Vegan as the default. Specifically slightly annoyed with the McPlant

I'm not vegan, I'm vegetarian.

I want a McPlant with proper (if American cheese slices can be called proper) cheese.

I would like to order a Big Mac, and sub out the burgers for the plant burgers!

Surely there are more people like me?

Vegan options being the default for vegans and vegetarians is very annoying. AIBU?

(No this isn't all I have to worry about in life before someone says it.)

@Dguu6u

You are right though. Worst thing ever is vegan pastry. Greggs has a vegan sausage roll. The sausage is nice, the roll tastes like cardboard. There is no vegetarian option Angry
I know! I was so annoyed that the pastry was vegan. Pastry needs proper butter

I'm vegan and love the McPlant burger. If there were options to swap out the cheese etc I'd be concerned about the risk of contamination or of the meat option being mixed up with the vegan one.
Maybe it's just been too long since I've had proper cheese but I thought the cheese in the McPlant was great.

@asfuckedascanbe1224

YANBU at all!!! I feel you SO much!

I don't eat McDonalds but this Vegan default thing seems to be the case I most places now!

I love vegetarian food and vegetarian burgers, and I want mine with normal cheese, but they have all been replaced with a different vegan horrible bread, cheese that isn't cheese and etc.

It annoys me to the core.

You do realise that the vast majority of bread is vegan right?

Or are you confusing vegan with gluten free?

2MinuteRice · 14/03/2022 19:55

@Scarecrowrowboat

Yanbu, I've been veggie since I was little and the last 10 years had gradually been seeing vegetarian options added to menus rather than having to get chips and a side salad. Now so many places just do a vegan option instead. Pubs in particular frequently seem to be jackfruit burger with vegan cheese, hate the texture of jackfruit, it's what I imagine meat is like to chew.
This!

I always used to get chips and a vegetable side.
Sometimes the only choice was chips with macaroni cheese. Tasty as I love cheese but not necessarily what I want to have every time I go out.

Recently I've found that I'm picking sides again as its meat or vegan.
So over jackfruit.

@MissDollyMix

YANBU. So many of my veggie friends are getting annoying with phasing out of vegetarian food in favour of vegan.
Yep, that's me too!
streamee · 14/03/2022 19:57

@EmpressSuiko

Did you ask at the counter or only try using the automated service? Can’t see them refusing to swap the cheese over if you specifically ask them to.
Just eat

McDonalds still sell their veggie finger things as far as I know. If you don’t want your veggie option to taste like meat can you not just order those? They do them in a burger or wrap.

streamee · 14/03/2022 19:58

@YahBooFucks

Totally agree, OP. I also, totally unreasonably, can't help but feel annoyed that I had to put up with totally shit and samey vegetarian options for years and now this vegan revolution is happening, there's this explosion of meat-free choice. I realise I benefit from this but I just feel annoyed they couldn't do it before.

Re - the McPlant, however, it is surprisingly good, despite the (normally absolutely meal-ruiningly revolting) vegan cheese. I was equally pissed off when they went all vegan nazi and told me I couldn't swap nice, normal, lovely dairy cheese for the gross vegan stuff but it turned out I really couldn't tell the difference. I think this says more about the crapness of the ordinary cheese than the quality of the vegan version, though.

I could definitely tell the difference

@JinglingHellsBells

I don't understand anyone eating anything from McDs. It's all low quality, over-processed, awful food. It falls a long way short of healthy even if it is made with plants and not meat. White processed bread and ultra processed 'vegan' burgers. No thanks.
Not everyone wants to eat healthily 100% of the time and also McD food often just fills a purpose when you're out and about and need something quick.

Surely it’s not that difficult to understand that 1) people have different food preferences and 2) not everyone’s criteria for every meal is whether it meets a particular definition of healthy or not.
bumbledeedum · 14/03/2022 20:01

Not RTFT but glad it's not just me this is pissing off. Not specifically the mcplant McDonald's thing but lumping me as a veggie in with vegans. They're very different choices and vegan cheese which is in my opinion crap is one of the reasons I'm not vegan.

mindutopia · 14/03/2022 20:01

Yes, it’s annoying. Once on a long haul flight (and tbf, this was 15 years ago!) I got the ‘vegetarian’ breakfast which also doubled as the gluten free/vegan/low fat breakfast. It was literally a fruit plate…with a side of fruit plate. Hmm I was starving by the time I got off and probably would have eaten a bacon roll at that point!

Tornado70 · 14/03/2022 20:02

I’m really pleased that vegetarian options are reducing and are being replaced by plant-based options. Less animals are suffering.
They still sell other vegetarian items if you really want to consume dairy or eggs.
Oh, and veganism isn’t simply food. It’s a whole lifestyle approach.

But it’s not really these days - or the new vegans wouldn’t wear leather, or eat in McDs, avoid honey and silk, not keep pets (or have vegan ones), ride horses, have jabs… I had a relative who was a very right on vegan as a student and it was pretty intense.

sabbii · 14/03/2022 20:05

last weekend I had a McPlant but with all the normal non-vegan bits (vegan cheese is not to my liking). They said NO probs whatsoever although it takes a couple of minutes longer

BowerOfBramble · 14/03/2022 20:06

I agree with this. The problem for me is that turning vegan products into ones that look and taste a bit like meat/cheese necessitates adding a fucktonne of additives and strange colours.

I like vegan stuff that is naturally vegan eg veg curry, stir fry, roasted veg with falafel. But the vegan things in the menu now are usually fake meat, fake cheese etc and it’s sweet and samey. When your friend is having moules with garlic and white wine and you’re sitting in front of basically the nutritional equivalent of spaghetti hoops you feel a bit cheated.

@minipie

YANBU OP.

I am an omnivore but historically would often choose the vegetarian option just because it looked appealing (I love cheese). I know many omnivores who are the same.

However, vegan options never appeal to me at all. So the result of this shift to vegan options rather than vegetarian is that I am more likely to eat meat.

This is what happens with me. I like just a little meat so would typically order a vegetarian dish when out but now everywhere does vegan I'm more inclined to chose a meat dish.

I wonder if there are lots and lots of people like me who aren't vegetarian but would like very low meat dishes.

Yeah we know and it’s one we haven’t signed up for. If you actually cared about animals rather than annoying veggies you’d want another meat option to be replaced with a vegan meal, rather than having the one vegetarian dish become vegan and the same number of meat options remain.
NoHunsHereHun · 14/03/2022 20:17

I’m neither vegan nor veg but LOVE the McPlant and am furious that you can’t have it as a Big Mac. The ‘cheese’ I’m less fussed about as it seems to be better than others I’ve tried.

collieresponder88 · 14/03/2022 20:19

Mcplant burger is really lovely

Yep same here.

Maybe add a note to just eat.

Everywhere else I've had vegan burgers from has always let me swap for regular cheese when I've asked too.

I'm confused. Vegetarian is plant based? Or do you mean exclusively plant derived when you say plant "based"?
Dindundundundeeer · 14/03/2022 20:23

I mainly eat veggie, but vegan is so fun free, I end up eating fish when out.
