Dumped for eating Maltesers

Malteesser · 03/03/2022 22:39

Been seeing someone for a few weeks. We went to cinema last night and he bought popcorn and I bought a big bag of maltesers. I opened them when we sat down and began eating them. He said “why don’t you wait until the film starts?” So I just laughed and said “too tempting” as a joke. He seemed irritated and said something like “you won’t have any left by time the film starts”. This got my back up a bit and I just carried on as I was. I finished the bag around 10 minutes into the film. I saw him watching me and felt his disapproval Hmm but why?? It didn’t effect him, he had his popcorn. He was really grumpy throughout the film and afterwards was quite off with me. We were meant to be going for something to eat but he said he wasn’t really in the mood and would be heading home.

Before I went to bed I text him asking if I’d done something to upset him and he replied “I don’t think this will work out, it’s nothing personal x” Hmm I replied “ok no worries”.

It’s been bugging me all day as before we sat down in the cinema he was absolutely fine!!! We were laughing and joking etc, no bad feeling at all and he literally changed as soon as we sat down.

Have I been dumped for bad Malteser etiquette?!?

Goodness he sounds like he has some issues. Definitely a lucky escape! Enjoy your chocolate however and whenever you want!

Sidge · 04/03/2022 07:52

I doubt he’s got misophonia, it’s more likely he’s just a massive bell end.

Gluttony isn’t attractive, but eating a large bag of Maltesers in what, 15-20 minutes is hardly gluttonous.

When I was dating I nearly wrote a book called Dodged A Bullet - can I add your story @Malteesser? 😂

girlmom21 · 04/03/2022 07:55

He was lucky. I'd have finished the malteasers then gone in for his popcorn.

Foreverlexicon · 04/03/2022 08:05

I have misophonia (although not as severe as previous posters thankfully) and I wouldn’t dump someone for this because I’m not a twat.

Most I do is ask DP to eat lunch somewhere else if she comes and eats it on the sofa when I’m doing something quiet.

WouldIwasShookspeared · 04/03/2022 08:08

Sounds like he got the "ick" I've read about on here .
Lots of posts from women who all of a sudden for no reason find everything the bloke does really irritating.

monkeysox · 04/03/2022 08:13

Did you have chocolate all over you hands and face and then wipe your hands on him? If not he's a dick

CharacterForming · 04/03/2022 08:15

Have you never seen the threads on "most trivial reasons why you've ever dumped someone"? He'd fit right in.

You'll never know whether he was a controlling arse or he was already on the verge of the ick and the Maltesers pushed him over the edge. It will remain one of life's mysteries.

Inthesameboatatmo · 04/03/2022 08:17

Lucky escape op. I'd rather have a bag of malteasers than that prick any day .

ChipButtyCurrySauce · 04/03/2022 08:17

I really really want maltesers now.

The reason would be them realizing what they've settled for and want better
NewtoHolland · 04/03/2022 08:20

So his relationship dynamic is clearly critical parent!
Well dodged OP.
In fact I suggest we all deploy the malteser cinema test from now on!

Person123456 · 04/03/2022 08:22

Isnt the ick more of a high school girls thing? people constantly say that on here

Women on here get the ick all the time. Why can’t a man? This is obviously over more than a bag of maltesers...
HangingOver · 04/03/2022 08:29

How do people with misophonia ever have relationships if the sound of someone eating makes you angry with that person?

I try not to be in the room with DP when he's eating and I'm not.... It's not so bad when I'm eating too. When we were WFH I was based the kitchen and he'd come in and and make snacks periodically and stand beside me chatting and chewing and it made me want to stab him (lovingly) Grin Luckily he knows what sets me off now and doesn't take it personally.

HOWEVER I don't think that's what happened here... If that were me I'd be sitting there praying for it to be over as soon as possible not encouraging the person to string it out for longer!

MaryAndHerNet · 04/03/2022 08:33

What a total twat.

Everyone knows the rules.
You but malteasers, the toner starts... If the bag isnt opened within 3minites and 42 seconds, they go bad...
Why 3 minutes and 42 seconds?

Don't ask me, I don't make the rules.. I just strictly adhere to them...

😜

WibbleWobbleWibble · 04/03/2022 08:35

Now that you have discovered the "malteaser test" you can use in on all future dates to screen out weirdos!!!

NightmareSlashDelightful · 04/03/2022 08:37

Mix Maltesers and popcorn together, and thank me later.

Person123456 · 04/03/2022 08:38

That actually sounds really good, im going to try that later
jezzyj · 04/03/2022 08:41

@Lockheart

It's odd, a woman can dump a man for any reason at all, and it's absolutely fine (of course).

But this guy is a twat / pillock / controlling?

I'm sorry you were dumped OP, it always sucks regardless.

I agree. It's confusing and totally random, but I don't see the control aspect. He didn't confiscate the Maltesers and hand them out one by one... and he left the relationship entirely so clearly not that bothered about controlling op's life
rainbowandglitter · 04/03/2022 08:41

Maybe he was horrified that you'd eaten a whole big bag of Maltesers in such a short space of time. There are people out there like that.

HailAdrian · 04/03/2022 08:43

I haven't been on a first date in a while but this is why eating makes me uncomfortable, I swear some men think women just shouldn't.

jezzyj · 04/03/2022 08:43

@Person123456

The ick is more like when someone does something benign like new haircut and you go off them completely and everything they do pisses you off because you're not attracted at all, it's not like a 'realising your worth' thing.

HELLITHURT · 04/03/2022 08:44

@NightmareSlashDelightful

Mix Maltesers and popcorn together, and thank me later.
Does that mean you use sweet popcorn?

YABU, salted is the best! Grin

MajesticallyAwkward · 04/03/2022 08:46

What a strange like to draw... lucky dodge OP!

Cinema etiquette can be a big thing for some people but he just sounds like a controlling arse that was more bothered you didn't immediately stop because he said so.

Once my DH picked up a bag of bugles at the cinema and was confused I suggested the noisiest crisps possible maybe weren't the best choice for the cinema... especially for a noisy eater. It took a few minutes but I managed to talk him down to something less crunchy, was still half gone before the film started though 😂 if it had been a first date it's 50/50 I'd have just walked away
