What holidays did you go on as a child?

Just curious really. We never went to France or Spain etc or further afield when I was little, we would go and stay with relatives in fun cities or lovely parts of the countryside which I adored, and have wonderful memories. But at the same time I remember poring over travel brochures wishing we could go abroad as well!

Where did your family go on holidays when you were young? Did it instil a sense of adventure? Do you take your own kids back to some of your favourite places now?

Mostly holidays visiting family in Finland and Scotland, several times we did house exchange holidays in the Netherlands, and then there was camping/caravanning holidays in the UK. Only twice did we go on a 'proper' holiday abroad, once to Spain when my parents got a nice payout from the bank (dividends?) when it got taken over by another bank, and once to Cyprus.
We went on holiday a lot, at least once a year, but they were cheaper holidays because we stayed with family and friends, or did house swaps. We didn't all go on every holiday - sometimes one parent would take 2 or 3 of us on holiday and the others stayed home with the other parent, or as my older brothers aged out of family holidays they stayed home alone while us younger ones went. Quite a few were long holidays, like the whole summer, because my parents got lots of holiday time off work.

Doing much the same with my family now, our holidays usually being visiting my family in the UK, or in Lapland, with the occasional few days in a campsite cabin holiday each summer.

Mostly cottages in England. The only foreign holidays were Belgium and Austria and a weekend in Paris. In Belgium we went on a tour of war graves and battlefields which was really cheering for a 7 year old.

Touring caravan holidays to lovely places like Cornwall or Scotland

Static caravan once or twice

Camping in France

Didn't go abroad til I was 14 and we went to gran canaria

TurquoiseDragon · 17/03/2022 19:16

My childhood holidays were camping in either Cornwall or Norfolk, it was alternated every year.

I wouldn't go camping now, but I have lots of lovely memories.

tinytemper66 · 17/03/2022 19:19

Pontins every summer until I was 14. My dad went on strike and so we went to Tenby. Then back to Pontins one last time before we did 2 holidays on a bus to the South of France.

gogohm · 17/03/2022 19:23

Devon, Dorset, went to Cornwall once and Scotland twice (exotic!). Went abroad at 15 for the first time (French campsite)

pradavilla · 17/03/2022 19:26

We went abroad every year pretty much always Spain lol. I have traveled much further afield now and saw so many great things and visited so many countries.

I have been bk to some of the resorts with my kids which I think is nice. We've really only done beach/sun holidays with the kids too but will go further afield once they are bit older. Like Florida and New York. I love going to the states.

etulosba · 17/03/2022 19:26

1960s

France, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Italy, Germany and Switzerland that I remember. Plus cottages and camping/caravans in the UK.

MarshaBradyo · 17/03/2022 19:28

We lived 15 minutes from the beach in Aus so our summers were spent there

We did one big trip to U.K. as parents are English, so they visited home, but that was it until later on

TroysMammy · 17/03/2022 19:29

One chalet holiday park in Torbay with loads of family and friends and one just the 4 of us again a chalet holiday park in Torquay.

sqirrelfriends · 17/03/2022 19:36

We went to to the seaside and stayed in chalets, it was lovely.

When I was a bit older we started going a bit further afield- America as well as Spain, Greece, Portugal and Malta.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 17/03/2022 19:38

We went abroad every other year. Portugal, Spain x 2 (eurocamp), Turkey, Greek islands. all self catering and knowing what I know now-cheap holidays. we weren't poor-my step-mum was just a tight arse. she preferred to spend the money on the house (3 grand on curtains for the living room!!)

I want my kids to be more well travelled so they've done a few eurocamp holidays as youngsters (France and holland) and now they're a bit older they've been to Florida, Cyprus, Tunisia, Paris, Lanzarote and looking at Egypt for this years holiday. Holidays are good for the soul. I'm hoping when they're older my kids remember that our house decor is a little tired but they will remember the good times we had on holiday.

Usingit · 17/03/2022 19:41

Always UK holidays in a holiday cottage or caravan, as we got older we went camping, this was in the 60s so not many holidayed abroad. We went to Isle of Wight a lot and Devon. Lots of walks and going to the beach with a picnic, we didn't do things you had to pay for apart from slot machines and had a few fancy things to eat in the holiday house like those Lyon's individual fruit pies, and allowed more sweets than usual.

crispmidnightpeace · 17/03/2022 19:43

Twice to Spain with another family in a villa. Every summer to Blackpool with our family. That's it.

InsideTheNet · 17/03/2022 19:52

Child of the 60's -
A couple of days in Southport (about 15 miles from home) and
A week at a relatives house in Southampton.
That was it.

My DC's have had completely different experiences - we've taken them all over the world.

MajorCarolDanvers · 17/03/2022 19:57

Caravan holidays in Scotland until I was 10 as parents couldn't afford to go abroad.

Then 10-14 we went by bus to caravan holidays in France when parents had a bit more money.

Then later teens we flew to places like Yugoslavia and Malta and stayed in hotels.

I have taken my kids for a few UK caravan holidays for the experience and it was fun. But mostly we fly to the med. First long haul planned with them this year as they are now old enough not to be a moaning nightmare on a long flight.

Titsflyingsouth · 17/03/2022 20:00

Caravan and motorhome holidays around Yorkshire mostly. Lot of good memories of Scarborough Smile

MinglingFlamingo · 17/03/2022 20:03

Camping holidays in France or the UK. Sometimes an all inclusive ina European beach resort. Sometimes a bit more further afield. Disney Florida, Caribbean or a Safari in an African country

Gotajobthrunepotism · 17/03/2022 20:07

Butlins, Blackpool, visiting family in the UK.

Also went to Holland, France, Belgium and Luxembourg with a local youth group.

And went to Spain too. By coach. All the way from aberdeen. The resort was full of British

MrsBerthaRochester · 17/03/2022 20:08

Blackpool once and we went to visit family in another Englisy town. Holidays abroad were just a pipe dream as we were a low income family. Also my mum was never interested in taking us on holiday, she left that to our grandparents.
We did do day trips to places like Ayr, Troon etc. A trip to the beach and a chippy tea was a real treat.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 17/03/2022 20:13

We did Kellingheath caravan park in Sheringham most years, but did go to Eurocamps in France twice and one big holiday where we went to Florida for 3 weeks when I was 11.

Trying to convince DH on Kellingheath as have lots of fond memories but he's not keen so far.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 17/03/2022 20:15

We went abroad once, to Malta when I was 5. Other than that it was camping in wales and a few crappy coach trips to Isle of Wight with mainly OAPs as my gran paid for us to go with her.

bigfatmeerkat · 17/03/2022 20:16

Spain / South of France package holidays - on a "luxury coach" - 2 days on a bus with one loo, then staying in tents or mobile homes with no aircon.
Loved it as a kid, but now insist on flying business class.
