Fuck that

AnneLovesGilbert · 25/02/2022 22:33

Hadn’t heard of this but unless it’s to highlight fraud, bold, ugly fraud, and rank opportunism it’s a pointless pile of crap.

hopeishere · 25/02/2022 22:35

There's been other threads on this. I think the family need to let it all go now and get bath to the lives.

Classica · 25/02/2022 22:36

His family are the pits.

Let the whole Captain Tom rest. Only to be re-visited in an 'odd things that happened during the great pandemic when everyone was slightly mad' kind of way.

Girlmumdogmumboymum · 25/02/2022 22:36

No thanks. I think he and his family set out to capitalise on him raising money for the NHS.
I remember reading an article about how HD and his family decided he would do his walk around the garden, didn't seem to me to be much more than a way to grab attention.

Then he lapped up his free holiday to the carribean with his family, which ultimately ended his life.

And now his daughters been removed from his charity after trying to pay herself about £125000 a year from it.

I certainly wouldn't be taking part in a captain Tom day.

Don't understand the hatred here Confused I wouldn't be against this at all.

All was not as it seemed

Do you know what happened though?
AnneLovesGilbert · 25/02/2022 22:42

No hatred here. Some disgust and distaste. If you don’t know why then look it up.

100% this! It was kind of weird/heartwarming at the time but the longer it goes on, the stranger it gets. Don't even get me started on the weird video his daughter put up earlier this week.
Fudgein · 25/02/2022 22:43

I know his daughter seems to be unsavoury, however I have no issue with the memory of sir tom being celebrated. Like him or not he did what he could when he was not required to. I don't agree with sending money to his charity specifically but if it's a day to donate to a charity of your choice and celebrate his memory I would be all for it

britneyisfree · 25/02/2022 22:43

@sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea what did she do?

blueshoes · 25/02/2022 22:45

Sad to say, this is a most cynical money grab by his family. I wonder how much Captain Tom aka Sir Tom Moore was in on it. I won't be contributing to any causes raising funds in similar circumstances.

There are not enough checks and balances.

userxx · 25/02/2022 22:46

She knew what she was doing didn't she.

ClariceQuiff · 25/02/2022 22:46

There are just too many 'days' for this, that and the other now. It's become meaningless.

Casmama · 25/02/2022 22:53

I think he was a good man who lived a very long time and did a bit of walking for charity in his garden. That it earned as much as it did was a result of some serious promotion and catching the mood of a nation who wanted to donate a few quid to feel they were doing something in a situation where they had little control.
Nice he got a knighthood but now he has died his family seem a little opportunistic and I would be completely against this idea

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 25/02/2022 22:57

@britneyisfree The whole set up of the 'charity' has essentially been exposed as not much more than a grift created by his daughter & SiL. They paid themselves more in 'consultancy fees' than they donated to charity. It became public this week, and his daughter posted a very odd video of herself (seemingly filmed on holiday) saying how difficult it's all been, and thanking people for their support. She didn't actually address why the charity paid out £125k for consultancy fees, nor why her husband sent out a press release before Captain Tom even started doing laps of the garden. It all seems rather suspicious...

Northernlurker · 25/02/2022 22:57

Nope

RichardMarxisinnocent · 25/02/2022 23:08

I opened this thread thinking it was about a Captain called Tom Day and was wondering who he is and what he's done to merit and thread on MN. I'll go and Google to educate myself about what's happened with the Captain Tom Moore charity.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 25/02/2022 23:33

I couldn't give less of a shit about how Captain Tom Moore's family think I should be acting or thinking.
They & he are completely irrelevant to me.

Fangdango · 25/02/2022 23:39

To be fair - the money Captain Tom raised with all that walking went to charity.

The Captain Tom Foundation that his family set up later to raise more funds is the one paying salary and consultants.

Frazzled50yrold · 25/02/2022 23:39

We have remembrance Day and it can interpreted by people in different ways as they wish. We've lived in such strange times recently.

AnneLovesGilbert · 25/02/2022 23:50

Like him or not he did what he could when he was not required to

I’ve never heard of a single person saying they didn’t like him. He seemed like a perfectly nice chap.

He was not the only person over the last couple of shitty years who did do things that weren’t required to for the good of other people - their family, friends, neighbours, communities, country. Literally everyone did.

What we need is a day of remembrance for the vast number of people who died because of the pandemic, from covid, lack of timely diagnosis, suicide, poverty, loneliness. Something that gives us time to recognise the horrific cost of it all and a moment to dwell on it calmly, for those who want to.

Suzyinthesummertime · 25/02/2022 23:52

No fucking thanks

ThatsNotMyGolem · 26/02/2022 00:13

Absolute grifters.

Same goes for Azaylia Cain's father and the "foundation". Seems they've been spending the GoFundMe money on themselves.
