as they have. They've definitely had far more opportunities than we had growing up

caringcarer · 19/03/2022 00:39

I lived in Devon and patents took me to different places in Cornwall most years until my older sister married a man from Jersey in Chanel Islands. After that I got sent over to Jersey for 2 weeks to stay with my older sister, every summer. My parents then paid for my sister and her husband to fly back to UK with me. I loved my childhood holidays though.

caringcarer · 19/03/2022 00:45

@Crankley, we went to Teinmouth too, usually for day trips though. My Mum's favourite because if it rained we could all sit under the pier. Ferry trip across to Shaldon and back. Good sand, and if we behaved all day, allowed to go to the pier before we got train home. Happy days.

BirdWatch · 19/03/2022 04:05

Camping and staycations.

Ithinkimalonenow24 · 19/03/2022 11:12

We went on holiday in UK, Camping in a field, Dad didn't do holiday parks. Went Wales, Norfolk, Weymouth, Bournemouth + many more. My folks did Europe before kids, camping on a moped. They never have been in a plane and it's a regret that we didn't do that before they passed away.

cobblers123 · 19/03/2022 11:22

1962 - Butlins, Bognor Regis
1966 - London - hotel
1969 - Devon in a farmhouse
1971 - Guernsey - Hotel

Never went away with parents after that

Penners99 · 19/03/2022 11:23

None at all.

TheEarthIsNotFlat · 19/03/2022 11:25

We went to Florida every other year for three weeks. Then the opposite year we’d go elsewhere. We went to New Zealand one year, Portugal, New York. We’d go skiing most years but that was because my grandpa owned a chalet so we’d go and stay there.

Ineedaduvetday · 20/03/2022 22:44

None. I visited Mum's friends once and went back to the place I was born a few times but no 'holidays'. First time I travelled abroad I was 19.

NewPapaGuinea · 20/03/2022 22:48

Have family in Cornwall so would visit them a few times a year. Main family holiday was Eurocamp in France. Remember going to Spain once.

Flyingskunk · 20/03/2022 23:02

I was born in the 70s but seem to have been really lucky. My dad was fantastic at booking and organising holidays. In the UK we went to Devon, Cornwall, North Wales, Scotland we also went abroad to Germany, Yugoslavia (now Croatia), France and Majorca. We weren’t well off so not sure how we managed it!

Hobbesmanc · 21/03/2022 10:51

I was a seventies child. My widowed Granny took us abroad a few times as a family holiday (mum was a single parent). Menorca was a favourite- always self catering. We lived on the beach and had a marvellous time

Essexgirlupnorth · 21/03/2022 11:31

We used to spend the Easter holidays with my Grandma in Scotland with my parents and then a week or two in the summer holidays without our parents.

One or two weeks in a holiday cottage somewhere in UK went to Wales, Devon, Dorset, Peak District.
First went abroad at 15 years visit a friend of my Dad's in Germany and then sun parks in Holland when I was 17. First ever package holiday Spain was when I went with my university boyfriend at 19.

Part of it was my parents couldn't afford abroad holidays and partly 2 weeks on a beach would be my Dad's idea of Hell.

PhileasPhilby · 21/03/2022 12:03

I was incredibly lucky & we had amazing holidays - skiing every year, 3-4 European city breaks & then at least one ‘big’ holiday abroad - mix of Europe, the States & Asia.

At the time I had no idea how privileged we were.

Now I dream of being able to do the same for my dc - they’ve never skied yet & we tend to alternate U.K. & Europe holidays each year.
