Vegan as the default. Specifically slightly annoyed with the McPlant

I'm not vegan, I'm vegetarian.

I want a McPlant with proper (if American cheese slices can be called proper) cheese.

I would like to order a Big Mac, and sub out the burgers for the plant burgers!

Surely there are more people like me?

Vegan options being the default for vegans and vegetarians is very annoying. AIBU?

(No this isn't all I have to worry about in life before someone says it.)

I'm a veggie and not a fan of vegan cheese but I did enjoy the McPlant burger.

I'm generally very happy to eat vegan food - but I prefer vegan options without fake dairy products, like a 5 bean chilli or a chickpea and spinach curry. DH and I cook a lot of vegan meals at home along those lines.

We do eat some fake meat but generally prefer meals based on vegetables and pulses.

I miss the bean burgers which were everywhere when we first went veggie 11 years ago. Pretty much every pub did once, then falafel burgers took over and now fake meat burgers have taken over.

YABU. I’m vegetarian and I can’t tell the difference with the cheese at all. Fantastic burger

Is that you, Ronald? Grin

@AuntTwacky

Don't eat McDonald's? The so called plant burgers are full of artificial additives
Oh really? People do talk a lot of crap. And anyway, people do not eat in macdonalds because they want to eat something healthy.

Here are the ingredients of the macplant burger patty:

Water, Pea Protein (16%), Rapeseed Oil, Coconut Oil, Flavouring, Rice Protein, Stabiliser (Methyl Cellulose), Potato Starch, Apple Extract, Salt, Pomegranate Extract, Potassium Chloride, Concentrated Lemon Juice, Maize Vinegar, Yeast Extract, Carrot Powder, Emulsifier (Sunflower Lecithin), Colour (Beetroot Red), Maltodextrin

@EmmaH2022

again2020 “ I'm suprised how many veggies on here don't want to eat vegan”

Why though?

To clarify, .i mean why do you think we'd want to eat vegan. If we wanted to be vegan, we'd be vegan.

I prefer not to eat meat, mostly due to texture.. I'm still very happy with eggs and dairy. I'm another one who is more likely to eat meat than pick from a purely vegan selection.

LynetteScavo · 15/03/2022 17:05

Just ask them to swap the vegan cheese for regular cheese.

Confused

They won't. If the odd restaurant does it is against McDonald's rules.
EeeICouldRipATissue · 15/03/2022 17:19

It's bad enough being an allergy sufferer without picking and swapping vegan cheese as you wish.
Places mess up occasionally and this just further complicates things, or makes people think actual vegans are just being fussy and surely can just eat a bit of cheese?! Hmm

AffIt · 15/03/2022 17:22

I'm a lacto-ovo vegetarian. One of the reasons I stopped eating meat was because it gave me bother with my digestion - something I find in common with a lot of vegan cheese avatars, many of which contain coconut oil, which also seems to be a trigger.

Please just let me eat what I want!

takealettermsjones · 15/03/2022 17:29

What is a lacto-ovo vegetarian?

cannaethink · 15/03/2022 17:31

Another veggie here getting pissed off with all the veggie options becoming vegan! Fine (or acceptable!) if it’s actual veg, beans, lentils etc but not when it’s fake meat.

Doesn't eat meat or fish, but eats eggs and dairy.

Vegetarians don't eat meat or fish either though?! Confused
So what's the difference?
(Not a dig, just curious!)

I think it's a bit of a legacy thing, from when veganism was uncommon, but you still got different 'flavours' of vegetarianism, so some wouldn't eat dairy etc.

A vegetarian, when I was in my 20s. Now it’s all specific labels for everything

I have issues digesting it too. I really hope original vegetarianism makes a comeback. I’m supposed to be buying lunch for a friend this weekend. He’s a high protein meat guy and the only good options for him mostly feature a roasted cauliflower for me. 🙄
LynetteScavo · 15/03/2022 18:51

I better not tell you where my DC work then @Ducksurprise Grin They do an "ask me" all the time- people ask for all sorts of things, and they give it to them.

personally I'd be happy if they just gave me Diet Coke when I ask for it, not full fat. I can taste the difference

jennytheonionslayer · 16/03/2022 00:19

I could have wrote your post, YADNBU

IJoinedJustForThisThread · 16/03/2022 00:40

I tried the McPlant burger a couple of weeks ago. I managed the first mouthful but had to spit out the second mouthful - not only did it taste like meat it had a meaty texture and it made me feel sick.

Aw see, that's why I love it - so realistically meaty tasting!

I am not vegan, I am not even veggie but eat a lot of veggie food. I'm happy to have vegan anything EXCEPT vegan cheese. I have also noticed that there aren't really veggie options anymore, it's all vegan which means fake rubbish cheese!

ThePoorWeeDonkey · 16/03/2022 01:30

I agree. The same is happening in lots of places. I want real cheese, or pizza base or whatever just not the meat. I hope they manage to catch themselves on.

Order vegetarian pizza instead of vegan then Confused I don’t know why it’s so difficult.
