Vegan as the default. Specifically slightly annoyed with the McPlant

I'm not vegan, I'm vegetarian.

I want a McPlant with proper (if American cheese slices can be called proper) cheese.

I would like to order a Big Mac, and sub out the burgers for the plant burgers!

Surely there are more people like me?

Vegan options being the default for vegans and vegetarians is very annoying. AIBU?

(No this isn't all I have to worry about in life before someone says it.)

@Tornado70

I’m really pleased that vegetarian options are reducing and are being replaced by plant-based options. Less animals are suffering. They still sell other vegetarian items if you really want to consume dairy or eggs. Oh, and veganism isn’t simply food. It’s a whole lifestyle approach.
A lifestyle approach that vegetarians haven't chosen to undertake.
ButtockUp · 14/03/2022 20:30

I feel so sorry for vegetarians.
They've been marginalised, in shops and restaurants for decades then all of a sudden some loud vegans come along and have hijacked the tiny market that vegetarians so desperately wanted to have as their own.

RJnomore1 · 14/03/2022 20:31

We really need to knock this exclusionary attitude to veganism/ vegetarianism on the head. If everyone are a little less meat it would help the environment. For most people who aren’t let’s say kindly enthusiastically commited to the vegan ideal, somethibg that helps them do that is a good thing. Your zealotry does not make my contribution meaningless. Everyone embracing small change is better than a limited number bring fanatical (not referring to the eating habits here but to the evangelist approach and the desire to remove choice from others).

Lopoem · 14/03/2022 20:31

I was just glad they started doing a vegetarian/vegan option that wasn't the vegetable mush they usually serve. I have tried the McPlant once and thought it was good, didn't even notice the cheese. A plant based Big Mac would be amazing and maybe they will have more options over time, it is a knew item. I guess it will depend how popular it is.

CamVegOut · 14/03/2022 20:32

Vegan here. I hate all the fake meat and cheese options. Please give me a bean burger and something with vegetables please 🙏 vegan cheese is over prowering and mostly terrible (wasnt a massive cheese lover as a vegetarian anyway) but despise those fake meaty things. You are not unreasonable. I wonder is it my middle agedness that goves me the range with them 🤣😂

RockinHorseShit · 14/03/2022 20:36

YADNBU. I hit this yesterday with a pub roast. I don't eat meat, but I am not, nor want to be vegan. I want cheese with my bloody Wellington, not ratatouille with a bit of pastry stuck on topHmm

MinniesAndMickeysNeedCounting · 14/03/2022 20:38

Ynbu, it wouldn't be difficult for them to have a vegetarian version and a vegan version, it would only be swapping out the cheese and mayo.
i think if you're not vegan, vegan cheese can be unpleasant. When I was transitioning from veggie to vegan I decided I'd rather go without than eat vegan cheese but once I hadn't eaten dairy cheese for a while I found I liked a few of the alternative cheeses but if you're vegetarian and eating cheese the vegan stuff is never gonna feel like a acceptable alternative.

TatianaBis · 14/03/2022 20:38

VU as McD’s is minging whether or not the cheese is real or fake.

InkySquid · 14/03/2022 20:39

I got the ‘vegetarian’ breakfast which also doubled as the gluten free/vegan/low fat breakfast. It was literally a fruit plate…with a side of fruit plate.

This is pretty much always the case. I always take my own food.

But as much as the one option to cover vegan/gf/vegi is annoying it's considerably less annoying than gluten free options being replaced by vegan options which aren't gluten free.

Ddot · 14/03/2022 20:43

Give me cheese

Hellorhighwater · 14/03/2022 20:50

I find it annoying. I do eat meat, but I don’t like to eat factory farmed stuff, so I quite like veggie food when out. I have quite a lot issues with vegan food (ironically sustainability, carbon footprint and animal welfare), and it seems very highly processed, so I don’t really want to support it, or eat it.

