But this is why I don't give to go fund me or other Personal charities Too Prone to abuse.

MarieKlepto · 26/02/2022 01:11

Ugh, that family are so awful. If I recall it was the son-in-law who, in a jolly way, said something like "I'll give a pound to the NHS for every lap of the garden you do", filmed it, they battered the social media hell out of it and thus the Captain Tom phenomena was created. I don't think Tom realised the plan, he seemed a nice man. Then came the "Foundation". Charities have Fundraising Managers. They are often on v good salaries. What they don't do, if they have integrity, is appoint consultants, on consultancy rates unless necessary so why did family appoint a family member as consultant when they could have just been on employee rates/work for free/employ a pro bona consultant. All quite mirky.

SmellyOldOwls · 26/02/2022 01:31

I remember reading comments about the daughter on here at the time. Not much gets past MN!

RichardsGear · 26/02/2022 01:34

Captain Tom Day, my arse.

hellithurt · 26/02/2022 06:47

Not for me thanks!

Yeah and those people got a hiding and their posts deleted. The oxytocin has worn off now thank god.
Hshuznw · 26/02/2022 07:48

@Frazzled50yrold

We have remembrance Day and it can interpreted by people in different ways as they wish. We've lived in such strange times recently.
Oh! I finally got it! I couldn’t figure out who Captain Tom Day was!
MistyFuckingQuigley · 26/02/2022 07:55

@RichardMarxisinnocent

I opened this thread thinking it was about a Captain called Tom Day and was wondering who he is and what he's done to merit and thread on MN. I'll go and Google to educate myself about what's happened with the Captain Tom Moore charity.
Me too! I have zero interest in Tom Moore 😆
Userg1234 · 26/02/2022 08:09

Im v very suspicious of all 'tribute' charities. There's one local to me where the family are very 'it's for charity ' when try to get things for free or increase their share of any income.

But when you go on the charity commission site and look at the accounts, they spend a lot on fund raising and after 2 years of accounts, don't seem to have paid out anything in way of charity.

Georgeskitchen · 26/02/2022 08:29

None of this was down to Captain Tom. He just decided to do 100 laps for his 100th birthday because he couldn't do anything else. It went viral and captured the heart of the nation. He's gone now and its his daughter that is under investigation.
Pretty much standard comme nts from mumsnet only this time attacking an elderly gentleman who is no longer here to defend himself.
You must be very proud of yourselves

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 26/02/2022 08:45

But what on earth does that mean, he 'captured the heart of a nation'?!?!
He was just an elderly chap raising money who got turned into some sort of Best of British aspirational brand.
No one's attacking the man himself. Keep your hair on.

What does this sentimental claptrap mean? He didn't "capture my heart". I thought the whole thing was ridiculous.
TheVolturi · 26/02/2022 09:01

He captured something because enough people donated!
I didn't buy any of it, I thought it was bonkers at the time.

collieresponder88 · 26/02/2022 09:02

Money grabbing bastards they should be ashamed

BestKnitterInScotland · 26/02/2022 09:04

The BBC leapt onto the Captain Tom thing as an antidote to the covid doom and gloom which was all over the news at the time - April/May 2020 when everything was closed and we were being told to stay at home or PEOPLE WOULD DIE.

Yes looking back it was ill-judged and not all it seemed but at the time many people saw it as a feel-good story about an older man who had seen a lot of life. But they pushed it far too far - bloody Michael Ball. Hmm

Duracellbunnywannabe · 26/02/2022 09:09

Esther Rantzen - I’m not surprised. She also campaign for Grandparents rights without any basic understanding that it’s only children who have rights in regard to contact.

BBC do this ALL the time though. The breakfast "news" is a magazine programme with some news. So many sob stories. I have to keep muting it. It's the same with MND. I've no doubt it's a great cause but it gets a disproportionate amount of attention on BBC breakfast.
RedToothBrush · 26/02/2022 09:16

The whole thing was a pile of contrived PR bullshit, which went viral and got out of had. War hero tick. Garden tick. Nhs tick. The only thing he didn't have was a bulldog and a signed photo of himself stood next to Churchill.

People needed something to focus on. And there was literally nothing else happening at the time.

The government then jumped on the bandwagon realising it was good for them too.

The only pandemic PR stunt that was worse was the godawfulness of the Thursday Clap.

Liamgallaghersparka · 26/02/2022 09:21

I never bought into this bollocks.

LottaHogs · 26/02/2022 09:30

Maybe we could combine it with a whole day clapping for the NHS? Grin

Wonnle · 26/02/2022 09:33

Do we need a day for everything now then ?

The whole thing leaves a bad taste in my mouth to be honest now

VladmirsPoutine · 26/02/2022 09:34

I remember some people seeing this as the grift that it was ages ago and were basically castigated for it. I'm glad that they've been vindicated but my goodness. They have utterly zero shame!

ClingClingDin · 26/02/2022 09:34

Lol, no thanks

bellac11 · 26/02/2022 09:35

I have to be honest, I dont celebrate or donate to any of these types of things at the time and therefore dont need to feel uncomfortable about how they inevitably turn out to have some unpleasantness about them. My OH is constantly going on about the daughter and how terrible they all are, I dont know the full details.

bellac11 · 26/02/2022 09:39

He didnt capture my heart, it was irrelevant to me and things that were happening at the time.

I wouldnt go as far as to say I was 'anti' the thing but anything 'charity' that raises money for the NHS gets my back up due to the fact that the NHS should be properly funded by the tax payer and it isnt.

It was sentimental dynamite, all the elements of 'blitz spirit' and saving our NHS,, no wonder we're in a mess as a country.
