Hypothetical but if you have a DS aged 16-25 would they join up in the event of the government requesting volunteers to go and fight in Ukraine. If they did would you try and stop them. I have hear stories about so many young men in Ukraine volunteering and it got me wondering what would young British men do?

So that includes those who fought against the Nazis, who fought against ISIS to stop their mothers and sisters being enslaved, those who are fighting in Ukraine now to stop their country being subjugated, democracy ended, and the Russians fulfilling their "kill lists" of government officials?

There's a certain level of idiocy beyond which you can't reason with. It would involve going right back to teach concepts that most of us had grasped by the end of primary school.

In the case of this one, before you even got to history, geopolitics and concepts such as casus belli, you'd need to begin with basic logic and reasoning.

@DearlyBeloathed may you never have occasion to realise just how wrong you are. It's a testament of the comfortable life you lead that you've never had to fight to protect the things and people you love. Territory, resources, safety and security belong to those that can and will hold them against those who'd take them away. Diplomacy, trade, negotiation, international law can all help avoid wars but sometimes they fail.

In Ukraine they have learned the hard way what it's like to be dominated by Russia so they are prepared to fight. They've lived their whole lives overshadowed by it. Communist times are also within recent memory and there will have been awful stories from grandparents about WWII.

I don't think you can really compare anything in the UK to it.

By the way, I think the Ukrainian soldiers are female as well so you should be asking about daughters too.

Glad to see your perfectly fine with your children become murderers for a country that doesn't even know their name let alone give a damn about them because even if they lived they'd be on the street battling PTSD with no help from the very country they vowed to 'protect'

Boris didn't send me a birthday card so I've been feeling undervalued and crying myself to sleep; "a country that doesn't even know their name", what the hell are you smoking? We're all nobodies to government.

We are lucky enough to live in one of the wealthiest countries on earth, you can't seriously believe an invading force would bring utopia. Our democracy is certainly flawed but we enjoy a much better standard of living than most of the world's population. There are places where people don't even have easy access to clean drinking water whilst we have the luxury of flushing our loos with water clean enough to drink. In the western world you can do pretty much anything you like as long as you're not harming others. It's a freedom worth defending and I'm shocked you don't understand how valuable that is.

My DS aged 18 is really worried that he will be called up. I don’t know what to say to him

My best friend is terrified that her 15 year old will be called up. She is sure this is going to happen in time and her anxiety is rubbing off on her son who is now petrified.

@OverByYer do you live in Ukraine? Or is your DS a reservist? If the answer to both these questions is no be clear he will not and he is overreacting.

I don't suppose the people of Ukraine agree with it right now. However it's pretty much fight or roll over to Putin's regime and the loss of everything they hold dear ( like freedom to vote).
So what do you think they should do?

My son has joined up and has a great career in the RAF. He is not a murderer and I am very proud of him. I have not failed him and he is a wonderful son.
I am waiting to see if he will be sent east. I will be sad to see him go (if he does) but it is what he signed up for and he goes with my blessing. (Not that I could do anything about it.)

I had a father who was in the services. He was always away and there was always the risk he wouldn't come back. While I was proud of him, I'd much rather have had a father with a normal 9-5 who I could have seen more often and not worried about as a kid.

I wouldn't want my kids to be in the services. I wouldn't knowingly be in a relationship with a man who wanted to either.

But, if they wanted to, that's not up to me.
