Andy Burnham

AIBU after watching and listening to Andy Burnham on Question Time to plead with him to be the next Labour Party Leader?

He was engaging, passionate, fair and stood up for the ordinary working families of this nation.

Keir Starmer is a nice enough man but when Andy Burnham speaks he is so passionate about his politics which seems lacking in Keir Starmer.

Really? I think that he’s a sanctimonious, whining arse. And he’s my mayor. Kier Starmer is in a different league.

HollowTalk · 17/02/2022 23:55

I completely agree with you. In fact he's probably the only one who I wouldn't say who's just the best of a bad lot. He's actually really good on his own. He is passionate, articulate and clever and can appeal to all sections of society.

Same here!

But I think he’d be popular. And be a good match for Boris.

He didn’t turn up for an event he was booked for I was attending last summer. Went right down in my estimation

Thedogscollar · 18/02/2022 00:13

@TheHoptimist. Well that's not great I agree but hopefully was a one off and had had a valid reason for his no show.

Re being sanctimonious as pp has said I would have thought coming across as morally superior wouldn't be too difficult against BJ.

I've met him a few times and he is very genuine. How that fuck with have Johnson and the Tories when there are such better offers on the table.

Thedogscollar · 18/02/2022 00:22

@FrecklesMalone
It's tragic what we have ended up with as leading this country.
I use the term leading very loosely. He couldn't lead a dog.

I thought he’d be a great Labour Party leader but he didn’t throw his hat in the ring a few years ago so I assumed he didn’t want it?
I do like Keir Starmer but think Andy Burnham might appeal to more voters.

Blossomtoes · 18/02/2022 00:25

I worked at DoH when he was Health Secretary. All the people who worked closely with him liked him immensely.

GoldenLightNights · 18/02/2022 00:26

I actually sad to DH tonight he’d make a great PM, he really does seem passionate and to care about others.

He was in the leadership contest and lost out to Jeremy Corbyn didn't he? After that he stepped down from being an MP and then became Mayor of Manchester. I suppose he would be able to move back to being an MP and have another try at the leadership but I wouldn't see that happening before the next election is due. Also, he may prefer what he is doing now away from the Westminster government.
StScholastica · 18/02/2022 00:30

Hmm his CAZ tax wasn't particularly well thought through. I get that the govt "imposed" the need for it on to him but come on, extending it to the whole of Gtr Mancs will cripple so much of their economy.

Exactly. He is immensely likeable and you feel he understands has walked in your shoes. All the things we want from a politician. I'm nearly 60 and I remember politicians from the past who came across as caring about the ordinary person and passionate to get them a better deal. I will vote Labour at next election hell will freeze over before I'd ever vote Tory I just wish Keir Starmer had a bit more gusto about him.

At least he’s a grown up.

FirstAconite · 18/02/2022 00:35

I can't bear him. Not after he tried to rewrite history with regards to Hillsborough. He always pops up whenever there's a bit of good news about justice for the families but the reality is he did nothing at all until her was shamed into doing it by a chanting crowd at Anfield.

I've a feeling he will be prime minister one day, but I really don't like his opportunist, self publicising ways. Not that he is alone in those traits within politics.

Wardrobes123 · 18/02/2022 00:37

God no. He knows how to appeal to voters, he’s been a politician for years but i haven’t been impressed with his work as Manchester Mayor

sandgrown · 18/02/2022 00:40

All Keir Starmer appears to do is try to knock Boris down . No evidence of any great policies going forward. I think Andy Burnham would be a great leader and he should have won last time he put himself forward.

notangelinajolie · 18/02/2022 00:41

He won't get the votes from the Labour party. So no, he won't ever be PM.

He didn't he? Wasn't it Jeremy Corbyn, Yvette Cooper and Andy Burnham standing against each other for leader? After that Andy Burnham became mayor of Manchester.
Thedogscollar · 18/02/2022 00:43

*At least he's a grown up

Yes he is and I will vote for his party and for him to be PM.

Anything has to be better than the self serving bunch in power right now.

OP posts:
Thedogscollar · 18/02/2022 00:46

@notangelinajolie
Why would he not get the votes required from the Labour party?

I would have thought he would appeal to the masses so more chance of them regaining power.

He's a mayor in an area that didn't want a mayor and also a police crime commissioner. And gives a percentage of his wages to his own charity as he doesn't need the money.
I think he'd be a better human if he refused the wages instead.
Apart from clean air zone nonsense that's now on hold because it's a stupid idea that wouldn't get a single person out of a car as it's aimed at vans, there's also the delay on child sexual abuse report.
And the complete lack of police crime reporting for what feels like years across greater Manchester. He's got a pr Twitter person for a job I don't think adds any value and detracts from the policing budget.
A complete waste of money and oxygen.