These days, though, I’m a Povertarian and I eat what’s cheap.

Villagewaspbyke · 14/03/2022 20:55

Totally agree- weird cheese ruins it.

Gotajobthrunepotism · 14/03/2022 21:01

I’ve been veggie for 27 years. Don’t mind vegan food at all.... if it’s actual proper food made of of veg and pulses... but absolutely hate fake cheese and fake burgers. Absolutely disgusting.

Quackpot · 14/03/2022 21:01

I'm an omnivore, used to always choose vegetarian options when eating out because I'm really fussy about meat. Now it's all bastardised with foul tasting smelly fake cheese. Rotten.
There's so many lovely recipes that are both vegetarian and vegan that don't need to have fake over processed alternative things on.
What happened to veggie burgers with actually vegetables in them and nice relish on the top not yukky cheese made from coconut farts.
What happened to meat free chilli-why does it now always have pretend meat in it.
Nice pasta dishes.
Nice pies.
Flavoursome curries.

I've started getting fish. So literally all this vegan stuff in restaurants is making me eat more animals, not less, all because of vomit scented fake cheese. Just leave it off. Or make it an optional extra.
Could go on. But I'm rambling so I'll save you from that 🤣

EmmaH2022 · 14/03/2022 21:02

I’m with #bringbackvegetarian

It’s very rare for me to eat out. Last three times my only option, bar salad or curry, was a plant burger. I miss things like mushroom risotto, quiche, veggie pasta, cheese, eggs. The vegan options are so dull.

Tulipomania · 14/03/2022 21:03

Annoys me too OP.

And don't get me started on gluten free.

DS is coeliac, and often the GF version is also vegan. And therefore tastes disgusting.

Gotajobthrunepotism · 14/03/2022 21:03

At Christmas my lovely MIL had served up a “beef” Wellington from M&S. It had the most hideous texture and I had to discreetly put it into a hankie: couldn’t eat the rest of it

whynotwhatknot · 14/03/2022 21:03

forget that why havent they ever brought back the breakfast bagel theres whole threads about it on twitter

Gotajobthrunepotism · 14/03/2022 21:06

For example. This is made of real food, is vegan, very cheap to make, and actually tastes lovely

True, although some of us with less commitment if forced to jump one way or the other will go for the meat Grin
IchabodCrane · 14/03/2022 21:13

@takealettermsjones

Because there are a lot of dishes with a mix of meat and veggie anyway? All they're doing is removing the meat, rather than attempting a poor substitute.

Often true, but I mean that in making e.g. vegetable samosas they don't use Quorn mince, they just make a vegetable filling.

Ah I see. Probably because those cultures have been vegetarian for hundreds of years. It's not a special 'veggie menu'. It's normal food. Not harming living things is a key principle of religions requiring vegetarianism which 'fake meat' would ruin.

Vegan food in the UK however seems to be about substituting meat. Which I found strange. Why don't you want your veggies to taste like veggies?

There are restaurants with 20+ meat and fish dishes on their menu though, with a couple of vegan options but no vegetarian.

YANBU, OP.

Tulipomania · 14/03/2022 21:18

I don't want to eat fake meat or cheese.

I can make a great beetroot & chick pea burger.

If I'm out I love a good falafel.

LimeSegment · 14/03/2022 21:24

I think this could be an issue with the just eat app ordering system.

I haven't tried the mcplant myself so I could be wrong, but I used to work there and the register and self ordering machine let you do any swap/removal /addition. Even things which would leave us like Confused, like adding four extra meat patties. You can remove the bun totally, remove meat and replace with chicken or fish patty, remove meat totally, add salad, add five different sauces, order cheese seperately, anything really. The register calculates the new price so being more or less expensive isn't an issue.

LimeSegment · 14/03/2022 21:28

I've noticed ordering other restaurants on just eats/door dash/uber eats, you don't always get all the options the store can provide.
