Vegan as the default. Specifically slightly annoyed with the McPlant

I'm not vegan, I'm vegetarian.

I want a McPlant with proper (if American cheese slices can be called proper) cheese.

I would like to order a Big Mac, and sub out the burgers for the plant burgers!

Surely there are more people like me?

Vegan options being the default for vegans and vegetarians is very annoying. AIBU?

(No this isn't all I have to worry about in life before someone says it.)

Bloody hell I'm in the minority here.
I love vegan cheese, I could eat a block in one sitting. I like fake meats. The Mcplant has changed my life as I used to get dragged into McDonald's by my omni partner and daughter and hate the only thing I could eat. Not anymore Grin

I'm suprised how many veggies on here don't want to eat vegan. I'd love to be vegan and have been in the past, but find it hard to keep to when you live with people who aren't vegan.
I welcome any vegan options and am happy to eat less dairy whenever I can. I thought that would be an more universally shared view amongst veggies. It clearly isn't. Eyes opened!

DrCoconut · 14/03/2022 21:30

I want McDonald's to introduce a gluten free bread roll. They have them in other countries. It's crap having to get a burger with no bread and still pay the same. I waited years for decent meat free options to come out and then got diagnosed with bloody coeliac disease meaning I now can't eat most of them 😫

HeckyPeck · 14/03/2022 21:32

@ButtockUp

I feel so sorry for vegetarians. They've been marginalised, in shops and restaurants for decades then all of a sudden some loud vegans come along and have hijacked the tiny market that vegetarians so desperately wanted to have as their own.
Speaking as a vegetarian, I have to disagree. There are so many more options now than there used to be back in the day.

The fact that there are more vegans and veggies, means I can even get a vegetarian hotdog at Thorpe Park. Back in the olden days I'd have to bring my own crappy cheese sandwich!

Also I didn't desperately want a market to have as my own. I just wanted choice, which there is plenty of now 😊

Moogdroog · 14/03/2022 21:35

YANBU. I've been vegetarian all my life I eat a bit of dairy but I don't eat eggs. I eat a lot of vegan food but I am mightily cheesed off (pardon the pun) with all the veggie options being replaced with vegan ones.. and its all horrid fake-food.
It feels like I've lived through all the phases - sod all options, then eggy ones, then it got a bit better, now it's all going downhill.

beinggreen · 14/03/2022 21:38

I hate this so much too.

I'm a vegetarian, which means I don't eat meat.

I'm not a sodding vegan.

There is some vegan food that is nice, but most of it is made up of things I am allergic to. It is not a case of all vegetarians can eat vegan food. A lot of vegan food - especially fast Vegan food - contains a truck load of cashews and coconut oil.

Still, I suppose in time I'll end up losing weight due to the vegan revolution taking away all of my choices. Silver linings?

DrCoconut · 14/03/2022 21:40

@AncientofMuMu I give you the gluten free "cornetto" as an example of your point 😭

ErickBroch · 14/03/2022 21:41

Lol! Just Eat is a shite platform. I can't even remove toppings from Pizza Hut. Nothing to do with vegan/veggie debate - the app is crap

takealettermsjones · 14/03/2022 22:01

@IchabodCrane I know 😆 we are on the same page. I do want my veggies to taste like veggies! That's what I was saying.

Mediocrates · 14/03/2022 22:04

YANBU. I want real cheese and mayo with my fake meat, dammit!

Elphame · 14/03/2022 22:11

The fact that there are more vegans and veggies, means I can even get a vegetarian hotdog at Thorpe Park. Back in the olden days I'd have to bring my own crappy cheese sandwich!

Now I'd far rather have the cheese sandwich personally!

Much of the food I eat is vegan and I would have no problem with the vegan offerings if they were actually real food rather than the lab created plant based concoctions.

It's perfectly possible to make some lovely vegan food out of real food but all the restaurants would rather just buy some frozen vegan fake meat burgers as a quick cheap and easy lazy option.

I used to dislike tofu but had a delicious meal in a good Chinese restaurant. They told me they made their own rather than buying it in. I bought some soya beans and had a go. It's now one of my favourites

belimoo · 14/03/2022 22:16

YANBU I was complaining about this earlier tonight!

I just want a good old fashioned veggie burger with real cheese on it. Why is that so impossible to find?!

WeirdlyKind · 14/03/2022 22:17

@kerosene20

YABU in that particular example. The Mcplant is indiscernible from real cheese. I’m a vegetarian. Ask to swap a Big Mac with the mcplant patties if you want this?
You can't. They cost different amounts and there's no option for it on the till.
WeirdlyKind · 14/03/2022 22:18

Also the mayo on the chicken sandwich is the vegan one now too

OnTopOfThePiano · 14/03/2022 22:23

@streamee I don’t know how to tell you this… but my local mc ds let me swap the Big Mac patties for the plant ones and honestly it was the best thing ever! Blush I wish it was a proper menu item.

FOJN · 14/03/2022 22:23

Just come over to the dark side. The bacon is lovely grin

I've been vegetarian for 30 years and not planning to change but this made me laugh.

Florenz · 14/03/2022 22:24

Vegan fake meat/cheese etc is disgusting IMO. What's wrong with just eating vegetables?

OnTopOfThePiano · 14/03/2022 22:26

@Florenz why vegetables do you recommend at McDonald’s?

OnTopOfThePiano · 14/03/2022 22:26

Why = what Wink

Looubylou · 14/03/2022 22:27

YANBU - I find a lot of vegan stuff dreadful, and there is a definite move to offering vegan but not veggie. It's the texture that usually turns me off. Even vegan quorn is rubbish compared to normal quorn. If you have been vegetarian for nearly 30 years it is very frustrating to feel limited by what I suspect will be a passing fad for the majority of vegans. I might be proved wrong of course.

Florenz · 14/03/2022 22:34
@Florenz why vegetables do you recommend at McDonald’s?
Carrot bag.

Errorschach · 14/03/2022 22:34

@Dguu6u

You are right though. Worst thing ever is vegan pastry. Greggs has a vegan sausage roll. The sausage is nice, the roll tastes like cardboard. There is no vegetarian option Angry
The Greggs pastry on the vegan sausage roll is foul. Please blame its foulness on Greggs, not on its being vegan. Vegan pastry doesn't have to be so sweet.
JustDanceAddict · 14/03/2022 22:38

I’ve been saying this for ages re vegan vs veggie. So annoying.
Burger King have the veggie equivalent of a whopper and a vegan burger too, so if they can do it….

inappropriateraspberry · 14/03/2022 22:38

Yes! I want eggs and cheese, please! I want the option of Brie without bacon, and a veggie burger with real cheddar cheese!

goawaystormy · 14/03/2022 22:40

OP I understand your frustration and raise you one.

I am coeliac - I can't eat gluten yet I do eat everything else. And every sodding supermarket collates its 'free from range' all into one. I can get a sodding gluten free pizza with regular cheese because they make it dairy free as well - and dairy free cheese is shit! I went to Sainsbury's last week after a long day at work looking for a gluten free lasagne (ready meal, ive had it tons of times before), only to find they've replaced their gluten free lasagnes with fucking free from everything vegan lasagnes - I want beef! And ontop of that because it's got the vegan premium on it it was fucking £5.50!

DirtyDancing · 14/03/2022 22:50

I can't eat dairy products but eat meat so my preference would be vegan cheese with a proper meat burger. I can do it at say pizza express, order a vegan pizza and add on pepperoni. It does get some strange looks, but basically dietary preferences and intolerances are a hybrid of strangeness so it should all be flexible
