would your DS join up

Hypothetical but if you have a DS aged 16-25 would they join up in the event of the government requesting volunteers to go and fight in Ukraine. If they did would you try and stop them. I have hear stories about so many young men in Ukraine volunteering and it got me wondering what would young British men do?

No ds is disabled, I was talking to my mum about it yesterday & it is the first time I am thankful that he is autistic, same for my nephew & I'm sure my brother is to old (& fat) to be of any use if civilians were to be conscripted.

It's not really a case of Ukraine people 'volunteering' to fight; they have been invaded. Civilians are being killed. Full fight or flight syndrome. The ones who stay and fight are defending their home and their way of life and democracy, and they know that help is not coming any time soon from other countries, apart from economic sanctions. The Ukrainian government has been urging people to join the territorial army for the last few months, including women. There is now no age limit on men joining up, friends and families will be joining together.

I don't think many British men would be falling over themselves to volunteer. There would be some who did, but I think most of them would stay here in the UK playing call of duty and sending each other memes about WW3. There is no emotional pull for them to go.

KloppsTeeth · 26/02/2022 01:49

My 16 year old has epilepsy so isn’t eligible to go. My youngest would be like Scrappy Doo, ready to twat the enemy. He’s talented with a Nerf gun so would adapt.
Maximum respect to those who are in, or who have family in the armed forces.

MintJulia · 26/02/2022 01:51

DS wouldn't join up for another country. I'm not sure he'd join up to protect Britain. But he's only 13 and doesn't have an aggressive bone in his body.

Anyway, he'd be much more use hacking Russian web sites and generally causing havoc.

I'd happily join up to protect the UK but then I'm old and grumpy and generally much less willing to take any shit from arrogant men..

From the Ukrainian president: "We'll defend our independence, our country, that's how it will go. Glory to our defenders, both male and female, Glory to Ukraine."

I can not imagine how it would feel to be in the Ukraine right now, I'm not sure if I would be making molotov cocktails ready to fight, or rocking in a corner of the metro station. The people fighting back are very brave.

NoSleepTil · 26/02/2022 03:01

Mine’s already in the Air Force

My DS is 19 and told me tonight he'd be on the first plane out there tomorrow if he could to help the Ukrainians - it frightened me to hear him say it but also made me quite proud in a way. He's so incensed about what's going on.

I'd be out there too with a pitchfork next to him if tanks were rolling into our town..

Still cannot believe this is happening

Monty27 · 26/02/2022 03:50

Absolutely not! It's all madness.
There's macho we have more missiles than you culture. Under no circumstances would I condone any person to stand there to be slain on behalf of megalomaniacs.
On any side.
God forgive them. Whatever God. Roman Greek Buddhist don't care.
My DC's weren't born to take away lives.
Sorry I'm quite upset about the shambolic state of UN failures

Deliberateplanning · 26/02/2022 03:54

We're all. Upset , hence typing at 4am

Tevion28 · 26/02/2022 04:12

OmgIThinkILikeYou · 26/02/2022 05:25

My ds is very young so not applicable, I don't think dp would pass a physical due to issues in his legs so if it came to it and someone had to go, it's gonna have to be me.

purplehairlady · 26/02/2022 05:36

No for Ukraine.

No for the U.K.

Sick of young men dying as "heroes" in wars started by crazy old men. The royals and politicians should send their kids to die first, instead they put our kids at the frontline and give their kids "senior strategic positions" out of harm's way.

PermanentTemporary · 26/02/2022 05:46

Hypothetically, yes he'd go if he had to and so would i for whatever a mid 50s woman could do - probably shoot my own toe off or something if given a weapon so I hope I'd be digging latrines. Volunteering is another issue; he's 18 so could make his own choice, I wouldn't stop him.

Norgie · 26/02/2022 05:49

Mine are already in the AF, including my DD. They all followed their fathers footsteps at 17.
Frontline fighting in a foreign country isn't new to them.

applesandoranges221 · 26/02/2022 05:49

Can I just point out that if - and I think it's most unlikely at this point - we got to this point, it wouldn't just be young people? Most likely to be 18-40/45, so a lot of people's DHs would be heading off as well.

Or we could all take a breath, perhaps?

Mumdiva99 · 26/02/2022 05:50

My strapping 14 year-old may want to defend his country. The problem I face as a mum is not the desire but the futility- send/allow your child to go.....they face brutality in hand to hand fighting....if they survive then all it takes is one megalomaniac with a nuclear weapon to wipe out millions..... And how can you be sure what the fighting is for...

We were at the RAF museum last week. My dad was telling me that was the base my grandfather went to when he volunteered during WW2. Grandad was a reservist and signed up as soon as we went to war. My dad was born 9 months later. Grandad didn't see him for 18 months because he was away.....sailing around Africa to be stationed in India. We can talk hypothetically here but will never really understand the sacrifices that were made. We will never really understand the fear the Ukranians are facing either and why they are staying to fight.

Katya213 · 26/02/2022 05:52

Judging by these snowflake comments on here, it's a good job Britain isn't at war. Sending your child back to Ireland? How cowardly!

Did you spend your previous life handling out white feathers? Not cowardly to want to protect your loved ones.
Hyenaormeercat · 26/02/2022 08:20

In Ukraine itself they are having to step up to protect themselves because they are under direct attack, we are not.

It's OK...as many don't have the ability to decide if they are male or female without constantly navel gazing l can't see how they will make snap life or death decisions either 😉 they are safe..

Seriously though conscription won't happen here, Putin isn't sending troops up Oxford St, this isn't a movie! Modern warfare requires trained soldiers....Tyler with his 2 grade 1 gcses and collection of grey trackies is safe...

Liverbird77 · 26/02/2022 08:36

No way. He is younger than that but he'd be on the first plane to Spain if the UK expected this. I am so grateful my kids have both nationalities!
I don't want my kids fighting in any war. They are not cannon fodder.

JustDanceAddict · 26/02/2022 08:38

No way! He has MH issues so would hopefully be exempt.

....and yet in Ukraine they are handing out guns to civilians and posting recipes for home made molotov cocktails...... Doesn't sound very modern to me.

mugoftea456 · 26/02/2022 08:54

My children are far to young.

My brothers/DP and DF would absolutely fight if the war came to home soil, or if we were from/in Ukraine.
