Dumped for eating Maltesers

Been seeing someone for a few weeks. We went to cinema last night and he bought popcorn and I bought a big bag of maltesers. I opened them when we sat down and began eating them. He said “why don’t you wait until the film starts?” So I just laughed and said “too tempting” as a joke. He seemed irritated and said something like “you won’t have any left by time the film starts”. This got my back up a bit and I just carried on as I was. I finished the bag around 10 minutes into the film. I saw him watching me and felt his disapproval Hmm but why?? It didn’t effect him, he had his popcorn. He was really grumpy throughout the film and afterwards was quite off with me. We were meant to be going for something to eat but he said he wasn’t really in the mood and would be heading home.

Before I went to bed I text him asking if I’d done something to upset him and he replied “I don’t think this will work out, it’s nothing personal x” Hmm I replied “ok no worries”.

It’s been bugging me all day as before we sat down in the cinema he was absolutely fine!!! We were laughing and joking etc, no bad feeling at all and he literally changed as soon as we sat down.

Have I been dumped for bad Malteser etiquette?!?

YABU for buying your snacks from the cinema. They’re bloody expensive! You’d be better off going to Tesco first.
In other news, you had a lucky escape. Too right, it wouldn’t have worked out….

spotcheck · 03/03/2022 22:48
  1. he saved you from the twat that he is
  2. you'll amaze people for the rest of your life with this story : 'he dumped you for eating maltesers?!?' 'yep, maltesers'

You can embellish as you go along..' I mean, I could see his point if I had been eating twiglets or licorice all-sorts, but maltesers'??!!!'

☺️

MiddleClassProblem · 03/03/2022 22:48

Also I’m a little disappointed you didn’t just tip your head back and go for it 🤣

HairyScaryMonster · 03/03/2022 22:48

Maybe he was worried your 'lack of restraint' with maltesers would leech into other areas of life Shock

JackieQueen · 03/03/2022 22:48

You're better off with the bag of Maltesers!

TheSnowyOwl · 03/03/2022 22:49

I bet he had overwhelming food envy that you had Maltesers and he didn’t.

Rno3gfr · 03/03/2022 22:49

Can you imagine what the rest of your life would have looked like if you’d settled down with the cinema etiquette Nazi? Lucky escape.

ClemFandangoo · 03/03/2022 22:50

Lucky escape OP, before you know it he’d be telling you your portions are too big, you eat too fast and ‘you shouldn’t be eating XYZ’ I’ve been there!

GabriellaMontez · 03/03/2022 22:50

Controlling and rigid.. a lucky escape!

JollyAndBright · 03/03/2022 22:51

@frostedfruit

I think he was annoyed that you didn't stop eating when he asked you to. It's the first little sign that he expects you to do things the way he wants or he'll show his disapproval. There'll be more, and worse, where that came from. Dont hang around!
1000% this.

He expected you to comply with his request and got visibly annoyed and sulky when you didn’t.
If this is how he behaves after a few weeks can you imagine how controlling he will likely be in an established relationship.

That one of the biggest red flags I think I’ve ever heard of.

You’ve has a lucky escape imo.

Lolliepoppie · 03/03/2022 22:51

Did you offer him a Malteser? Did he offer you popcorn? I would be put out if my DH munched his way through a big bag of maltesers without offering me one.

KimCheese · 03/03/2022 22:51

@BabyTurtIe

Sounds like it was the last straw, doubt it was over this sorry but sounds like he was already planning on dumping you and every little thing you do is irritating to him.
Bit harsh! Not sure you needed to commit that to writing.

@AlisonDonut - we are one

Momicrone · 03/03/2022 22:52

Assuming it was a small bag

Midlifemusings · 03/03/2022 22:52

He probably has misophonia and the chomping of malteasers in his ear without the background sound of the movie to block it out was putting him over the edge.

Or he’s just a pillock.
BabyTurtIe · 03/03/2022 22:54

Well it’s the truth, he obviously didn’t dump her over a bag of maltesers

LawnFever · 03/03/2022 22:54

Sounds like he had serious potential to be controlling, what a weirdo!

Tomorrow go and buy yourself a huge bag of malteasers and scoff them all day at your own leisure Grin

KimCheese · 03/03/2022 22:54

I reckon pillock

TokyoTen · 03/03/2022 22:54

Stick to Maltesers and no bloke in future! At least you won't have to share!

ClemFandangoo · 03/03/2022 22:55

@BabyTurtIe

No he dumped her because she didn’t comply. He wants a compliant woman.
Bluelillies · 03/03/2022 22:55

I once got dumped for wearing ugg boots
I’d arranged to meet him but I had a knackered ankle and they where the only footwear I could wear at the time
We met and within seconds he started screaming at me for being ‘chavvy’ and ‘cheap’
I walked away-and the next day he texted to demand a shag
I told him I was up for it but I can only shag while wearing uggs-they turn me on in a way no man ever could

Never heard from him again

PeakyBlender · 03/03/2022 22:55

Ask him. Just for the lols then report back.

Fernandina · 03/03/2022 22:56

What an arse. Good riddance.

I want maltesers now

Awrite · 03/03/2022 22:56

Maltesers are my favourite cinema sweets. You have good taste.

WhereYouLeftIt · 03/03/2022 22:56

Not dumped, dodged a bullet.
